Flexing

Artist Tom Reilly presented his (unofficial) redesign of Booster Gold's costume on Twitter.com, and I'd say it's pretty Boosterrific.

© DC Comics

Like: the gold star wrapping around his chest evoking football shoulder pads (bonus points for emulating the way Blue Beetle's costume utilizes a bug outline).

Dislike: the pointless triangle belt stolen from Aquaman and the weird ankle weights.

Love: the collar. All Booster Gold costumes should have a collar.

I sure wish we could have gotten something more like this in the New 52 relaunch.

New Release: Nightwing 100

I've had my eye on this week's New Champion of Shazam #4 for months, but that doesn't have anything to do with Booster Gold. I just love me some Doc Shaner art (and Hoppy, The Marvel Bunny!).

I've also had my eye on this week's Nightwing #100. I also love me some Bruno Redondo art... and I especially love Bruno Redondo art with Booster Gold in it!

© DC Comics

In a delightful twist, that's the issue's "Cover A," which means it is probably the most common* and easiest to acquire cover for this landmark issue. Which is a good thing, as there are at least 11 other covers of varying rarity. Whew!

*These days, DC allows retailers to order their choice of most non-incentive covers, which means there is no longer such a thing as a "standard" cover. Everything is a variant. And just because a cover has been designated as Cover A, that doesn't necessarily mean that retailers order more of those than, say, Cover B (or C or D...). So estimating the rarity (and related value) of any given cover is harder than ever. But since the laws of supply and demand still hold, the most valuable cover will usually be the most desired one, and who wouldn't want the cover with Booster Gold on it?

Buy this comic for its cover and make Skeets happy!

My Favorite Pages: Justice League 4

My Favorite Pages

This series is intended to address all of Booster Gold's comics in the order of their publication, yet so far, I've only covered issues of Booster Gold Volume 1. I've skipped spotlighting issues of New Teen Titans, The Outsiders, and the earliest issues of Justice League because Booster doesn't appear on a full page's worth of panels.

Now, at last, we come to Booster's first significant appearance outside of his own title. It also happens to be my single favorite Booster Gold comic story of all time and the number one entry in my list of the Twelve Best Booster Gold Stories Ever. If you read the title to this post, you already know I'm talking about Justice League #4.

I can (and have) looked at this book all day. But if I could look at only one page of panels from Justice League #4, it would be the only page one with a smiling Batman.

I like how Batman's smile dawns after the line break, but I especially love that Booster's head turn in the final panel builds tension while leading to the single panel on the second page of this two-page spread, where artist Kevin Maguire gives us this:

Yeah, Justice League #4 is a Boosterrific comic, even if I do say so myself.

Blame It on Dark Crisis

As fans of Booster Gold know, the DC Universe is an inherently unstable place where status quo (and reality itself) can change at less than a moment's notice. No one is more aware of this than Booster Gold's best friend, Ted Kord.

Ted Kord has been the Blue Beetle since 1966. He's been a member of the Justice League since 1987. He's been dead since 2005 and alive again since 2014. And he's had a sister since... December.

And she's no fan of her brother's friendship with Booster Gold.

Booster boosters will remember that Ted was ousted as CEO of Kord Industries by its board of directors in last year's Blue and Gold #2, so it shouldn't be surprising that the board turned to his sister, even if we're just now meeting her for the first time.

If I have any gripes, it's that Ted has traditionally kept his participation as Blue Beetle a secret from the general public and other Kord Industries employees, but it makes sense he'd share his secret with his sister. I mean, Booster eventually told his secrets to his own sister, Michelle.

Wait. Is Victoria Ted's twin? That would be weird, right?

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Starfire have already appeared in issues of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day. Will we see Booster in future issues? Only Victoria Kord knows for sure.

New Release: Human Target 10

Once again, I don't know if we'll be seeing Booster Gold in any of this week's books, but I can say for certain that he's on one.

To be specific, he's on the 1:25 retailer incentive (Cover C) of Human Target #10 by Jeff Spokse

© DC Comics

I'm not going to pay extra for it — I already spend too much money on comic books (and eveything else!) to chase these increasingly common incentive variants, DC — but I do like it.

Meanwhile, I have other things going on this week that require extra attention, so if anyone does spot Booster Gold (in, say, Lazarus Planet Alpha or anywhere else), I'd appreciate it if you'd report it in the comments, please.

You're the best, Booster boosters!
