Booster Gold: The Movie
(The History)

"You know this thing'll be bigger than 'Gremlins', 'Goonies' and 'Gone with the Wind'!"
—Booster Gold, Booster Gold #1, 1986

Literally the first words out of Booster Gold's mouth in his very first appearance were a negotiation to get "Booster Gold The Motion Picture" made. Decades later, the live-action movie of Booster Gold's life story (or at least, his version of it) still hasn't materialized.

The following is a history of real-world attempts to get a live-action Booster Gold to the big—or any—screen. Click on any project header to expand.

2023-present Booster Gold (HBO Max)

Script under development by James Gun for DC Studios / Warner Bros for HBO Max.

July 24, 2025
"Our Flag Means Death creator/showrunner David Jenkins is writing a pilot for a live-action Booster Gold series, as first reported by Deadline [July 23, 2025]. This is one of a handful of projects announced in 2023 when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over Warner Bros.'s cinematic DC plans, however Jenkins' work on this project is recent - as he is replacing Righteous Gemstones' Danny McBride, who was recently released from the project...."

"'We’re not quite there yet in terms of Booster Gold. We’re just not quite there. The scripts aren’t quite where I want them to be,' Gunn explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. 'From the beginning, I’ve made it clear that the one thing that we’re gonna do at DC is, no matter what, we’re going to wait until the screenplays and the teleplays are ready before we shoot them. And I’m not going to shoot anything until I’m happy with it.' ... When Gunn and Safran announced the 10-project DCU slate in January 2023, Safran said that DC Studios will never 'put a project into production before the script is right.' 'We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished,' Gunn shared on Threads in March."

"Touted as a superhero story of imposter syndrome by James Gunn, the secret Max series is taking shape behind the scenes. It’s been previously reported that an actor [Kumail Nanjani] is already cast to play Booster Gold (first reported by r/DCULEAKS) and that they’re close to getting a showrunner (reported by DanielRPK). In addition, there was a listing on Production List stating the series will begin filming on July 8, 2024, which was quickly debunked by James Gunn commenting on a fan’s question about the rumor. We’ve now heard from our source the following names are attached to write the Booster Gold series. DC Studios is tapping into Danny McBride, John Carcieri and Jeff Fradley the creative team behind the HBO Max Original series The Righteous Gemstones."

"A few days ago, Gunn was asked if he had 'any words' ('Or even just an emoji') he could share regarding the [Booster Gold] project – with Gunn offering in response, 'Don't believe the internet.' While we're not sure what Gunn could actually be referring to, there were some rumblings over the past few days that a director had been found and that Gunn would be penning some of the episodes. That could be what Gunn was referring to, without wanting to give the article any free promotion."

"Three months after James Gunn and Peter Safran officially started running the newly created DC Studios within Warner Bros. Discovery, the co-chiefs have announced the first 10 film and TV titles within the rebooted DC Universe. ... The projects run the gamut. There are titles based on marquee DC heroes — including the previously announced Superman feature written by Gunn, now officially titled “Superman: Legacy,” a Batman and Robin movie, a Wonder Woman prequel series and a Green Lantern mystery series — as well as titles featuring lesser known characters, including Booster Gold and Swamp Thing."

2015-2019 Booster Gold (Warner Bros.)

Script developed by Berlanti Productions for Warner Bros. Never Produced.

November 15, 2019
"But now, we’ve learned from our sources – the same ones who told us about that aforementioned Green Lantern show before it was officially announced – that some upcoming DCEU movies may skip theaters and premiere on HBO Max. The big name we’re hearing is that Booster Gold could be the first feature film release for the service. We were told earlier this year that the script was complete and was waiting to be greenlit by the studio. And given that Booster Gold isn’t a particularly well-known hero, it may make sense to introduce him to audiences as part of a streaming package."

Their strategy seems to change depending on how [...] most recent movie did. But I can tell you that a script has been turned in that the director and producer, Greg Berlanti, has proclaimed himself to be very happy with. And it’s something that’s ready to go, but DC and Warner Bros. would need to give the greenlight to it. The ball is in their court.'"
