It's Hip to Be Square

When Booster Gold was created in 1985, Nintendo was in the process of revolutionizing home video gaming. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) had 2 KB of video RAM and a 54 color palette.

At the time that was amazing. In 2012, it's nostalgic.

Kids, Buy Booster Flakes!

While enjoying the holiday, Morgenstern noted that while Booster Gold didn't make the roster of Fisher Price's DC Super Friends line of toys, he did make it into their cartoon. At least their cartoon billboards.

This 2010 cartoon, "The Joker's Plahouse," re-imagining the classic 1970s Super Friends was released with the Fisher-Price® Imaginext™ DC SUPER FRIENDS™ toy line. Despite being a toy giveaway, the quality is surprisingly high.

Fortunately for those of us who aren't buying toys for 3-year-olds, Fisher Price has uploaded the cartoon to their YouTube account. You can watch the whole cartoon here. To see Booster, you can jump to 4:15 of the above linked video. However, but those of you who are a bit more nostalgic -- or big fans of Ted Knight impersonators -- may want to watch it all from the beginning. It's mmmm... good.

Begin the Year with Booster's Best

While Booster Gold's victory over Maxwell Lord may have been short lived, it certainly seems to have struck a chord with our voters. Let's hope that Booster will get to have a showdown with his old frenemy one day in the DCnU.

Last week's poll question: What was the highlight of 2011 for Booster Gold? (38 votes)

What was the highlight of 2011 for Booster Gold?

Beginning next week, polls will be moving to Thursdays from their customary Fridays. Adjust your calendars appropriately. Since that means that this week's poll will run for 6 instead of the customary 7 days, let's keep it simple: this is the Best Booster Book Championship!

New Old Releases: Chase

Today DC is releasing a comprehensive collection of Chase. This 329-page softcover includes the character's first appearance in Batman #550, the far-too-brief 10-issue series itself, and short stories from 8 different Secret Files comics originally published between the late 1990s and early 2000s.

If you have never read the series, you owe it to yourself to partake of writer Curtis Johnson's paranoid trip behind-the-scenes of the DC Universe and artist J.H. Williams III's delicately intricate panel designs.

And if that's not reason enough, be aware that Booster Gold appears or is referenced in at least four -- Chase #4, Chase #6, Chase #1,000,000, and DC Universe Secret Files 2000 (referenced during dialogue between Chase and Blue Beetle) -- of the issues appearing in this collection. This collection contains almost all of Booster's brief fling with Firehawk!

If there is any weakness to this collection, it's that there is no Skeets. Poor li'l guy. The 90s were not a good time to be a football-shaped sidekick.

UPDATE 12/29/2011: I've just been notified that Booster Gold appears (twice thrice!) in Teen Titans #4. Booster is seen in partial advertisements for toothpaste and the Daily Planet in Times Square. It may be a new DCU, but Booster's the same Shining Salesman.
