Solicitations in Mourning

DC's July solicitations came out late last week, and as Rob Snow wrote to me, tongue firmly in cheek, "still no Absolute Booster." Phew.

But there's not much run-of-the-mill Booster Gold, either, except for his inclusion in a couple of collections, including the inevitable Absolute Power Omnibus and another collection featuring selected stories by Keith Giffen, appropriately titled The DC Universe by Keith Giffen.

The Giffen volume will reprint just a small sample of contributions the prolific writer/artist made through the decades, and it is unclear at this time how much Booster Gold will be in it. If the solicitation is accurate, the answer is a little but not much, which also describes how much of our hero will be on the cover reusing Kevin Maguire's art from the "Remembering Keith Giffen" ad that ran in DC Comics in November 2023:

Keep an eye out for that in September.

Maybe It's Me

I think that this should have been a good week for Booster Gold. He survived Absolute Power and earned the respect of Superman to be personally drafted into the Justice League Unlimited and be trusted enough by Batman and Wonder Woman to go spy on Darkseid. That should all be pretty cool, right?

Except I find I'm not enthusiastic.

I've not been shy about my general disinterest in Absolute Power as just the latest DC event that never felt very eventful to me. Only in the most tangential way did it lead to the DC All In Special, which, despite months of build-up, I thought read like a Free Comic Book Day giveaway teaser of empty hype for the next publishing initiative that I'm not excited about.

However, I must admit that maybe the problem isn't the quality or direction of the stories. Maybe it's me. I've been having a hard time finding the fun in much of anything recently, and that depression-tinted malaise may very well be coloring my perception of DC's comic books.

So tell me, what did you think? Is DC All In Special good? Are you excited for whatever is coming next for our hero? Should I start taking anti-depressants? Leave a comment and let me know.

New Old Releases: Kingdom Come Again

There's no sign that Booster Gold will be in any of the new comics coming to your Local Comic Shop this week, but he will be in one of the older ones, specifically the reprint collection Batman/Superman: World's Finest Volume 4: Return to Kingdom Come.

If you are enjoying Absolute Power, I can safely say you'll like Batman/Superman: World's Finest. It's the same creative team, and they're old hands at handling "big" stories. (Which is why some of us feel Absolute Power should have been four issues of that title instead of a badly-bloated standalone event that exists only to launch a new series of alternate reality comics. But some of us are just grumpy old malcontents.)

Now, I don't want to lead you on. The Booster Gold in Batman/Superman: World's Finest Volume 4: Return to Kingdom Come is not our familiar Booster Gold, but the Booster Gold from Earth-22, and he's not exactly integral to the story. In fact, he appears on exactly 4 panels. Still, some Booster Gold is better than no Booster Gold, right?

All In One Word

Ok, so Booster Gold can't be seen anywhere in Absolute Power #2. But that's not the only place you won't find our hero!

As reported by BleedingCool.com and other sources, earlier this week X.com user romaa_0905 asked director James Gunn whether Booster Gold will appear in his upcoming Superman movie. Gunn's answer?

"No."

Great! Now I don't have to watch Superman. Thanks, James!

However, Booster booster Rob Snow reports that elsewhere on X, via DCOfficial to be precise, it appears we are getting confirmation that Booster Gold will definitely be in next month's DC All-In Special #1.

Technically, the post I've linked to above is promoting the "Justice League membership cards" DC (via Lunar Distribution) is distributing to comic shops to promote Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and... Darkseid(???) in October. For more information about that story and when you can get your own copy of those cards, visit thepopverse.com.

But don't be distracted by the shiny card. The important takeaway here is that Booster Gold will definitely be seen in the DC All-In Special when it comes to your Local Comic Shop on October 2. Thanks, Rob!
