New Eyesores For Your Toy Shelf

New York Comic Con 2012 was this past weekend, and there was plenty to see. Too bad most of it was so ugly.

TheBlotSays.com has details on DC Collectible's upcoming Booster Gold mini-bust planned for a February 2012 release. The sculpting looks fantastic; too bad that when we finally get a Booster mini-bust from DC, I can't buy it. Giving $69.95 to DC Collectibles for that 6" bust would imply that I approved of -- or at least tolerated -- that DCnU atrocity of a costume. I don't, and I won't. (By the way, what's with that star? Is it Booster's newest logo? Ugh-ly.)

Even on a 1/48 scale model, that costume looks terrible. Obviously, DCnU Booster Gold will be in an upcoming set of Heroclix as well. Fortunately, he won't be alone. Also on display at NYCC 2012 was an appropriately Heroclix-scaled version of the late, lamented Blue Beetle's Bug airship. (Now that's something that I can endorse dropping some heavy cash on!) Fly on over to Russ Burlingame's article at ComicBook.com for more info and pics.

UPDATE 10/15/2012: Heroclix.com has a page up detailing the dial, powers, and abilities of the Booster Gold figure to be released in the Batman set next month. The Heroclix website calls this week "Blue & Gold Week," so pay attention this week for more official news about that Blue Beetle Bug seen at NYCC.

UPDATE 10/16/2012: Action Figure Insider has complete details about the bust, including the name of the sculptor, James Shoop.

This Day in History: Meet Bloodbath

Extreme Justice #6

Last week, we reviewed Booster Gold's sole appearance as the villain Bloodbath in a bit of pseudo-history. This week, let's take a look at some real history, Booster Gold's appearance in the first issue of Bloodbath.

If you're unaware, the summer 1993 DC annuals featured the Bloodlines storyline of an other-dimensional alien race who came to Earth to harvest humans spinal fluid. (Don't bother asking why a race of aliens would develop the need for human spinal fluid for their reproduction process. Comic books don't have time for your silly science.)

DC used the event to create new characters from the survivors of these alien attacks. These new super heroes -- all very '90s, if you know what I mean -- were called the "New Blood" and received the majority of the focus in these stories. That left precious little room for established characters like Booster Gold.

At the time, Booster was still adjusting to his new, post-Doomsday armor, and was arguably more hindrance than help to the Justice League. As a result, Booster confronts and is defeated by three separate aliens in this issue alone. Even if the story doesn't give our hero much of a break, it's still great to see Booster's commitment to heroics.

Yes, the premise is a bit ridiculous and smacks of market-driven storytelling, and yes, Booster Gold comes off looking washed-up. However, there will always be something satisfying about DC heroes banding together to save Earth from yet another alien invasion. If nothing else, the series deserves credit for inspiring the DC Bloodlines website, and that's got to count for something.

(P.S. The Boosterrific Forum is back online. Hopefully we'll get some good Booster Gold news to talk about from New York ComicCon this weekend!)

I'll Ask Again

I should know by now that whenever I list Ted Kord as an option in a poll, he's the clear winner. I wonder when DC will figure that out.

Last week's poll question: If Booster Gold were to run for President, who should be his Vice-Presidential running mate? (59 votes)

If Booster Gold were to run for President, who should be his Vice-Presidential running mate?

Back in March 2011, I asked whether you would vote for Booster Gold if he ran for public office. Consider this week's poll as a re-investigation of that question.

Get an Eyeful of Arrow Tonight

Since you're reading this post on a website devoted to the greatest hero in the history of whichever DC Universe you prefer, you are interested in the Booster Gold series in development by the SyFy network. There has been precious little information about that show so far, but that's because the producers have been busy with a show based on a different colorful DC hero: Green Arrow.

Arrow debuts tonight on The CW, and it may provide the best clues to what producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have in mind for Booster Gold. If the title is any indication, we know that SyFy's show will probably be called just Booster. For any more hints, we'll have to watch The CW tonight at 8:00 PM EST.

Wanted Poster Reward

Here at Boosterrific, we are developing quite a relationship with the Kevin Maguire/Terry Austin "Class of 87" Justice League International poster.

Justice League International Poster © DC Comics

You may recall that back in August I solicited help getting a close-up of Batman's shoulder. I am finally at liberty to tell you why: the original art was in need of some repair, and the new owner, Malvin, needed a photo reference. Now the work is back from the restorer, and it looks great.

In addition to this piece, Malvin has a very impressive catalog of art online at ComicArtFans.com that you may enjoy (including a much larger resolution image of these inks). We both offer thanks to everyone who helped, especially Shawn Baston.
