In addition to being a good source for publisher news and great deals on comics and art, comic book conventions are a great place for fans to get together with other fans and creators and celebrate their heroes. Sometimes, fans go so far as to dress as those heroes. This can lead to awkward situations.

The above autobiographical strip by artist and last week's Boston Comic Convention attendee Erica Henderson illustrates a significant reason why many of us can't, won't, or shouldn't dress like our favorite super heroes in our daily lives. There is a lot of truth in this cartoon.

One of these things is not like the other. The Booster Gold cosplayer on the left won the award for "Best Comic Book Hero Costume Honorable Mention" at BCC 2012. It's a great costume, even if it does suffer from a case of the unmentionables. If nothing else, it reminds us why Booster Gold must look different on television than he does in the comics. That is, unless they can find an actor who is really willing to sacrifice a part of himself for the role.

Thanks to the Boosterrific Forum's latest member, MetalWoman, for giving us a head's up about the 5-page preview (1/4 of the total issue!) for Justice League International #9 posted last week at io9.com. Two things to take away from this preview:

1. Skeets is still very much Booster's sidekick in the DCnU, even if we can't quite get him on panel yet.
2. Batwing is a jerk.

Today's entry of "Booster Gold International" is brought to you by Switzerland's own Eyz, better known as the artist behind heroes-comix.blogspot.com and G33k Life:

Switzerland isn't quite well known for its superheroes. Besides "real" figures like William Tell and a couple of other national legends. Would a Swiss Booster Gold be that different from its American counterpart?

First to put things into perspective, a bit of cultural background. The "Helvetic Confederation" is divided into three distinct regional parts. There's a bigger German-speaking region which is closer to Germany in terms of mentality and culture, a French-speaking region with a rich mix of people and ethnicities and finally a smaller Italian-speaking region full of old Swiss traditions. Well, I'm from the Romandy personally, aka the French Swiss part so I'll talk from that point of view.

Switzerland doesn't have a lot of superheroes around, but we have our share of classic comic book figures thanks to a comic culture shared with France and Belgium. But could we have a superhero like Booster around nevertheless?

Actually, I'd say yes! To be precise, Booster Gold could be one of those rare American superheroes that would just as easily be "translated" over here.

In terms of attitude, people and government, Switzerland is in fact closer to the United States than most of its European neighbors. To stereotype, yes we're totally corporate capitalist and strongly competitive here as well. I'm using these clichés to point out a Swiss Booster Gold from his early Dan Jurgens run would be totally relatable to people! The same could be said for the modern secret protector of history Time Master-Booster. Who wouldn't dream to be this unknown force of good, even without getting any appraise to help out others? (I'm appealing to what people here aspire, I mean Red Cross, United Nations? we got those in Geneva for a reason!)

Regarding Booster Gold's shiny looks, logo, design, etc.? He wouldn't need to wear traditional Red and White colors on his costume, or have changes to look like a stereotypical Helvetian from an old parody. I mean, he isn't actually wearing an USA flag to begin with, right?

To summarize: Booster Gold could work as an actual Swiss superhero! (why don't we have any of those already?) Could we at least start by having actual reprints of his series translated here? Booster would be a hit so easily with old and young readers alike!

Would Booster Gold fans read Booster Gold comics even if those comics were only online? The answer appears to be yes.

Word on the street is that next month Firehawk will be joining the cast of Justice League International. This situation could set up an intriguing love triangle as Booster Gold reignites his old flame with Firehawk despite the jealousy of a hot-headed Godiva. But DC's solicitations for today's The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #8 throw some cold water on that smoldering scenario:

Introducing the all-new Firehawk, France's own atomic defender, and Hurricane, Great Britain's officially sanctioned Nuclear Man! Meanwhile, out of the ashes of last issue's shocking climax, Ronnie Raymond and the Russian Firestorm, Pozhar, begin a long, mutual descent toward the dark underbelly of the Firestorm Protocols.

Oh, never mind. Good-bye American Lorraine Reilly, hello unknown French girl. Thanks, Flashpoint. I hated character development anyway.

Doesn't this seem a bit sudden? Every other member of the DCnU Justice League International had appeared in at least 2 other comics somewhere before joining the team's roster. Are the Firestorms of the DCnU such jerks that their supporting cast hates to stick around? Or could it be that Firestorm has no need for a woman in his own book after (*ahem*) "last issue's shocking climax" with Pozhar? Maybe Firehawk would just be in the way as Firestorm and Pozhar (*cough*) "begin a long, mutual descent toward the dark underbelly of the Firestorm Protocols"? (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

The best way to find the answers to these and many other burning questions is to pick up The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #8.
