Old Release: Harley Quinn 66

It seems that in my glee over Bootser's cover appearances on Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium #2, I missed a second Booster Gold appearance last week. Fortunately for us all, Booster booster J directed me to Harley Quinn #66 which included panels of Booster Gold and Harley hooking up in the Coney Island Wonder Wheel Ferris wheel.

Wow. Heroes in Crisis sure made some strange bedfellows. (Amusingly, earlier in the issue, Harley's mother tells her that she has "terrible taste in men.")

Given that the panel appears in a comic book within a comic book (and therefore isn't the "real" Booster or Harley), does this count as an example of in-universe 'shipping? Is such a thing possible? Maybe it's better if I don't find out.

Thanks to J for the spot.

If that's not enough Booster Gold for you this New Comic Book Day, consider taking a listen to Mike Avila's interview with Dan Jurgens for SyFy Wire's Behind the Panel podcast. As you might expect from the episode title, "Dan Jurgens on Booster Gold and the Death of Superman," about half of the 22-minute interview covers the creation of Booster Gold. Enjoy listening.

Summer Movie Season

Revenge Of The Fans plans to release a new Fanboy podcast today, and their guest will be screenwriter Zack Stentz. They asked Stentz about the state of his Booster Gold movie script:

I do not know what's going on with it right now, honestly. And I don't know if the DC people know what's going on with it. Their strategy seems to change depending on how [...] most recent movie did. But I can tell you that a script has been turned in that the director and producer, Greg Berlanti, has proclaimed himself to be very happy with. And it's something that's ready to go, but DC and Warner Bros. would need to give the greenlight to it. The ball is in their court.

We've been following the progress of Stentz's script since he took the job back in 2016. I'm glad to hear that his boss, Arrow and Flash producer Greg Berlanti, is happy with it. Maybe one day Warner Bros will be, too.

More of Less

Late last week, Newsarama.com released DC's solicitations for comics shipping in July. Sadly, there isn't any evidence that we'll be seeing much if any Booster Gold this summer.

Maybe that's for the best. I have no interest in DC's Marvel Zombies DCeased summer event series. If our hero shows up there, I'm trusting that some reliable Booster booster will let me know.

Meanwhile, I remind everyone that the Fire and Water Podcast Network continues its JLI Podcast series. This weekend, they covered Justice League International #25, which could just as easily be called "Blue and Gold meet Dracula." We looked at the color guide to that issue just a few months ago.

You'll find links to listen to the JLI Podcast (and others) at FireAndWaterPodcast.com.

New Beard for Batman

Earlier this week via Twitter, Tony Daniel revealed that the cover for Batman 46 has been changed from the cover solicited. I have to say, I like the new cover much better. Just look at the crazy thing happening here:

© DC Comics

No, I'm not talking about gun-toting Batman or Batman Returns Catwoman. I only have eyes for Booster Gold's beard!

Facial hair is a rarity for Booster. It's certainly not something that Shag and Rob mentioned when they covered the character's vitals in their recent Fire and Water Network "Who's Who DC Universe Podcast." They're pretty thorough, though, so I'm sure they'll correct that oversight when they get around to doing the "Update '18" podcast.

To find out why Booster has grown a beard, I guess we'll all have to buy Batman #46 when it hits our Local Comic Shops on May 2.

Give Broderick Some Love

Have you been listening to the Silver and Gold podcast? The latest installment covers Booster Gold, volume 1, #18 from 1987.

To get it out of the way, guys, yes this issue is the last appearance of Broderick. And Booster Gold volume 1 should not be considered an "epic failure." Though it may not seem like much, twenty-five issues featuring a brand new character isn't so bad, even in the mid-80s.

© DC Comics

That Broderick is never mentioned again is, in fact, my only complaint about this issue. He was much too good a character to appear in the spotlight only once. As I covered in my "The True Story of Booster Gold" series in 2015, Dan Jurgens had intended for Broderick to return. However, like Trixie and Dirk Davis, Broderick became just another casualty when Booster Gold volume 1 was cancelled going into Millennium.

Despite Roy and FKAjason's podcast snark, Booster Gold #18 is a good comic. Not only do we see Michael "Booster Gold" Carter lay his life on the line to behave like a hero when the cameras are off, we get to see it through the eyes of a skeptic. We're also treated to more of Booster's backstory. Great character- and world-building all in one comic! What more could you want?
