This Day in History: Death Rattle

Many, many of you seem very excited about this Cable vs Booster Gold DEATH BATTLE!, so let's just go ahead and watch it, shall we? (The really good stuff starts at about 13:20, just after the Blue Apron ad.)

Hmmm. Let's see. Booster Gold's force field is strong enough to stop Superman, so yeah, it'd stop whatever Cable could throw at it. But mind control? I'm not sure that scans.

Booster Gold traditionally has a real problem with mind control. See: Justice League Annual #1, Justice League #6, Justice League International #17, Eclipso: The Darkness Within #2, Justice League America #59, Time Masters: Vanishing Point #4, Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen, to name a few examples to the contrary.

For the record, despite what the video says, it wasn't Booster's force field that saved his memories in Justice League: Generation Lost. Booster himself assumes in issue #2 that the four members of the JLI that were unaffected by Max Lord's re-writing of history were saved by the mechanics of Lord's broadcast (much in the same way that radio waves directed outward from radio antennas fail to send a signal to the base of the tower). Then Lord seems to say in issue #5 that he left them their memories on purpose. Either way, the force field deserves no credit.

But why let a few technicalities distract from a fun time, eh?

(I *really* should keep my mouth shut here. Death Battle has 4.5 million subscribers, which makes it very likely that more people will see Booster Gold for the first time in this YouTube video than any other singe occasion in the character's history. For comparison, the Smallville episode "Booster" — broadcast on this day in 2011 — was watched by a mere 2.3 million people. Death Battle for the win!)

Thanks to all who sent me the link.

No New Comics? No Problem

Since today is the first New Comics Day without comics in the history of New Comics Days, you're probably looking to get your Booster Gold fix somewhere else. How about Youtube?

First, Booster booster Eskana lets us know that our hero — as played by Ali G — appears briefly in the latest Honest Trailers take on "Justice League: The Snyder Cut".

Honest Trailers | Justice League: The Snyder Cut

Meanwhile, friend of the blog Michael Foster has spotted Booster Gold in a musical montage of Phil Cho's fan created "Earth-27 Heroes". (Start looking at the 50 second mark, right after Fire and Ice.)

And that's not all! According to CDN, the YouTube series Death Battle has promised in their latest video to next feature a Cable vs Booster Gold match-up. If you want to keep tabs on when that might drop, you can find their videos here.

Thanks for the notifications. And if anyone else spots Booster somewhere in the wild, please let me know.

Get On the Booster Bus

One of the good thing about having no comic books is that I have more time to watch cartoons. And, as Booster booster Ithildyn has recently brought to my attention, Booster Gold has been making cameo appearances in recent episodes of the online DC Super Hero Girls shorts.

He's on the side of the bus at the 34 second mark in #TheCommute.

And he's on the side of another bus (ok, maybe the same bus) at the 1.17 mark in #ShellShock!

"Give Yourself A Boost" with Booster Cereal? That's a product we've not seen before. Just how many cereals are you going to endorse, buddy? You're giving Cap'n Crunch a run for his money.

Both videos are available to watch via YouTube.com. (#TheCommute, #ShellShock).

New Old Release: YotV Hell Arisen 3 2nd Print

Did you miss out on Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 two weeks ago? You could buy a copy on eBay for $40, or, if you're lucky, you can find a rushed second printing today at your LCS for $3.99.

Sigh. (Seriously, I've been collecting comics for four decades, and I still marvel at how the speculator market works.)

While we're on the topic of speculating, I guess now's as good a time as any to mention that pop culture site wegotthiscovered.com reports... well, I'll let them say it.

Warner Brothers is looking to bring [Ryan] Reynolds back to DC but not as the Green Lantern. Instead, they want him to play Booster Gold.

Ok, sure. I'd buy a ticket to see Reynolds bring Zack Stentz's 2017 still-unproduced Booster Gold: The Movie script to life. But then, I'd buy a ticket to see Rob Schneider play Booster Gold. I'm not a hard sell in the Booster Gold department.

And now that I'm on the topics of actors, I should probably take the opportunity to mention what card -carrying Booster Brigade member Shawn Baston spotted in a youtube video tour of comedian Pete Davidson's apartment given to Netflix. Feast your eyes on this:

Pete Davidson Gives An Exclusive Tour Of His Basement Apartment | Netflix Is A Joke

No, not the picture of Davidson's grandfather with Judd Apatow. Over there in the corner.

Yep, that's a copy of 1985's first printing of Booster Gold volume 1 #1. You've got good taste, Pete. That issue sells for upwards of $30 on eBay!

Double sigh.

UPDATE 2020-03-18: wegotthiscovered.com now reports that Reynolds has turned down the role. That means I've mentioned them twice in this post, which shows you how much mileage there is in speculating about such things.

UPDATE 2020-03-19: wegotthiscovered.com updates their own reporting to say that since Ryan Reynolds passed, WB now wants Chris Pratt. So, they're determined to poach all the Marvel actors then. I guess next week they'll be after Tom Holland.

Paradise by the Karaoke Mic

Booster Gold gets his hands on a karaoke microphone in Harley Quinn #70 to sing

When I was lost, you took my hand
When life was gray, you made it grand
When I was damned, you knew the deal
When my heard was sand, you made it steel

I'll call you babe, and you call me boo
I'll love you strong, and you love me true!
Until the end of the world, I love you!

Don't be surprised if you don't recognize the song. It's not real. It was created by issue writer Sam Humphries specifically for the occasion ("to pass legal"). But he didn't create it without inspiration.

According Humphries himself (@samhumphries on Twitter.com), the song was inspired by "For Crying Out Loud," written by Jim Steinman and performed by Meat Loaf on his 1977 epic operatic album, Bat Out of Hell.

I've always thought of Booster as more of a U2 fan, but who am I to tell a Justice Leaguer what to sing.
