New Old Release: Death of Superman New Edition

For the third week in a row, DC is releasing a trade compilation reprinting old Booster Gold appearances. This week it is The Death of Superman, which contains Booster's dismantling by Doomsday as originally seen in Justice League America #69 and Superman, Volume 2, #74.

To give readers who have read this, the most read story in the history of comic books, a reason to read it again, DC is promoting this reprint as "a newly recolored edition." I don't know how much weight that adds to your decision whether to re-purchase this classic story by Dan Jurgens and company, but if you were looking for an excuse, there you go.

I should mention that also out today is Justice League of America #1. It was once strongly implied that this series was where we would eventually see Booster Gold return, so keep your eyes peeled if you drop by your Local Comic Shop this week if you want to get in on the ground floor. (Just don't expect to see Booster in issue #1.) This ridiculous thing has 53 covers that retailers were allowed to order individually, so it shouldn't be too hard to spot.

From Museum Guard to Museum Piece

Lest you think that the JLA Trophy Room only keeps multiple versions of costumes, think again. The JLA keeps everything they can get their hands on, including multiple copies of discarded sidekicks!

In JLA Secret Files #2, Zauriel tells us that the JLA Watchtower houses the shell of the original Skeets. Don't worry about Skeets gathering dust on the moon, however, as this is just an empty shell. At the time, Skeets' artificial intelligence was being retasked as the operating system in Booster Gold's Mark XI armor. This made Skeets' original golden body superfluous.

Skeets was returned to this familiar football-shaped shell when Booster upgraded to a powersuit that didn't need a sentient operating system. But the JLA Trophy Room doesn't surrender trophies easily! They won't lose one Skeets without gaining another.

As seen in Justice League of America, Volume 2, #7, the new Justice League Hall of Justice had replaced its original Skeets shell with the corpse of the corrupted Skeets from the pages of 52. It would take a lot of scavenging to fill this cavernous new Trophy Room!

Does the presence of Mr. Mind's Skeets mean that the JLA is aware Booster Gold saved the multiverse in 52? Probably not. As we've seen, the JLA, like a team of super-powered magpies, will put anything shiny in their Trophy Room. Everything that glisters may not be gold, but you can't tell that to the JLA.

How Many Costumes Does One Trophy Room Need?

All week, we've been looking at Booster Gold costumes found hanging in the JLA Trophy Rooms. On Monday we saw the Mark II. On Tuesday it was the Mark XI. Today, we return to the classics.

© DC Comics

As seen in this panel from JLA Secret Files #2, Zauriel introduces us to the prize possession of the JLA Trophy Room: Booster Gold's original armor.

Booster Gold's original Mark I powersuit, cobbled together from items stolen from the Space Museum in 2462, was destroyed by Doomsday, the same creature that "killed" Superman. Though the torn fabric could be repaired, 20th-century technology could not restore the suit's functions. Although Booster bravely wore the de-powered costume in one last adventure (seen in Justice League Europe #49 and #50), it was soon replaced with inferior and bulky 20th-century technology.

So there you have it. Booster Gold has 3 costumes hanging in the JLA Trophy Room. (How many Superman costumes do you think it has?) If anyone asks you why the JLA built a headquarters on the moon, tell them it is because they needed more closet space.

The JLA Are Just a League of Hoarders

Yesterday we saw Wally West in the JLA Trophy Room, and today we find Connor Hawke dropping by. Given that neither of these Justice League members exists in the DCnU, they themselves would make great Trophy Room displays! But that's not why we're here today.

© DC Comics

As seen in this panel from JLA #8, a variant of Booster's short-lived Mark XI armor hangs on the wall of the Trophy Room on the JLA Watchtower. When it first debuted, the Mark XI had an off-center star. Like the Mark II, which was retired for an upgrade, the Mark XI was also replaced while still operational for a style more similar to Booster's original Mark I power-suit.

This costume was designed by professor Emil Hamilton, yet another character erased by Flashpoint. Come to think of it, Ted Kord, designer of Booster's Mark II armor seen yesterday was also erased by Flashpoint. I begin to suspect that anyone who ever saw Booster Gold out of costume has been erased from DC history! Who would do such a nefarious thing?

Drop by tomorrow for even more Booster Gold swag found in the JLA Trophy Room!

Trophy Room or Storage Shed?

What? No one wants a stab at identifying the objects in the JLA trophy room? Maybe that's why they canceled Wizard magazine.

That's okay. There are a lot of obscure things in the JLA Trophy Room. Take this panel, for example.

© DC Comics

Of all the things that need labeling in this image from JLA #6, Green Arrow's "Trick Arrows" shouldn't even make the list. It's not like the League has had a lot of green-themed archers.

While most of the items in this image are rare indeed, at least one item should be strikingly familiar to fans of Booster Gold. That's the Blue Beetle-prototype Mark II Booster Gold armor in the bottom right. Booster only wore that suit for less than nine months in 1993 after his original 25th-century armor was destroyed in the fight with Doomsday. The Mark II was very quickly replaced with an improved model.

Don't think for a minute that's the only Booster Gold item on display in the JLI Trophy Room. Booster's far too important for just one item! I've got more tomorrow.
