This Day in History: Piling On

Martian Manhunter is getting a new mini-series in December that will rewrite the character as something a little more... alien than what longtime DC readers are used to. (DC's solicitation reads: "Back on Mars, J'onn was about as corrupt as a law officer can be, and when a reckoning comes for his entire society, he'll get a second chance he doesn't want or deserve!")

I can't say as I'm very eager about that. I happened to like J'onn J'onzz just the way he was.

Take, for example, the Martian Manhunter who appeared in "The Ghosts of Mars," a story running through JLA Classified #42-#46. Written by Justin Gray, the story focused entirely on J'onzz's internal struggle against his own inner demons. Demons that sometimes took the appearance of Booster Gold, as seen in JLA Classified #44, released on this date in 2007.

JLA Classified #44 by Justin Gray, Rick Leonardi, Sean Philips, I.L.L., John Hill

Each of the first four issues of "The Ghosts of Mars" shined a spotlight on a member of the Justice League who inspired Martian Manhunter to new heights of heroism. Ironically in light of recent events in the DCU, the hero of JLA Classified #44 is Wally West, aka The Flash.

Eleven years later, West is dead, Booster Gold is the suspect, and Manhunter is a corrupt cop. Is it any wonder I prefer to read back issues?

No Time for Flash

Booster booster Jackson Williams was reading The Flash #46 and caught this sequence of panels.

The Flash #46, words by Johsua Williamson; art by Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero

This issue of The Flash was released the week before Batman #47, but the former sure looks like it refers to the latter's meeting between Batman, Catwoman, and Booster Gold. (Which was, by the way, the first time that Booster Gold and Catwoman have ever met on panel.)

Thanks for the update, Jackson.

New Release: JLU Skeets in Flash 21

ComicsBeat.com has the exclusive preview of today's The Flash #21, and you don't have to look to hard to find a cameo appearance by the sidekick of the future, Skeets!

© DC Comics

This is hardly the first time we've seen Skeets' outer shell among the artifacts stored in the JLA trophy room. One version or another has been in the Watchtower since JLA Secret Files & Origins #2 in 1998. We saw a similar image in Justice League of America, volume 2, #7 in 2006.

However, this is the first time we've seen the Justice League Unlimited version of Skeets in the regular DCnU. Is this multiverse crossover a side effect of Convergence, Rebirth, or just an artist who likes the JLU look? Who cares? It's Skeets!

Thanks to Benni Beard for pointing out this easter egg!

Booster Gold Movie Still in the Works

If you watched The Flash on Tuesday, you might have recognized its similarity to Booster Gold Volume 1, #18. (Russ Burlingame covered the details for Comicbook.com). In what I'm sure was completely unrelated news, after the episode aired, writer Zack Stentz announced on Twitter that he was leaving the show.

Naturally, this announcement stirred up the show's hardcore fans. Had Stentz been fired by Flash producer Greg Berlanti? Was there trouble behind the scenes?

Stentz headed off any potential gossip in a follow-up tweet.

Everything was totally amicable, I'm still writing Booster Gold for Greg & company, & deeply love the writers, cast, & crew. -- @musezack 1 Feb 2017

Flash fans might be sad to see Stentz go, but Booster Gold fans have to be bouncing with joy knowing that work continues towards the Booster Gold movie.

Godspeed, Zack!

This Day in History: Booster Gold Inaction

Justice League America #78 was released on this date 23 years ago. I like to remember it as the time that Jay Garrick (the original Flash) lied to Booster Gold.

Despite what you see in the panel above, when Garrick led the post-"Death of Superman" Justice League into action, Booster was left at home.

Ah, the good old days. In hindsight, Booster should have been happy to appear on panel at all. #FreeBoosterGold
