Gonna Need to Borrow Some Fingers

Talkin Booster Gold

Shawn Baston dropped by last week's comments to alert us to a new instance of characters talking about Booster Gold behind his back. In this case, May's Green Lantern #35, it was Kyle Rayner referencing a movie playing on Booster's public reputation as the Crusader of Capitalism:

Sleazy Don Darlington strikes me as the Roger Corman-type who makes low-budget films to capitalize on existing trends, so I doubt Booster Gold himself played any part in the making of "Booster's Quadrillion," which any Booster Gold fan already invested in key events from 1985 probably recognizes as a parody of the 16th highest grossing film of that year: Brewster's Millions staring Richard Pryor and John Candy.

Of course, all time travelers know that history is cyclical. The 1985 Brewster's Millions was a remake of a film by the same name from 1945, which was a remake of a film by the same name from 1935, which was a remake of a film by the same name from 1921, which was a remake of a film by the same name from 1914, which was based on a 1906 play of the same name adapted from a 1902 book of the same name by George Barr McCutcheon.

The premise of each adaptation is that young Brewster has to spend some amount of millions of dollars in a set amount of time in order to inherit a larger amount of millions of dollars. All tallied, across the five movies telling essentially the same story (and without adjusting for inflation), Brewster has to spend about thirty-five million ($35,000,000) to earn three hundred forty-eight million ($348,000,000).

That's a lot of money, but it's no quadrillion. A quadrillion is a staggeringly large number. If Brewster earns $348 million every five movies, he'd have to make 14,367,812 more movies to make one quadrillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000,000).

Before you get started, Brewster, a word of warning: You're going to run into a spot of bother after you've made the first 14,367 movies because by that time you will have already earned all the money in the world. So for movie 14,368, you're going to need to buy a printing press.

Of course, Booster Gold can access a quadrillion dollars because he is not limited to the present day, or really any restriction of time or space. Maybe the quadrillion he's after isn't even money but something more valuable: time. It's a good thing Booster's functionally immortal. It takes over 31,688,764 years to gather a quadrillion seconds.

The one thing Booster needs to know before he gets started is whether he needs a quadrillion units in American short scale or a quadrillion of the traditional British long scale. These days, most English-speaking countries use the short scale where a quadrillion has 15 zeroes, but a time-traveler like Booster could easily get confused since the English were counting to a quadrillion with 24 zeroes long before the United States existed. That's a difference of nine zeroes! A factor of a full billion! (Or, if you're using the long scale, a factor of one thousand million!) To put that in perspective, it would mean an additional 31,688,764,583,724,000 years of gathering seconds. Obviously, confusing the two would be a very big mistake. Better be sure, Booster.

Thanks for spotting that for us, Shawn.

All the Movie News That's Fit to Print

Believe it or not, one of my least favorite parts of running a website devoted to a comic book superhero is wading through all the Internet rumors and arguments about potential appearances in other media. I love movies as much as the next guy, but not superhero movies. My imagination brings superhero comic books to life better than Hollywood screenwriters and CGI.

Despite my personal misgivings, I recognize that Booster Gold fans are really, really interested the subject, and I admit that tracking a history of such things falls squarely inside the mandate that I have set for myself here at Boosterrific.com. In the past, I've put that content into the Boosterrific! Blog, but I recognize that information there can be a little hard to dig out.

Therefore, I have finally come to the decision to build a single landing page for credible reporting (with supporting source links where available) on all of the DC-sanctioned live-action projects that have ever been considered. You'll find it in the menu above under Booster Gold > Movie Development. Or, if you're in a hurry, here's a direct link: boosterrific.com/booster/movie.php

Comic Word

Argentinian comic book fan Pablo Stadelman, author of three books about comics, Cosa De Fans, Cosa De Fans 2, and Decisiones Heroicas, has now made a documentary movie about comics featuring some names that will be familiar to readers of Booster Gold's adventures!

Palabra de Comic

Quoting from the email Pablo sent me:

The movie name Is "Palabra de comic' (comic word) and it's a personal project that i made myself without any technical and financial help.

For the first time, twelve of the great comic book creators are coming together. Through interviews and examples of their incredible work, these artists reveal their philosophy and the creative processes behind their comic book artworks, from 1940 to the present. This documentary provides insight into the working methods of both iconic publishers, DC Comics and Marvel, while also providing firsthand insight into the details of each of their projects, how they originated, and the impact each had on their careers. Professionals also analyze the evolution of the industry from its beginnings to the present, developing key aspects for the development of the industry. Additionally, this documentary features never-before-seen archival footage from both DC and Marvel, providing insight into how each of the artists and writers involved made it possible to carry out their work. It's a unique opportunity to see artists share their own experiences in the field and how it changed their professional lives. Featuring Bob Rozakis, Jon Bogdanove, Bob Hall, Allen Milgrom, Dan Didio, Val Semeiks, Steve Mitchell, Evan Skolnick, Joseff Rubinstein, Tom DeFalco, Irene Vartanoff and Barbara Randall.

Fans in Argentina should keep an eye out for the movie in select theaters soon.

Keep up the good work, Pablo.

Just Another Day on the Internet

If you're a hardcore Booster Gold fan (and if you're on Boosterrrific.com, chances are good), you probably know that his Legion of Super-Heroes Flight Ring is about 500 years old, his mother has no first name, and he has sassed Darkseid to his rocky face and lived to tell the tale.

You've also probably heard that Warner Bros Discovery, by way of James Gunn and DC Studios, has a Booster Gold television series in the works. You might have heard talk recently that the role has been cast and the television series is scheduled to start filming in July, as many corners of the Internet have been reporting just that.

Except, apparently, it's not. Many of the same corners of the Internet are now reporting that James Gunn (or his social media manager) has taken a break from developing the latest movie about Booster Gold's biggest rival, that goody-two-shoes Superman, to throw cold water on those Booster Gold rumors via a post at some social media website or other.

Honestly, at this point, I don't know what to believe. Were the initial reports hoaxes? Or is Gunn just trying to disguise the truth now that the cat's out of the bag? One way or the other, I suppose we'll find out the truth one day, right Superman?

Hey, if Superman's not above stealing a whole bunch of newsprint to hide his secret identity, can he really be all that mad at Booster Gold for "borrowing" some dusty old museum pieces to fight crime? (Bet they won't mention that in the Booster Gold television show.)

They Were Serious about the "Infinite" Part

Rob Snow alerts me that Warner Bros has released a trailer for Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three that contains images of Booster Gold.

So I went looking, and sure enough, at about 12 seconds in, there's our boy:

© DC Comics
Booster Gold, Red Star, Star Sapphire, Starfire, Starman: what is this, Earth-Shooting Stars?

So whenever that movie comes out (the trailer just says "coming soon"), know that it'll have at least a second or two of Booster Gold in it. At least until the Anti-Monitor kills him.

If you want to see the rest of the trailer, you can find it on YouTube.com.

Thanks, Rob.
