Watercoloring with Tears

The best thing about fan art is that it gives us the opportunity to see things denied to us by official canon. Like NuBooster Gold and post-Crisis Blue Beetle.

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle by therealRIZ

Seeing the two together makes me suspect that perhaps DC won't bring Ted Kord back because Booster Gold is now wearing Ted's old pants.

This sepia-tinged watercolor (and its split-windshield Skeets, complete with rope ladder action!) was created by German artist therealRIZ. Riz has quite a bit of impressive, comic book-related work in his gallery at Deviant Art.

Sales History of Issue 10

Believe it or not, Booster Gold has appeared in 4 separate number 10 issues of ongoing series in the past 4 years. One of those series was his own, which made it through a run of 49 issues. Two of the others had already been canceled at the time the issue was published. The third is the current Blue Beetle series, which has sales numbers far worse than any of the other three series ever had, but has not yet been cancelled.

Sales of 10th issues of ongoing series featuring Booster Gold appearances, 2008-2012

Granted, this random sampling of DC's production is hardly conclusive, but superficially it would seem that we should expect an ongoing with Booster Gold to sell right about 30,000 by the 10th month. (Booster gets the least face time in his one-page cameo in Blue Beetle, and it has the lowest sales. Coincidence or proof?)

Whatever else it may or may not say about DC's editorial policies, this chart does seem to demonstrate that cancellation is due more to editorial expectations or whims than just sales figures. Someone at DC must love Blue Beetle.

Blue and Gold Forever?

Wow. Nearly half of you indicate that you the cancellation of Justice League International means that you will be giving DC Comics less money each month. If the same percentage of JLI readers agree with you Booster Gold fans, DC could be losing $60,000 in gross sales each month starting in September.

Last week's poll question: How will the cancellation of JLI affect your comic book-buying habits? (42 votes)

How will the cancellation of JLI affect your comic book-buying habits?

I agree with you, voters. The prospect of no Booster Gold after September still has me worried about how long I'll be left waiting for my next Booster fix. DC will have to put Booster in something to get my monthly $4.00 back. After Booster's appearance in Blue Beetle last week, I'm wondering if the duo are destined to be reunited.

New Old Releases: Infinite Crisis Omnibus

Twenty years after he debuted in 1985's Booster Gold, Volume 1, #1, Booster Gold had faded from sight into the background of the DC Universe. Considered a laughingstock by other heroes and readers alike, his career and popularity was at its lowest point. That all changed thanks to Infinite Crisis.

Following the death of Blue Beetle (and the disassembly of Skeets) in Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Booster Gold became DC's avatar of pathos as he searched for the man responsible for the murder of his best friend (and sidekick). From death came rebirth as this ultimately led to Booster reclaiming his time travel ability as well as his position among the more prominent DC heroes.

Today, DC releases to comic shops The Infinite Crisis Omnibus. This 1,152-page hardcover collects all of the key books in the Infinite Crisis event and its four mini-series lead-ins. That's a lot of Booster Gold! The edition will retail for $150.00, which is about what it would cost you to pick up all these issues individually at your local comic shop.

As mega-crossover events go, Infinite Crisis is about as good as it gets. Too bad that Flashpoint, an example of how bad mega-crossover events can be, removed the story of Infinite Crisis from continuity. It's equally too bad that DC doesn't realize that by reminding us how entertaining their character development and continuity used to be, we won't ever be satisfied with the confusing and misguided post-Flashpoint DCnU.

New Release: Blue Beetle #10

Booster Gold's one-panel appearance in Wednesday's Blue Beetle, Volume 3, #10 caught me entirely by surprise, despite the fact that we all knew Booster would be guest starring in next month's issue #11. (We did all know that and were already planning to purchase it, right?) Thanks to Morgenstern for pointing this appearance out.

To make up for my lax oversight, I present to you the Blue Beetle comic I wish Booster Gold had appeared in this week:

All Star Blue and Gold by Thormeister at deviantart.com

The above image must be the best All Star issue that DC never published. Unwilling to wait for DC to get around to publishing this series, clearly the greatest idea in the history of comics, Thormeister created this as the cover to an entire 7-page story pitting the pair against Darth Vader. You can find that whole story and more in Thormeister's gallery at Deviant Art.
