Happy 87th Birthday to Carmine Infantino

Carmine Infantino was a key figure in the Silver Age of DC Comics, both as an artist and later serving as DC Comic's editorial director and publisher. Infantino died earlier this year, and I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate his birthday by showing the only time Infantino ever drew Booster Gold in a DC publication: 1986's Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe Volume XXI.

Starting in 1959, Infantino drew many of Garnder Fox's Space Museum stories in Strange Adventures a quarter century before Booster Gold would steal the museum's treasures (and Skeets!) to start a career as a time-traveling crime fighter.

If you think about it, even though Infantino drew Booster Gold only once in his professional career as an illustrator, there wouldn't have been a Booster Gold without the work of Carmine Infantino. Thank you and Happy 87th Birthday, Mr. Infantino.

Celebrating Booster Gold

As I said last week, 2012 was not a good year for Booster Gold. When the best thing that you can say is "at least DC didn't treat him like they treated one of the most popular and best-selling characters of the past 20 years by pretending he never existed," that's not a good year.

Last week's poll question: ( votes)

Booster Gold turns the big negative 430 this Saturday. How would you celebrate if you were a time traveler who still wouldn't be born for another four hundred and thirty years?

Happy Birthday, Mark Waid

© DC Comics

Shortly after being ambushed by Devastator in 1994's Justice League America #89, Booster Gold was pronounced dead in Justice League Task Force #13. A decade later in 52 Week 15, Booster Gold was killed (again!) following a jealous struggle with Supernova. It seems that no supervillain wants Booster Gold dead as much as Mark Waid, the author of both comic books.

Waid made up for his transgressions by writing for Booster a rousing call to action. Booster delivered the following speech to the Justice League at the foot of Mount Everest in Justice League Task Force #14 (seen at left).

It's fourth and goal... and the fate of the world rests on this drive.

There's five and a half miles of mountain between us and the end of the world...

...so I'd suggest we get a move on.

While that's no "Saint Crispin's Day" speech, it is pretty good for a comic book. It's also not the only thing for which Booster Gold fans have to thank Mark Waid. Waid was the editor of Secret Origins #35, and wrote the informative article "Secrets Behind the Origins" detailing Booster Gold's unused pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths origin (where he stole not from the Space Museum but the Superman Museum!).

Thanks, Mark Waid. Boosterrific.com wishes you a Happy Birthday!

New Releases: DCU Online Legends #24

February 29 is Superman's birthday. Naturally, anything that is good for Superman is anathema to Booster Gold, so it should come as no surprise that Booster has never appeared in a comic released on February 29. And after today, he still might not have.

DC released preview art for DC Universe Online Legends #24 last week on The Source that mentions -- but does not show -- our hero. It also implies that we will not be seeing our hero... ever again. (At least in the alternate continuity of the DCU Online video game.)

So does Booster finally get his Leap Year on or not? Buy this issue and let Skeets know if he should start collecting unemployment.

Happy Birthday, Ultra Boy

Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the Legion of Super-Heroes' most prominent members, Ultra Boy. Ultra Boy and Booster Gold go way back: Ultra Boy was one of the first 3 heroes to "greet" Booster Gold in his debut in 1985.

© DC Comics

While their relationship may have started off on the wrong foot, it improved over time. The two heroes from the future would meet one another time and time again. As you might expect with Ultra Boy, whose powers only work one at a time, only one of the pair can ever seem to remember the other.

© DC Comics

Certainly, it doesn't help that for years, the two seemed to be constantly switching costumes or noms de guerre. Then time was re-written and everything old was new again. As all good time-cops know, anyone who doesn't remember their history is doomed to repeat it.

Here's to you, Ultra Boy. Even if you can't remember your birthday, we can.
