J.M. DeMatteis, Both Brave and Bold

J.M. DeMatteis, once and future writer for Booster Gold, gave a recent interview to iFanboy.com about, among other things, his upcoming return to writing for the character of Booster Gold. Perhaps the most appealing information from the interview is the revelation that the Justice League International will be making a guest appearance in an upcoming episode of Batman: the Brave and the Bold next season on Cartoon Network. Super, super sweet.

Dan Jurgens, Time Master

Last week DC sprung the news that Booster would be appearing in a third book this summer: Time Masters: Vanishing Point by writer/artist Dan Jurgens. Though the book is a mini-series tied into the return of Batman, it's great to know that Jurgens will still be involved with the life of Booster Gold even though he is leaving the series. Read what Jurgens has to say about the series at Newsarama.com.

Booster Gold Versus The Clock King

Booster Gold Volume 2 Sales Vs Canceled TitlesRecent sales of Booster Gold have continued their downward trend from before the hiccup of Blackest Night, demonstrating unequivocally that DC's zombie-fest has provided no long-term boost in readers for Booster. Note that these numbers are linear with the continued downward trend in sales for Booster Gold and are not indicative of any significant change in readership habits due to the planned departure of Dan Jurgens. (The truth of the previous statement will be revealed in coming months, once sales figures are released for the first few Giffen and DeMatteis issues.)

Fortunately, recent history also suggests that DC's average cancellation threshold (the line in red above) is low enough and flexible enough that the series will last at least another 12 months, benefiting from the full length of the Generation Lost maxi-series. And despite Booster's falling sales numbers, DC clearly has a lot of faith in the character to feature him in at least 3 series this summer. Should Generation Lost or Time Masters: Vanishing Point perform well, there could still be a be a sales boon for Booster Gold which would postpone the executioner's axe. Only time will tell.

Nekron and Taxes

Think your taxes are complicated? Stop and think a moment about Booster Gold, the world's least altruistic super hero, and his income derived entirely from public sponsorships. With no secret identity (the IRS recognizes Booster as a legal alien named "Booster Gold"), it's not like he can hide any cash in his other clothes. Presumably Booster has an unseen agent and accountant. Hopefully they are more honest than his first manager, Dirk Davis, who embezzled Booster's multi-billion fortune in the late 1980s when he turned traitor against the entire human race. Good help is so hard to find.

New Release: Booster Gold #31

Booster Gold, Volume 2, #31 hits stands today. This is the last Dan Jurgens' written or drawn issue for the foreseeable future. (Apologies to tiggerpete, who is certainly disappointed that it was not written by Geoff Johns. Keep a stiff upper lip, 'pete, your day will come again.) Buy it and make Skeets happy.
