The Future of Television Is Maximum HBO

I'm never one to spread rumors, but ever since news broke that Greg Berlanti and Zack Stentz were working on a Booster Gold movie, rumor is about all we've had to talk about.

The skinny from David James of WeGotThisCovered.com is that

"[S]ome upcoming DCEU movies may skip theaters and premiere on HBO Max. The big name we're hearing is that Booster Gold could be the first feature film release for the service."

In case you hadn't already heard, Warner Bros will jump into the greedy proprietary streaming service game in May 2020. The service will stream content from across Warner Bros properties, both pre-existing and newly created. Berlanti has already announced two DC-themed shows.

As a result of that announcement, it seems a safe bet that the days are numbered for Warner Bros' existing DC Universe streaming service. We already know that at least some of its content (specifically Doom Patrol) will be moving to HBO Max. Therefore, if a Booster Gold movie is ever going to happen, it seems logical to assume that will be showing up at HBO Max, too.

Of course, that's all speculation. Like I said: rumors are about all we have to talk about when it comes to Booster Gold: The Movie.

Holy Hollywood, Booster Gold

We still don't have Booster Gold: the Movie lighting up marquees, but that doesn't mean that there's no news about Booster Gold in pictures. Two pieces from recent movies news reports:

1. Booster Gold was in Shazam!

You know, I'm in a good mood tonight. Yeah, sure, that's Booster Gold. Why not. That's canon now. @ponysmasher Oct 11, 2019

That's Shazam! director David Sandberg responding with tongue held firmly in cheek to a question on Twitter. Before you laugh too hard, know that this might be the only way we ever get to see Booster Gold on the big screen.

2. Booster's first opponent, Blackguard, will be in Suicide Squad 2.

Blackguard announced as member of James Gunn's 'Suicide Squad' sequel. Portrayed by Pete Davidson, from SNL. @BoosterCola Oct 12, 2019

Booster Gold and Blackguard shared the cover to Booster Gold #1, so how is it that the minor villain will make it into movies before our hero? DC and Warner Bros must be taking Booster's "Greatest Hero You've Never Heard Of" tag seriously.

To be fair, Blackguard wasn't just a Booster Gold enemy. He was a minor player in the long-forgotten Underworld Unleashed event, accepting Neron's offer to become "The Human Killing Spree" and running afoul of Guy Gardner's clone, Joe. Blackguard didn't join the Suicide Squad until 2008. Spoiler alert: he didn't survive that experience.

For more pics of Davidson as Blackguard, follow the tweet's link to dailymail.co.uk. (Don't waste time worrying that Davidson is a little small for the part. Blackguard, like Booster, gains his strength from his power suit.)

UPDATE 2019-10-15: As Steven points out in the comments, it appears that Nathan Fillion, not Pete Davidson, will be playing Blackguard. That's very interesting, in part because Fillion looks more naturally like the comics incarnation of the character and partly because of the long history of fans wanting Fillion to play Booster Gold.

UPDATE 2021-08-05: The movie has finally been released, and it is definitely Pete Davidson in the role of Blackguard.

Thanks for the tweets, tipsters.

Yeah, But How?

I don't read Batman, so I missed it when Batman #72 came out back in June and finally answered a question we had about Batman #50.

You remember Batman #50, right? That's the one that was supposed to end with a wedding, but instead ended with Bane standing around with his pals. And Skeets.

What was Skeets doing in a room full of villains? According to Batman #72, he was just another discarded tool.

The "you" in the above text is Bane. So it's really Bane's fault that Booster Gold was a total idiot in Batman #45. I guess.

So Bane is so smart he knew how Booster's meddling with history would ruin the world in exactly the way that he needed it to? And he knew that Booster would go out of his way to tell Batman what he experienced in the pocket universe that his idiocy created?

And while we're on the topic, if Skeets' only purpose was to depress Bruce Wayne, why did Bane bother to recover Skeets after Batman #47?

Guh. Whatever, Tom King. Whatever.

The Blot's Sketchbook: Comicpalooza 2017

I begged The Blot for another peek at his Booster Gold sketchbook, and he finally gave in! Check out these two he picked up at last year's Comicpalooza convention in Houston:

From left to right, that's the work of David Finch and Tony Harris. (Click on either image to see a larger pic in a new window.)

You can see more of The Blot Says' Booster Gold Sketchbook on Flickr.com.

Thanks, Blot. You're a true Booster booster!

What We Learned from NYCC 2015

Not a lot of Booster Gold news out of New York Comic Con this year. Is there really a Booster Gold movie in the works? Warner Brothers still isn't talking.

But while Warner remains silent, late-night comedian and writer Seth Meyers wasn't so shy. He held a panel at NYCC which Brett White covered for Spinoff Online.

"When I read comics, I loved teams. I loved X-Men and Justice League for that reason. Superman on his own is less interesting than Superman with Batman." [Moderator Jesse David] Fox then asked Meyers about his favorite X-Men and Justice League teams; Meyers called out the Blue Beetle/Booster Gold "Justice League" run and Joss Whedon's "Astonishing X-Men."

With fans like Nathan Fillion and Seth Meyers, how can we not get a Booster Gold movie in the works? (Thanks, Seth. We think that your show is pretty good, too.)

For the whole interview, check out spinoff.comicbookresources.com.
