My Favorite Pages: Booster Gold 16

My Favorite Pages

Booster Gold #16 is peak 1980s. From the "Greed is Good"-era mock corporate advertising on the cover to Booster's Miami Vice white suit with untied high-top kicks and short-cropped hair, this thing oozes day-glow and Rubik's cubes.

And while I do love all that stuff — after all, I am a child of the 80s who grew up with Knight Rider and Transformers — the page I appreciate the most in this issue is the throwback to the Silver and Bronze Ages of comics when readers were treated to cutaway views of important places like the Batcave or the Fortress of Solitude.

Meet the Booster Gold International Mansion (with garage and helipad in back)!

Check out that American Flag in the Entertainment and Press Room! Rambo couldn't have done it better.

I Am a Party Crasher

I've been innundated by great tips lately, and I do mean that in the best possible way. The latest tip comes from J, who writes:

I don't know if you're aware of the children's book "I am Superman", by Brad Meltzer and Christopher Eliopoulos. (I couldn't find it when I searched this website.)

Near the end of it, there's a two-page spread of superheroes, and Booster has a cameo at the top of the right-hand page. At the back of the book, there's also a guide, listing all the heroes in the spread, and Booster is marked as #55.

This is the second half of that two-page spread, where you can see Booster Gold hanging out with Superman's best friend, Krypto!

Thanks for letting us know, J. I have already updated the Boosterrific Books! page with your find.

Keep your eyes open, everybody. Booster Gold is everywhere!

My Favorite Pages: Booster Gold 13

I hope you're in the mood for some T&A today!

My Favorite Pages

Booster Gold #13 is the only time Gary Martin ever inked a Booster Gold adventure, and the difference between it and what came before is striking. Take page 10 as an example:

© DC Comics

Surgically clean lines, heavy black shadowing, and screentone gradients all contribute to a fittingly moody environment as a weakened Booster Gold struggles back into the super-hero saddle.

Or maybe that mood is just the sexual tension between scantily-clad Trixie and full-moon Booster?

"Ready to go," indeed!

Teen Titans Speak!

Booster booster Marty writes

not sure if anyone's tipped you off to this yet, but booster had a speaking appearance in a recent episode of teen titans go! (season 7, episode 46, "TV Knight 7") i can't speak to the quality of the episode as a whole as i've only seen the relevant part (i.e. where booster was on screen), but i'll admit to getting a chuckle or two out of it.

I found some confusion as to whether "TV Knight 7" is Teen Titans Go! season 7 episode 46 as reported on or episode 45 as counted by Whatever number it is, it does indeed give Booster Gold his first speaking part in the series.

The Cartoon Network link above will take you to a preview of the episode, in which you can hear Booster in action, voiced by Fred Tatasciore.

Unlike Marty, I have watched the entire episode, written by Luke Cormican and Josh Weisbrod and directed by Cormican. It's got a real Robot Chicken feel to it, and like most anthologies, its short, unconnected gags — a Mad-style blend of television and comics tropes — can be a bit hit or miss. I thought the Booster Gold segment was the episode's highlight, but I admit I may have a bit of a bias there.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll thank Marty for bringing this to your attention.

Superheroes As Pets

Once a week, Brian Cronin asks Twitter for silly superhero suggestions for random artists to draw for his "Line it is Drawn" column at Last week, the topic was

In honor of the League of Super Pets, suggest a superhero that you'd like to see a generic pet drawn as, or feel free to supply a pic of your own pet as a suggestion. So either, say,

That delightful exchange got the world this drawing, from artist Caanan Grall:

Brilliant! I think this is a masterful expression of everything I want in a comic book.

Thanks to Eskana for pointing this out.
