It would be nice if they let other heroes in the movie spotlight rather than endless reboots of Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. I'm almost thinking along the lines of Avengers but with Justice League International instead.

The "shared universe" Marvel movies started with Iron Man, not bigger names like the X-Men, Spider-Man, or Captain America before we ever got to Avengers. I agree that it seems a logical step for DC to build an audience with smaller-budget films about some of their very deep roster of characters before bringing them together for a JLI movie. But Warner Brothers sees the dollar figures Marvel movies are making and is greedy for that income. As much as I like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, it's going to be hard for a buddy movie starting a pair of b-listers to make $500 million.

As far as box office goes we'll see. It isn't as usual as it might seem that films top 500 million $ worldwide. Ant-Man for example was a character on the same level of "fame" as Blue & Gold and that film did earn $519,250,779 in the end. This being said i think we're on the right track with the smaller budget it wholly depends on how much time-travel we want I'd say.

ANT-MAN is an installment in the thriving Marvel movie franchise. It has a built-in audience worth hundreds of millions. Booster and Beetle have no such framework to support them at this time. (And so long as all DC does is reboot Batman and Superman, they never will.)

I wouldn't even consider myself a "DC guy" but have some trust in the process. At this point they've announced their line-up with, so far, 10 films coming up from BvS in march 'til Green Lantern Corps in June of 2020. At the point that Blue & Gold does get made if it happens it will have a solid ground to stand on either as "just" a DC property or as a part of the DC Extended Universe.

That being said my original point was that 500 $ million in worldwide box office isn't by any means an easy target to reach. And even if this changes in the coming years it won't be that large of a change in terms of the actual films that go above that limit (even if say 20 films a year doing it would be a pretty large change by %). Bringing up Ant-Man was mostly to illustrate the positive angle in that unknown characters can make for big money films. Perhaps i should have used something like Kingsman which made $414,351,546 instead too not get you peeved but i wanted an example over 500 mil $ since that was the number you started with and Ant-Man was just such an obivous one.

First of all, I'm not peeved. (I mean, I live in state of perpetual dissatisfaction, but this particular conversation doesn't bother me at all.)

Secondly, I think we're largely in agreement. I agree that $500 million isn't an easy target. I chose $500 million as an example exactly because of ANT-MAN, which according to most pre-release projections, over-performed against expectations. I was trying to say that we shouldn't expect Blue/Gold to manage to reach the surprise success of ANT-MAN because 1) they are properties unknown to the general public and 2) they don't have the support network of a larger, successful "shared universe" brand that has so obviously been useful to get the general public in the door for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ANT-MAN.

Thirdly, I do not share your faith in Warner Brothers' ability to build a shared universe in the Marvel/Disney style. Their past is filled with false starts, missteps, and failed follow-through. Announcing movies isn't the same thing as releasing them. That could change, but past history is the best indicator of future performance, and Warner's history tells me that if SUPERMAN v BATMAN doesn't shatter box office records, studio executives will considered the whole thing a failure, abort their plans, and send the whole mess back to the drawing board.

As I said in the original post, I'll be happy enough if Warner Brothers actually makes a Blue Beetle and Booster Gold movie. Honestly, I don't expect it to happen, because I don't see how it could make $500 million, and I doubt Warner Brothers would be willing to settle for less.
