What the Flashpoint?

WonderCon 2013 was this past weekend, and DC went ahead and made it official that Booster Gold will be guest-starring in All-Star Western #19-21. Our pal Russ Burlingame at ComicBook.com reports writer Jimmy Palmiotti's quote from the "DC All Access Panel" yesterday:

In the next issue of Jonah Hex, we have a special guest... running around with Jonah Hex will be none other than Booster Gold.

You can read details from the whole panel at Newsarama.com, but the fact that Booster will be in All-Star Western isn't really new news. However, something else I found reported from WonderCon is a little more exciting.

AnotherMealTicket.com reports that the "f" in the "WTF" issues appearing this month from DC will stand for "Flashpoint," and it seems that Booster won't just be travelling across the DCU, he'll be remembering it:

...Inside sources at DC were overheard this weekend at WonderCon 2013 saying we should expect to see plenty of the mysterious Pandora and finally hear Booster Gold admit that he remembers the old DC Universe!

It's about time! Thanks to MetalWoman and Morgenstern for posting the news in the Boosterrific Forum.

Talking Shop

Last week, in regards to sales of Justice League of America, I said, "I suspect that since DC isn't crowing about how great [sales] have been, they can't find anything to crow about." Looks like I was very, very wrong.

According to Comichron.com, Justice League of America and its 53 covers was the best selling book for the month of February... since 1996!

Comichron goes on to note that this book even outsold Superman: The Wedding Album (November 1996), the previous best-seller since DC signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Diamond Comics Distributors in 1995. That's great news for Booster Gold fans, who saw their hero get his first in-continuity reference in months.

(Aside: For years, a good friend of mine who has owned a comic book store since the early 1990s had several unopened cartons of "white-bagged" Superman: The Wedding Album in his basement. It took him the better part of two decades to unload the unwanted issues that the hype following Death of Superman had lured him into over-ordering. I still tease him about that overly-ambitious order. Needless to say, his order for Justice League of America was much more conservative.)

While Justice League of America sold better than all comics in recent memory, there is ample evidence to suggest that fans were buying for the "53 covers!" gimmick, not the concept itself. Over at ComicBook.com, Russ Burlingame points out that Katana and Vibe, the tie-in series to JLoS, sold comparatively poorly at #80 and #78 respectively for the month. This a surprise, especially considering their pedigrees. Burlingame notes:

It's been a long time since [writer Geoff] Johns launched a title that debuted out of the top 50; back in 2007, Booster Gold came in at #58....

As we know, Booster Gold was cancelled after 4 years, but mainly because of Flashpoint. (Yes, sales were falling, but the title would indisputably have reached #50 if not for the Great Random Reboot of 2011.) What are the odds that Johns' latest series, Vibe, makes it even half that long?

WTF, It's Booster Gold

Last week, there was some debate about whether the character teased in DC Comics Presents #19 was going to be Booster Gold. The case against it looked pretty clear, as the results of the poll suggest.

Last week's poll question: Will the time-displaced hero in DC PRESENTS #19 be Booster Gold? (43 votes)

Will the time-displaced hero in DC PRESENTS #19 be Booster Gold?

But yesterday, Buzzfeed.com released a list of teases about DC's April solicitations. First and foremost was news about our hero.

  • Booster Gold reappears while an entire team disappears

Whoo-hoo! Now we need to know where. Could we have been wrong about DC Comics Presents? Over at ComicBook.com, Russ Burlingame suggests Justice League Dark or Stormwatch. Months back, we were told that we'd see Booster in Justice League of America, although we could certainly see him first in Justice League. Is that Booster's force field on the cover of Vibe? Might the disappearing team referenced in the tease be Suicide Squad, who all look dead on their cover?

So many options! We need more clues! Where's Rip Hunter's chalkboard when you need it?

Where do you think we should start looking? How about I give you the option of voting for up to 3 titles that DC solicited for April, and we'll narrow down the search from those that get votes.

Upcoming Releases: DC Presents #19

I rarely do this, but I've received so many notices about it, I think I can avoid it no longer. For the record: no, it does not look like Booster Gold will be the mystery guest solicited for the final issue of DC Presents.

DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #19
Written by TONY BEDARD
Art by JESUS SAIZ
Fold-out cover by JESUS MERINO
On sale APRIL 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T • FINAL ISSUE
• In this final issue, what time displaced-hero has arrived on our world—and is the destruction he brings the herald to a great disaster?

That tease was from the April Soliciatations released last week, and it has caused many of you to speculate that the "time-displaced hero" is Booster Gold. Russ Burlingame ran an article about it at ComicBook.com, and we discussed it in the Boosterrific Forum. We all came to the same conclusion: it's probably not Booster Gold.

The sword seen on the revealed half of the gatefold cover looks notably like the sword carried by Beowulf in a back-up feature in Sword of Sorcery. DC Presents #19 is written by Tony Bedard, who also writes Beowulf's story in Sword of Sorcery. Combine those two facts and it sure looks like that "time-displaced hero" will be Beowulf. Not Booster Gold.

The only way to find out for sure will be to check out DC Presents #9 when it is released April 17, 2013, but Booster Gold fans probably shouldn't be getting their hopes up.

Booster Gold the Television Show Update

Wednesday, IGN.com published an interview between Jesse Schedeen and Andrew Kreisberg. Most of the Q&A focuses on The CW's Arrow, which Kreisberg executive produces, but Schedeen managed to save the most important question for last:

IGN Comics: Before we end off, I wanted to ask about another show you've been working on. Back during SDCC you revealed that you were preparing to submit your first script for the Booster Gold series you're developing for SyFy. Is there any update on that show right now?

Kreisberg: [laughs] I got a little waylaid by Arrow. Booster Gold is going in in the next couple weeks before Christmas. We'll see what happens from there. It's such a different project even though they're both DC Comics properties. Booster is much more candy and popcorn, being about time travel and changing the future and being a superhero who can fly. But they're both super-fun projects. As a lifelong DC Comics fan, I am beyond blessed to be working on these projects with all these amazing characters.

Booster Gold fans certainly have something to look foward to this Christmas season! Thanks to Russ Burlingame at ComicBook.com and MetalWoman in the Boosterrific Forum for bringing this bit of good news to our attention.
