Opinions in Crisis

Upon first read, I thought I was okay with Heroes in Crisis #1. Yes, it is heavy on atmosphere and light on story, but after Tom King's criminal misuse of Booster Gold in "The Gift", I decided that this was at least somewhat more respectful of my hero (even as it spits in the eye of the entire DC "Rebirth" initiative).

Then I read what ScreenRant.com and IGN.com and ComicBook.com had to say about it. (Warning: links contains spoilers.)

Now I'm wondering if perhaps my worst fears about this series weren't fearful enough. Since so many people seem to think that writer Tom King is some kind of literary genius — an opinion I have not shared since I read Batman, Volume 4 #1 — might Heroes in Crisis poison Booster Gold for the general public in the same sort of way that Marvel's revelation that Hank Pym was a mentally addled wife beater tarnished that once great character? *Gulp*

But maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe I'm just overprotective of my favorite character. Call me Chicken Little.

Am I alone? Let's find out.

Hope Only Floats So Long

Booster Gold fans are less optimistic than I expected.

Last week's poll question: Are you still expecting Warner Bros to release a live-action Booster Gold movie? (43 votes)

Are you still expecting Warner Bros to release a live-action Booster Gold movie?

I can't say as I blame you. Warner Bros certainly doesn't seem to know what they're doing, and that makes it awfully hard to have faith that they'll do our hero justice.

Those of you who have lost faith may enjoy reading the somewhat rambling opinion piece "The DC Extended Universe needs to die" at Destructoid.com. I did.

Sunset Superman

Last week's announcement about Henry Cavill's departure from future DC Comics movies sent a lot of websites scrambling to re-report what we all thought we knew about Warner Bros' big screen plans.

Some of those sites, like DenOfGeek.com (which ran an updated repost) had Greg Berlanti's Booster Gold on their list, whereas io9.com added our hero as an editorial afterthought, and Movieweb.com ignored Booster altogether.

Of course, it *has* been a long time since we've gotten any real update on the progress of that venture. Last month, screenwriter Zack Stentz seemed to imply it was dead (or at least his involvement in it is). So let's test the mood of Booster Gold fandom on this.

Holding Our Breath

The fans have spoken.

Last week's poll question: What is your reaction to the news that Tom King will be writing Booster Gold as a murder suspect in the HEROES IN CRISIS mini-series? (72 votes)

What is your reaction to the news that Tom King will be writing Booster Gold as a murder suspect in the HEROES IN CRISIS mini-series?

A majority of respondents in the poll are clearly unenthusiastic about Tom King's announced plans for Booster Gold. Maybe things will turn out well for our hero. Maybe he'll save the multiverse and get his own series. It's happened before.

I guess we'll find out whether our hopes and fears are founded this September.

All I Do Is Complain

I've noticed that Dan Jurgens has been publicly silent about Tom King's recent reinterpretation of Booster Gold. However, Booster's creator did recently speak up about Clay Mann's pencil art for the upcoming Heroes in Crisis mini-series.

Probably not allowed to post this, but here's the first page of HIC by my older brother in comics, @Clay_Mann_. Just so you can see how pretty this book's going to be. -- @TomKingTK, June 14, 2018

High fives to @Clay_Mann_ for getting BG's hair right. Most don't, but he nailed it! -- @thedanjurgens, June 14, 2018

That's an endorsement of sorts.

Despite the pretty art, I'm still not any more optimistic about Heroes in Crisis than I was last week. But I'm perfectly willing to admit that I'm a hard-to-please blowhard. Maybe it's time to hold a finger to the wind and test which way public opinion is blowing on this thing.
