Judging the Justice Leagues

Justice League, Justice League International, Justice League Dark.... There are a lot of Justice Leagues competing for attention these days. How to tell which one is for you?

While time has yet to tell which of the New 52 DC Justice Leagues is the best, there must be some way to judge those that came before. We at Boosterrific.com tend to judge by comparing the number of Booster Gold appearances between the eras. (Appearances while wearing his high-collared costume count double!)

Starro vs. the Justice League.

Centives.net thinks they have a better, more objective solution for judging between Leagues of years past: comparing League rosters to United States crime rates. While their metric is obviously flawed for not taking Booster Gold into account, I can't really argue with their results. (Thanks to Morgenstern for the link.)

New Releases: Justice League International #1

Before Flashpoint, DC released a Justice League International #1 cover with a brunette in black and yellow tights in the bottom left of the image. During Flashpoint, DC released a Justice League International #1 cover with empty space where the heroine used to be. After Flashpoint, DC released a Justice League International #1 cover with a blonde in white tights in the bottom left of the image. At least I remember all of these changes.

Note that between revisions, Guy Gardner's boot has been correctly recolored. Yet Booster still isn't wearing a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring. Curious.

Of course, DC used both the image with the brunette and the image without during their media blitz for the New 52. Is this latest art even the final cover image for the book? We'll find out as Justice League International #1 hits shelves today. Buy a copy and make Skeets happy.

Justice League International Sells Out

© DC Comics

According to Bleeding Cool, this week's Justice League International #1 has already sold out, and it hasn't even hit stands yet! That means that retailers, expecting whopping sales after Justice League flew off the shelves last week, are expecting boffo demand for the book.

As leader of the team, Booster Gold naturally deserves full credit for this good news. Good job, Booster! Keep up the good work.

New Look Booster Gold

DC released this teaser image of Booster Gold yesterday at The Source.

Putting together yesterday's image of the Phillip-ized Booster Gold had me convinced that Booster's new costume was worse than I had previously realized. Fortunately, seeing Booster in a more conventional DC style is something of a soothing balm for my panic. Somewhat.

More curiously, in the full image, Booster is clearly standing near Plastic Man, Hawk, and Frankenstein's Monster. Is the Justice League International the DCnU's equivalent of television's Justice League Unlimited team where every DC hero is a member? I hate to be an optimist, but this could be good.

Blame Canada

According to Rich Johnson of Bleeding Cool, it was announced at the August 26th Fan Expo Canada "Flashpoint Friday" panel that Booster Gold will be the Canadian member of the upcoming Justice League International.

Let that sink in. A Canadian. Because the first things that come to mind when you think Canada is "selfishness" and "self-promotion."

Blame Canada

Does this change anything significant about Booster's character? No, not really. It's just a little weird to think that Booster Gold, the Capitalist Crusader, will be Canadian in the DCnU, eh.

It's hard to believe that this wasn't just panelists Brian Azzarello, Eddie Berganza, Andy Kubert, Francis Manapul, and James Robinson playing up to the local crowd. We'll find out the truth soon enough: Justice League International #1 is less than 2 weeks away.

UPDATE 08/29/11: Jobu popped into the Boosterrific Forum to note the following.

One of the panelists (I was far back) replied "actually, I think you guys will be thrilled to know that in the DCnU one of heroes will now be Canadian". They batted around "can we tell them?" for a bit and then said it was Booster Gold. The crowd cheered and clapped, but I just assumed it was joke and nothing more.

The next day at the New 52 panel, I was rocking my Booster Gold fan club T-shirt when a question came up about the JLI and Dan DiDio once again said Booster would be Canadian. He said it with a totally straight face and wasn't playing for applause so maybe there's some truth to this rumour?

So they're serious then? Of all the characters to make Canadian... Booster Gold, a hero disgraced playing college football, named by Ronald Reagan, who wears a star on his chest? Thanks for the update, Jobu.
