Who Was That Unmasked Man?

Each issue of Futures End includes a selection of panels teasing events in the next issue. Futures End #2 included an image of a character yet to appear in the story's first three issues. Who could this blond-haired, blue-eyed dreamboat be? Hmm?

MetalWoman suspects that this is Booster Gold. Sure looks like it to me. We'll find out for sure when Futures End #3 hits shelves this Wednesday.

For those of you who are not buying Futures End, MetalWoman has created a thread in the Boosterrific Forum to help keep track of Booster's appearances in the series for you. And if you want to read Futures End #0 but couldn't get a copy from your LCS on Free Comic Book Day, Comixology.com is offering a digital download of the book for free.

New Release: Futures End #1

Did you like Booster's appearance in Futures End #0?

© DC Comics

Let's play point/counter-point!

Chris Sims of ComicsAlliance.com:

"The setup for Future's End [sic], the violent death of all your favorite superheroes, is the same thing that [DC Comics] used for DC Universe Online, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Flashpoint and Earth-2, and that's just the stuff from the last few years that springs to mind. As a company, they seem obsessed with violently murdering their roster of characters in the most gruesome way possible, over and over agian. At this point, it's their trademark."

Russ Burlingame of ComicBook.com:

"It feels like they've created a ton of stuff from scratch here, and while it has the potential to be a trainwreck trying to connect the dots between the DC Universe we know and the one we saw in today's issue, I find it difficult not to have confidence in the steady hands of writers Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen and the aforementioned Dan Jurgens given the huge promise shown here and their combined track record."

Heh. One of them has to be right, right?

If, like Russ, you are excited to read more about far-future Batman's adventures in the near future, Future's End #1 hits shelves today. If, like Chris, you found the experience familiar and nauseating, you can wait another four months for Booster Gold's next announced appearance.

Futures End Starts Tomorrow

Booster Gold makes a cameo appearance in tomorrow's Futures End #0. If you're reluctant to spend money for a meager cameo appearance, here's the good news: it's free.

I've rarely partaken in Free Comic Book Day offerings because retailers are charged for the books, and I feel that the free comics should be used to attract new customers, not line the longboxes of people like me who visit their LCS regularly. LeVar Burton sums up the case for giving free comics to the new kids particularly well:

So I'm sorry to say that this year I'll be disappointing LeVar Burton and stealing a teaching opportunity from a child when I take advantage of the marketing promotion to get my hands on Booster Gold merchandise. I think Booster would want it that way.

(Besides, children shouldn't be exposed to the grim 'n' gritty New 52 anyway. Make 'em wait 'til they're old enough to know better.)
