Naughty or Nice

The winner of last week's poll, 52 Week 15, trounced the competition by a wide margin. I'm sure no one voted for that issue because we saw Booster Gold's corpse, right?

Last week's poll question: What is the best single comic book that features Booster Gold (Boosterrific edition)? (38 votes)

What is the best single comic book that features Booster Gold (Boosterrific edition)?

I have another follow-up poll for this series that I'll run next year. First, let's take the time to properly celebrate the holiday season the traditional way: by thinking about what we want other people to give us.

Booster Gold Versus Ghost of Christmas Past

Yes, the New 52 is selling well by all metrics. But all new issues sell well. A better indication of its relative success is to compare its sales to the past.

Justice League International volume 3 vs Booster Gold volume 2 sales

Graphically, it looks like sales are falling off for Justice League International Volume 3 faster than they did for Booster Gold Volume 2. If all DC's hype has created a larger pool of buyers out there now, this is bad news for the JLI as the audience is turning its back on this series for greener pastures.

On the other hand, this should be expected if the readers of the New 52 are the same old readers who are adjusting their pull lists after buying a few extra books for the past few months. For a better view, take a look at the composite sales graphs for all of the New 52 against one another:

New 52 sales

You can click on that graph to embiggen it, but all it really shows is that the sales trend seen for Justice League International Volume 3 is pretty much the same across the board for the entire New 52. That's a lot of volume with a very familiar sales trend towards entropy across the board. The more you see of the DCnU, the less new it looks.

New Releases: The New 52

This week DC releases the hardcover collection of all 52 first issues of their so-called "New 52" series. This collection will include a reprint of Justice League International, Volume 3, #1, the first appearance of Booster Gold in the DCnU.

If you had bought every issue of the New 52 back in September (and many, many people did), it would have cost you $105. This collection will cost $150. Presumably the collection will include some bonus content as well as hard covers, which means that you won't have to store it in Mylar to keep it pristine on your coffee table. That's got to be worth something, right?

Delicious

At long last, someone has finally sated the need for a Booster Gold appearance in one of those classic Hostess Pie advertisements ubiquitous in Bronze Age comics. Bill Walko recently submitted the following image to Comic Book Resources' "The Line it is Drawn" column as part of its try-out for new regular artists.

Click the image above to go see a better, larger copy of the ad (and other fine works) at Walko's website, The Hero Business. As Skeets would say, "word."

You can also vote for Walko as your favorite in the contest at Comic Book Resources, although you would be advised to take a look at the entries first. There is an image of Booster Gold with Bone and several other teaming Booster with Doctor Who. But don't drag your feet, voting ends Thursday.

International Exchange: JLI #4

Adjust your bookmarks: Russ Burlingame's "International Exchange" column has a new permanent home on comicbook.com. Here's hoping that the new location is a good fit for Burlingame; we need "International Exchange" to last for years to come! Where else are we going to get great Q&A's with Booster's creator like this:

IX: After reading some comments by Morganstern [sic] over at the Boosterrific message boards, I was wondering: Was it a conscious parallel that Peraxxus is basically in this for the money, which in some ways evokes how most people perceive Booster at this early stage in his career?

DJ: I think that's stretching things a bit too far. I don't know that I'd say that Peraxxus is quite so interested in money. Think of this more as his purpose... this is what he does. He provides a service that people need and collects for it.

But it isn't always money. He's a trader.

No matter where you're doing it, Russ, keep up the good work!
