So far as I can tell, time traveler Booster Gold has never appeared in a comic book released on the 11th day of September.

Coincidence? I think not.

As all Booster boosters of a certain age know, when Michael Jon "Booster" Carter first came to the 20th century back in 1985, he started a company he called Goldstar, Inc. in honor of his originally intended alter ego (which he fumbled naming in front of the United States president).

The name "Goldstar" was used a lot in the first year of Booster's adventures, eventually becoming the name of Booster's sidekick. And then, after a trip back to the future, Booster renamed his company "Booster Gold Incorporated" with very little explanation why.

Which is not to say that there wasn't a reason.

The answer lies in Russ Burlingame's exclusive interview with Dan Jurgens in a book I'm sure I haven't mentioned around here yet, The Gold Exchange: The Boosterrific Deluxe Edition:

Burlingame: It's funny. I was talking to someone younger than me, recounting the story of how Booster was originally Goldstar. And I said that I always wondered whether that was because of Goldstar, the electronics manufacturer, and whether you had really made that change, rather than it just being a throwaway gag. But that person was younger than me, so they had no idea what the company was that I was even talking about.

Jurgens: Yes. Yeah, it was, by the way. That's exactly what it was: we were into it, I had done Goldstar, and Booster's sister as well, but ultimately, they said "We've got to work away from this," and it was because there was a company out there called Goldstar, which none of us were aware of when I first started using that name. So I was like, "Okay, we've got to roll with that one too."

So yes, that is 100% true.

To be clear, United States trademark law protects a "word, phrase, or design" that distinguishes a company's goods and services from its competitors' similar goods. Therefore, while it was in Booster's best interest to rename his licensing company to avoid confusion with pre-existing international electronics company GoldStar (which you can tell your kids became part of what is now known as LG Corporation), there's no reason DC can't keep using "Goldstar" as a character name.

Last Sunday, the Fire and Water Podcast Network's JLI Podcast released a new episode in which the Irredeemable Shag interviewed Dan Jurgens and discussed Blue and Gold.

I... haven't listened to all of it yet. I mean, I did hear the part about the sponsor, InStockTrades.com, having the Booster Gold volume 1 hardcover collections on sale for 45% off. (Just in time for Christmas!) That part was pretty good.

But I seriously do have the utmost faith in both Shag and Dan, and I don't think you should have to wait for me to find the time to finish it before I inevitably recommend the episode to Booster boosters everywhere.

Justice League America #56 was released on September 17, 1991, thirty years ago next week. Its mawkish story takes place in the middle of the too-long "Breakdowns" event marking the denouement of the United Nations-sponsored Justice League International era.

This chapter focuses on the forsaken Leaguers struggling to adapt to life without a league. Among them, Fire and Ice struggle to join a modeling agency, and Blue Beetle finds that his poor physical health will prevent him from joining the Booster Gold-led Conglomerate. There aren't a lot of "bwah-ha-ha" moments here.

No matter how you look at it, "Breakdowns" was not a particularly good story, and this wasn't a particularly good issue. As much as we want them to be, not all comics can be masterpieces.

But this comic book is worth a look back today if for no other reason than for its cover by Chris Sprouse and Bruce D. Patterson. As pretty as it was at the time, it was made more poignant by events that transpired almost exactly ten years after the issue's publication.

The-trades.com has posted an interview between R.J. Carter and Eric Martsolf, the actor playing Booster Gold on Smallville this Friday.

TT: Can you tell us how you went about becoming the character of Booster Gold?

MARTSOLF: It's funny, when I first started reading the script, he came across to me as sort of a Ron Burgundy from "Anchorman" -- just this ultra-comedic confidence man, and it was very questionable as to whether he had it all together or not. I wasn't sure whether this guy was all style and no substance.

You know, I never would have thought to compare Booster Gold to Ron Burgundy. I'm not saying the comparison can't be made, I'm just saying that it wouldn't have occurred to me to make it.
