New Release: DC Power 2024

Good news, Booster boosters! Booster Gold does appear in a DC Comic this week. Can you guess which one?

Hint: it's not the concluding issue of the DC Universe-spanning Titans Beast World event mini-series. Nor, despite having shown up in recent issues of the regular series, is he in the Batman/Superman: World's Finest 2024 Annual.

Nope, Booster Gold's appearance is in the one-shot DC Power 2024, a anthology of ten stories that, as the cover blurb explains, celebrates "Black excellence across the DCU" timed to coincide with the start of Black History Month.

To be fair to white-bread Booster, he isn't exactly crashing the Black Power party. In the entire issue, he's only seen in the above one-panel flashback to Bloodwynd's first appearance in Justice League America #61, which did, indeed, prominently feature Booster Gold. So at least it's an historically accurate cameo appearance.

As I've said many times before, I love DC's current strategy of holiday-themed anthologies because they give us readers the opportunity revisit the oft-overlooked, lesser known characters of the DC Universe like Bloodwynd. And, this time, to a much lesser extent, Booster Gold. Hooray!

Despite Booster only having a very small cameo appearance, consider buying this issue and making Skeets happy.

New Release: World's Finest 23

Late Monday night I received the following email from Booster booster Rob Snow:

Booster sighting! Kinda! We see the back of his head in one panel of the latest World's Finest

Sadly, I have not yet managed to make it to my Local Comic Shop to pick up a copy, but I imagine the panel looks something like this:

Ow! Batman!

The only way to know for sure is to go buy Batman/Superman: World's Finest #23 and make Skeets happy.

New Release: Speed Force 3

Let me just turn today's post over to Jake, who emails:

I don't keep up with this series (nor was I, in truth, completely aware of its existence), but I am now. Speed Force #3 has Booster Gold back in business, as pictured. I want that cup!

© DC Comics

You say you haven't been reading this series, Jake, so you may not be aware that the price of "that cup" is probably your autonomy, as the evil backers of the Symphonee music app are planning to take over the minds of the gullible youths who listen to their music.

(Incidentally, this is exactly the plot of the 2001 Josie and the Pussycats movie, which I can whole-heartedly recommend.)

Is Booster Gold unaware of Symphonee's evil plans? Has our hero been mind-controlled like some of the Teen Titans, or is he simply being an opportunistic shill hoping to ride the coattails of whatever the popular app of the moment is (not unlike how celebrity influencers promoted NFTs in 2021)?

Given that Booster's cup is the McGuffin that motivates Roundhouse to attend Symphonee's upcoming music festival, will we be seeing more Booster in future issues of this mini-series? Let's hope so.

In the meantime, buy Speed Force #3 and make Skeets happy.

Thanks for the pic, Jake.

New Release: Fire and Ice 5

As Booster booster Rob Snow alerted me, after months of Booster Gold references, we actually get to see our hero on panel in this weeks' Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville #5!

© DC Comics

Is it just me, or is it starting to feel like none of the New 52 continuity applies anymore? I feel like I opened a comic book to find Bobby Ewing taking a shower. (If you don't get that reference, kids, you're on the wrong website. Your homework is to go watch something from back when television was good, specifically the 1985 Dallas season 9 episode, "Blast from the Past.")

The events of this series have some really weird, life-threatening things happening, things that it would seem would not go unnoticed by a particular Man of Steel. Things like several gristly murders and much destruction of property. Makes me wonder why the story's setting is Smallville and not a suburb of Gotham, where these sorts of things wouldn't attract so much attention amidst the psycho clowns and sewer-dwelling crocodile-men.

The solicitation text for next month's mini-series final issue teases "the fate of Smallville itself hangs in the balance!" After reading issue 5, I can believe it.

Buy this issue and make Skeets happy.

New Release: World's Finest 22

It shouldn't be a surprise that Booster Gold is in this week's Batman/Superman: World's Finest #22. After all, he was on the last page of last month's issue.

So you might expect to see him sooner in this issue. And we do.

This time, he's on the next to last page.

That's three issues of Batman/Superman: World's Finest in a row with very, very brief Booster Gold cameo appearances. How long can they keep this streak going? I guess we'll find out next month.
