What We Learned This Weekend

Three things overheard this weekend at Comic-Con International 2012:

1. Screenwriter Andrew Kreiseberg on the progress of the Booster Gold television show being developed by SyFy (as interviewed by IGN.com):

"[I'm] handing in the script next month. It was actually pretty cool because I got to meet Dan Jurgens who created the comic book last night, and I spent about a half an hour convincing him that I wasn't just some gun for hire, that I was actually a huge fan of Booster as a kid. I wrote a couple of episodes of the Justice League animated series and when they asked me who I wanted to write, I said 'Booster'. So I've been a life-long Booster fan."

2. DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns discussing the Justice League International Annual at the "DC Comics: Justice League and Green Lantern" panel (according to Newsarma.com):

"It's really a Booster Gold story."

3. DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio elaborating on what to expect in the Justice League International Annual at the "DC Comics: Meet the Publishers" panel (according to Comicbook.com):

We wrapped up some stories, especially Booster Gold's, where we see some strange things happen to Booster, Blue Beetle, and the August General."

Thanks to MetalWoman and Russ Burlingame for the tips.

Why Friday the 13th is Scary

Booster Gold by CoolGuyErrant

Aaah! It's Booster's evil twin from the Power Posse (as seen in JLA Classified #8)! But, no, this "cosplay" posted on the tumblr blog of Cool Guy Errant isn't what makes today so scary. No, that honor goes to the news that one of today's DC Comics panels at Comic-Con International will be devoted to a love-fest for the New 52. *shudder*

4:15-5:15 DC Comics-The New 52— DC Comics-The New 52 and The New 52 Wave 2 are the industry's most talked about industry-shattering events. Although the landscape has changed, we're not done making news! Be a part of history as panelists discuss what's coming next in this exciting time for DC Entertainment.

With both Dan Jurgens and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns on today's panel, maybe we might finally learn what Booster will be up to after Justice League International. Keep your fingers crossed, Boosterphiles!

Old News Is Good News

Over the holiday weekend, CDN took me to task for not reporting something here on the Boosterrific Blog back in April. Specifically, I failed to forward the news that so far as Geoff Johns is concerned, Booster Gold is "always a Time Master."

As I explained in my apology to CDN, that bit of news came out the same weekend as the announcement that SyFy got their hands on a Booster Gold pilot script. As a result, what Geoff Johns said at the 2012 Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (aka "C2E2") managed to fall off the front page of the blog. Readers of Russ Burlingame's reporting at Comicbook.com were aware of this news, but I failed to pass it along here at Boosterrific.com.

Good news like that shouldn't fall through the cracks. Sorry, CDN.

And while I'm on the subject of old news, perhaps I should pass along a link to Adam WarRock and Mikal kHill performing the song "Booster Gold" that has been posted on YouTube. (Beware, the song contains "explicit lyrics" and is not work safe, which is why I don't embed it here directly.) WarRock released the song and its album, You Dare Call That Thing Human?!?, a few months back, and both are still very much available for download from adamwarrock.bandcamp.com. (The song costs just for just $1 to download!) We shouldn't stop supporting songs about Booster Gold just because they're a few months old. Thanks to Moregenstern for that link.

Where would I be without you Booster-philes?

Welcome Home, Geoff Johns

On Friday, DC announced via their blog that Justice League International Annual #1 will be shipping August 29, 2012. DC promises that "the ramifications of this [issue] will be felt across the board," but the best part of this news is that Geoff Johns will be co-writing the book.

© DC Comics

Johns is probably on-board for this one-shot because the issue will tie-in with his regular gig as writer of Justice League (issue #12, specifically). For his part, co-writer DiDio is probably on-board to tie-off some loose ends dangling from the his recently-canceled gig as writer of OMAC. Fans of either series should be excited about the crossover potential here, especially since Johns and DiDio are Chief Creative Officer and Co-Publisher of DC Comics, respectively, and therefore are in a position to see that what happens in their issue of JLI is relevant to events throughout the company.

If the solicitation cover is any indication, it looks like the first thing that the powerful pair has done is ensure that Booster Gold no longer has any gold on his cowl. That's already a change for the better.

Who's the Man?

If you change Booster Gold to make him popular, isn't the newly popular character no longer Booster Gold? At least, that's what decades of tween-friendly Disney movies have been preaching to me.

Last week's poll question: Would you rather that Booster Gold remain an obscure character with his current personality and powers intact, or that Booster Gold gain more mass appeal even if it meant changing the character? (41 votes)

Would you rather that Booster Gold remain an obscure character with his current personality and powers intact, or that Booster Gold gain more mass appeal even if it meant changing the character?

As webmaster here at Boosterrific.com, I'm of the opinion that there are three main camps of Booster Gold fans. The first group is most loyal to the work of character creator Dan Jurgens. Jurgens' work tends towards the serious, if somewhat routine and unspectacular aspects of heroics. His characters and adventures are believable and grounded, using naturalism to create the belief that his heroes could be living in a real world.

The second group came to the character as fans of the original Justice League International, and therefore are attached to the outlandish situational humor of Keith Giffen. Alongside his partner J.M. DeMatteis -- who provided the dialogue to Giffen's adventures -- Giffen built Booster Gold from a competent solo hero to a team leader. Not surprisingly, fans in this group tend to be vocally supportive of Booster's partner in crime, Ted Kord.

And the third major group of Booster fans were brought in as disciples of Geoff Johns. Johns' dialogue is witty and his tendency towards melodrama is perfectly suited for writing adventure stories full of heroics and sacrifice. Johns' stories and characters are larger than life, and his heroes are legendary myths.
