Very Old Release: Captain Atom 10

Booster booster José got in touch to tell Boosterrific of a hole in our collection of Booster Gold comics. Somehow, we missed Booster Gold's appearance in 1987's Captain Atom #10. That's a 30-year-old oversight!

© DC Comics

In our defense, Booster doesn't actually appear in the issue. What you see above is a static image of Booster (and his teammates) being reviewed on a video monitor inside the Pentagon as they discuss Captain Atom's recent addition to the United Nations-sanctioned Justice League International.

Elsewhere in the issue, news reports (and a helpful editorial box) peg the events of this issue as taking place simultaneously with those seen in Justice League International #8. So while the United States military was worrying about Booster's anti-American activities, we know our hero was busy in Paris hitting on (and being shot down by) Catherine Cobert, the administrative head of the local JLI Embassy. It's a small DC Universe!

Thanks for the spot, José. Follow his lead, Boosterphiles; if you see Booster somewhere and you don't think Boosterrific knows it, you can always drop a tip via the site's Contact form.

Jingle Jingle

Way back in February, The Blot alerted us that Kidrobot was planning to release a "Booster Gold" Dunny keychain. Well, The Blot has reported back to say that they're now available, just in time for Christmas shopping.

Booster Gold Justice League Dunny Keychain from Kid Robot

From Kidrobot.com:

In time for the new Justice League movie, Kidrobot and DC Comics have teamed up again to shrink the Dunny down to small crime fighting size. Featuring all of the DC Universe's most iconic heroes and clocking in at 1.5" tall, these DC Dunnys are ready to stop villains in their tracks. Coming with a lobster clasp on a detachable ring, this Justice League adds a heroic accent to backpacks, purses, keys and zippers. Nab them all today and keep the villains of the DC universe at bay!

The entire lineup of 14 figures includes Modern Batman, Classic "New Look" Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle (Jaime), Animal Man, and Zatanna.

Kidrobot is selling them for $5.99 each, but sadly, they are packaged in "blind boxes," meaning you can't know which one you're going to get when you order just one. To be sure you get a Booster Gold, you'll have to order a whole display of 24 blind boxes. Or, you know, go to eBay.

Thanks, Blot!

New Release: Action Comics 992

DC is being generous to Booster Gold fans in 2018. The company released February solicitation earlier this week, and it looks like the "Booster Shot" story teaming Superman and Booster Gold in Action Comics will be running for at least three more months. Via Newsarama.com):

"BOOSTER SHOT" part six! Escape from Planet Zod! Superman and Booster Gold must escape to travel back to the present, where the life of the captured Sam Lane hangs in the balance! On sale FEBRUARY 28 • $2.99 US

(Point of grammar: "Zod" is his name, not his title. Therefore, if there are multiple Zods, they should be pluralized as such. Unless maybe they follow different rules of grammar on Krypton. Dictators do whatever they want to.)

I admit, six issues of "Booster Shot" is much more than I thought we would get, especially in the run up to the big Action Comics #1000. Russ Burlingame recently interviewed Dan Jurgens for ComicBook.com, and he got the story why Booster is getting such a spotlight:

"[Geoff Johns and I] had plotted out the end of the Oz storyline and wanted to do a couple of things after that," at the start of the Rebirth era, Jurgens told ComicBook.com. "One of which was 'The Oz Effect.' It's pretty heavy stuff. We wanted to lighten it up a bit and at the same time have it be a logical progression from Oz to this. So, bringing Booster into it was going to accomplish both goals and so far it's working out quite well."

"Booster Shot" sure sounds like a story everyone should be reading. And it's starting early.

Today's issue of Action Comics #992, though not technically part of the "Booster Shot" storyline, concludes with a tease of the Booster Gold story to come. So take note, Booster boosters. If you want in on the ground floor of "Booster Shot," hustle to your Local Comic Shop before indulging in tomorrow's turkey feast!

(Thanks to SuperPat for that tip.)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving, everybody.

Found In Space

Last Monday, I guessed that Francis Manapul was teasing his cover for the upcoming Action Comics issues featuring Booster Gold. This weekend, he proved me right.

Said Manapul on Instagram: "I'm taking over the variant cover art duties for #ActionComics and I couldn't be more excited! Here's the first cover of my run, #Superman along with time travelling #BoosterGold"

© DC Comics

Presumably, that's the alternate cover for Action Comics #993, due December 13. DC has already released an image by Dan Jurgens presumed to be the standard cover. Neil Edwards and Jay Leistin were originally announced as the variant cover artists; I assume at this point that was an error.

(A quick note for new collectors about DC's "variant" covers. Traditionally, "variant" covers have been used as retailer incentives: "for every 2 of cover A, you can purchase 1 cover B," etc. This led to cover B being more expensive than cover A because retailers passed along the cost of acquisition. However, these days DC offers each issue in two covers to be ordered independently by retailers. Since the two covers exist in equal numbers, it's entirely arbitrary which is the "variant" as in practice they are both "regular" covers. So buy the one you like, or both, as neither inherently has more value or is rarer than the other.)
