For the third week in a row, DC is releasing a trade compilation reprinting old Booster Gold appearances. This week it is The Death of Superman, which contains Booster's dismantling by Doomsday as originally seen in Justice League America #69 and Superman, Volume 2, #74.

To give readers who have read this, the most read story in the history of comic books, a reason to read it again, DC is promoting this reprint as "a newly recolored edition." I don't know how much weight that adds to your decision whether to re-purchase this classic story by Dan Jurgens and company, but if you were looking for an excuse, there you go.

I should mention that also out today is Justice League of America #1. It was once strongly implied that this series was where we would eventually see Booster Gold return, so keep your eyes peeled if you drop by your Local Comic Shop this week if you want to get in on the ground floor. (Just don't expect to see Booster in issue #1.) This ridiculous thing has 53 covers that retailers were allowed to order individually, so it shouldn't be too hard to spot.

Fans of the 1990s rejoice! Dan Jurgens returns to writing Superman with issue #7 hitting stands today. For the entire decade, Jurgens either wrote or drew that series. It's good to have him back at the reigns, making the DCnU a little more familiar (even if Superman is still wearing that stupid armor).

Dan Jurgens' greatest creation, Booster Gold, also will appear in a book released today. Booster's cameo appearance in Justice League of America #47 is included the issues collected in Justice League of America: Dark Things. Despite its name, this collection also collects 2 issues of JSA and is chock full of characters that have yet to appear in the DCnU.

Skeets may still be unhappy not to appear in the DCnU, but there will be complain if you decide to support Dan Jurgens. (Making Dan Jurgens happy is the surest way to get Skeets back on panel.)

February 29 is Superman's birthday. Naturally, anything that is good for Superman is anathema to Booster Gold, so it should come as no surprise that Booster has never appeared in a comic released on February 29. And after today, he still might not have.

DC released preview art for DC Universe Online Legends #24 last week on The Source that mentions -- but does not show -- our hero. It also implies that we will not be seeing our hero... ever again. (At least in the alternate continuity of the DCU Online video game.)

So does Booster finally get his Leap Year on or not? Buy this issue and let Skeets know if he should start collecting unemployment.

Morgenstern, who at this point is probably responsible for more content on this blog than I am, notified me over the weekend that Booster Gold appears in a new YouTube video by Hollywood screenwriter Max Landis. Landis is the son of Hollywood legend John Landis and writer of this past weekend's big-budget Chronicle. Apparently, he is still really angry about the conclusion to the Reign of the Supermen story, so he does what everyone of his generation does: complain about it on the internet.

I disagree about his assessment of the effect of the Death of Superman on the history of comic books -- returning from death was old hat before DC hyped it to the moon -- but I applaud the fact that Landis does give Booster Gold full credit for naming Doomsday. If you don't mind a little foul language and can stomach a drastic evisceration of a high-point of 1990s DC stories in the name of comedy, it's worth your time to watch it. If only to see the only live-action Bloodwynd you're ever likely to see, ever.

Regular Boosterrific.com visitors will know the name Russ Burlingame, as he is both a frequent site visitor himself and the web's foremost Booster Gold reporter. (After all of his news stories about Booster Gold, we'd have to suspect that Burlingame might be hiding an alter ego if Booster's public identity wasn't already well-known.) However, in his latest coverage of DC's announcement that Dan Jurgens will be taking over the reigns of Superman, Burlingame's single-minded adoration of Booster Gold seems to be warping his point-of-view:

As the creator of the character Booster Gold in the 1980s, Jurgens was approached to pencil the book when it was relaunched with superstar writer Geoff Johns and film executive Jeff Katz a few years ago; four years on, he spent the better part of the comic's 49 monthly issues drawing and later writing the adventures of a Booster Gold that was both a natural extension of the one he had written twenty years previous, and radically different in his personality and the storytelling approach to anything Jurgens had written in the series' first incarnation.... The result, most fans and critics agree, was a Booster Gold who came out stronger and more interesting than he had ever been. Can he do it again with the most storied character in all of comics?

Is Burlingame really asking Dan Jurgens if he can turn Superman into a star as big as Booster Gold? That's a pretty tall order.
