Coming Soon: Blue and Gold 2

DC's August solicitations are out this week, and we've gotten our first glimpse at Blue and Gold issue 2:

© DC Comics

BLUE AND GOLD #2
story by DAN JURGENS
art & cover by RYAN SOOK
ON SALE August 17 · $3.99 US

Who needs the Justice League anyway? Our heroes certainly don't! After a painful rejection from the DC Universe's team of a-list heroes, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle strike out on their own. Thanks to the Kord Industries fortune, anything is possible for this dynamic duo...right? Little do they know, an alien assassin seeking revenge places Blue and Gold in her crosshairs, and The Omnizon never misses!

The only bad news is that it looks like this is probably the only place we'll be seeing Booster Gold in August. (I think he'll be showing up — very briefly — in a Birds of Prey collection solicited for late September, but that's four months away. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.)

You can see all the solicitations yourself at GamesRadar.com/Newsarama.

Do They Even Make Comics Anymore?

GamesRadar.com has the list of DC's June 2021 solicitations... and it seems slim. Counting reprint collections and hard covers, it looks like DC is planning to release only 73 total books in the entire month. (Eighteen of those — nearly 25% — have "Batman" or "Detective Comics" in their title.)

So setting aside previously announced trades (we're currently still expecting a Superman reprint collection in June), the bad news for Booster Gold is that there is no sign of our hero in the solicitations through the end of spring. Has our hero gone AWOL? What will we read in the meantime?

Also missing is Dan Jurgens, who hasn't had his name publicly attached to anything at DC since the cover to Infinite Frontier. (He's drawing the Heroes Reborn: Marvel Double Action due in June for Marvel.) Since Booster historically is most likely to show up in Jurgens' work, this bodes ill for our hero in the short-term future at least.

Bated Breath

DC released solicitations for May 2021 at the tail end of last week, and there's not much in there to excite Booster boosters.

The only overt mention of Booster Gold (and Dan Jurgens) is this one:

DC COMICS: GENERATIONS HC
written by DAN JURGENS, ANDY SCHMIDT, and ROBERT VENDITTI
art by IVAN REIS, BRYAN HITCH, YANICK PAQUETTE, JOHN ROMITA JR., KEVIN NOWLAN, DOUG BRAITHWAITE, RAGS MORALES, EMANUELA LUPACCINO, and others
cover by IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO
ON SALE June 8, 2021
$29.99 US · 184 PAGES
ISBN: 978-1-77951-009-9

In these tales, a threat of cosmic proportions to DC's newest (and oldest) universe compels one of the most unusual groups of heroes ever assembled to take on the most mysterious foe they have ever encountered. Join the original Batman, Kamandi, Starfire, Sinestro, Booster Gold, Dr. Light, Steel, and Sinestro in their quest to save the universe before time runs out...
Collects
Generations Shattered #1, Generations Forged #1, and the story "Generations Fractured" from Detective Comics #1027.

Of course, by June, we'll all have read everything in that.

We've also already seen all of Booster's appearances in the solicited Tales from the DC Dark Multiverse II hardcover collection (also due on June 8), which will reprint Booster's participation in Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Wonder Woman: War of the Gods #1 (and the very tiny cameo from Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint #1).

(And while we're here, I should probably add that the solicitations also omit any hint about the future of Gold Beetle, who goes unmentioned in the tease for Flash #770.)

So where will Booster be seen next? Your guess is as good as mine.

A full list of solicitations can be found at CBR.com.

You Got Your Chocolate in My Peanut Butter

Last week, we considered the question:

Who is... Gold Beetle in Future State?

Thanks to GamesRadar.com, we now have the beginning of an answer. As we suspected, she very much looks to have something to do with Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. Perhaps their great-great-great-something granddaughter? (The 30th century is very far away.)

THE FLASH #769
written by JEREMY ADAMS
art by DAVID LaFUENTE
and BRANDON PETERSON
cover by BRANDON PETERSON
card stock variant cover by ZI XU
After an accident pushes Wally West into the time stream, the former Kid Flash lands in the body of his onetime partner, Impulse. Now sprinting through the 30th century side by side with the mysterious (and, yeah, ridiculous) Gold Beetle, Wally must uncover what's causing the destructive explosions that keep propelling him through time and the bodies of other speedsters.
On sale April 20, $3.99 US
CARD STOCK VARIANT COVER $4.99 US

So now we know that Gold Beetle won't be appearing until *after* Future State runs its two-month course. Unless she gets a cameo appearance at the end of Future State: The Flash #2, which I suppose we'll know when that issue is released on February 2.

The Undiscovered Country

The Internet buzz this weekend was all about DC's post-Future State solicitations coming this March. It looks like we're down to 20 titles in its shared DC Universe, which is a far cry from 52. But maybe less is more. DC certainly wants us to think so.

Anyway, the big news for Booster Gold fans is that our hero is featured on the cover of DC's tentpole March title: Infinite Frontier #0.

cover art by Dan Jurgens and Mikel Janin

Isn't that cover a beaut? (Thanks to Rob for making sure I saw it.)

HollywoodReporter.com confirms that Infinite Frontier is a one-shot, but most of the characters on its cover appear in one or more of the 19 other titles in the publisher's solicitations on GamesRadar.com. Conspicuously absent is any hint of where we might next see Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. (There are several reprint collections that will include Booster cameos — more on those later — but nothing new.)

Will Infinite Frontier be Blue and Gold's only appearance in this new DC Universe? (DC doesn't want to call it a reboot, but if it talks like a reboot....) Has their comic not yet been announced? Will they be playing a supporting role in someone else's comic? Or are they on that cover just because Dan Jurgens drew it?

Come to think of it, Jurgens' name isn't mentioned anywhere else in the solicitations, either. Batman Beyond was canceled, and Nightwing has been passed to the very capable hands of Tom Taylor. So what will Jurgens be up to? So far, mum's the word.

I hate to speculate about such things, but it sure would be nice to see Jurgens working on Booster Gold full time again.
