DC would have us believe that following the Convergence break Batman will be dead again. If this sounds like an overused cliche, perhaps that's because it is. It was only five years ago today that Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #2 saw Booster Gold join DC's best-selling heroes on a trip through time in search of the caped crusader.

The Time Masters played almost no role in recovering Bruce Wayne then, and they are very unlikely to show up around Gotham this time either. Rip Hunter is too busy memorizing his lines for his upcoming television series, DC's Legends of Tomorrow (a weird name for a show whose newest character first saw print nearly 40 years ago).

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Newsarama.com got the first look at the upcoming Convergence: Booster Gold #1. And the revelations just keep coming.

New 52 has no idea who Rip Hunter is. That seems to make it pretty clear that there are no Time Masters in the New 52 continuity. One more reason to hope it doesn't survive Convergence.

What else will we see when we get our hands on the full issue of Convergence: Booster Gold #1 this Wednesday? I'm pulling for a meeting between New 52 Skeets and post-52 Skeets. (IhopeIhopeIhope!)

The time-traveling "Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm" has been cast for the Arrow/Flash spin-off on the CW. News broke yesterday that Arthur Darvill (known to all time-travel fans as Rory on Doctor Who) will be playing Rip Hunter.

Whether this news makes you happy or sad that it won't be Booster Gold in the upcoming series, you have to admit that The Boy Who Waited is imminently qualified for the part (assuming he can speak in an American accent).

TVLine.com has reported a casting call for the upcoming Arrow/Flash spin-off. Included in the list of "mystery" characters is the description of someone who might be familiar to Boosterrific visitors:

"THE TRAVELER" : Described as a Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances.

TVLine (and just about everyone else on the Internet, including our pal Russ Burlingame) thinks this is most likely Rip Hunter. Of course, The DC Universe has no shortage of time travelers, so it could just as easily be Waverider or the Time Trapper or Valor. But it just might be Booster Gold.

For almost 20 years, DC Comics has been struggling with the success of Kingdom Come. While the events of that series have now been shuffled off to an alternate Earth (thank you, return of the Multiverse!), for awhile it appeared that Kingdom Come represented the future of the regular DCU. The 1998 mini-series event, The Kindgom, changed that.

The Kingdom followed a band of heroes from the future as they traveled back in time to prevent the events of Kingdom Come. Frankly, its stories were not very good, perhaps doomed by their inevitable comparison to Kingdom Come itself. Though most remember The Kingdom for its introduction of Hypertime, there's a better reason for Booster Gold fans to remember it: Planet Krypton.

The late 90s were a fallow period for the Corporate Crusader, and in this issue he returned to his roots as an up-an-coming businessman. Semi-retired from super-heroics, he's working to make a theme-restaurant celebrating Justice League memorabilia, Planet Krypton, a success. It's quintessential Booster Gold, supported by a healthy dose of writer Mark Waid's extensive knowledge of DC Universe history.

(Footnote: Despite Booster's best plans, Planet Krypton wouldn't last long. But then, it wasn't designed to. It turns out that Booster had a silent partner, someone named Rip Hunter, who had the restaurant built because it was centered on a unique position between timelines. It'd be another seven years before Booster and Rip Hunter teamed up again in the pages of 52.)

Planet Krypton is mostly concerned with the angst of a runaway bride named Rose and a tangential relationship with the "bigger" Kingdom storyline, but Booster Gold is the star here, a bright spot amid the rest of The Kingdom's muddled drek.
