My Favorite Pages: Justice League America 63

My Favorite Pages

Look, I'm getting old. I know it. And because I'm old, I sometimes get nostalgic for giant shoulder pads, Marlboro cigarette ads in print magazines, and giant overblown hairstyles on dudes. And boy, does this page from Justice League America #63 hit that sweet spot!

Looking back on this 1992 issue from the distant future of 2025, I'm struck by just how of its era it really was. Way too much arguing about interpersonal relations (which was all the rage in the best-selling X-Men comics of its day) and the wisdom of military interventionism (a la "Operation Desert Storm" in Kuwait that brought with it heated discussions of a new draft).

Cap it all off with Fire's new very 90's — dare I say "extreme"? — costume. Chef's kiss!

Bea sewed a whole new costume in just 6 pages? Now that's a super power!

You Go, Girls!

I'm typing this at 12:20 AM, and it's possible, likely even, that by the time you read this, DC will have released their full list of solicitations for April. Judging by the news DC has been peddling for the past week, I don't expect to see Booster Gold anywhere in there.

However, DCComics.com has already announced that there is a new Fire and Ice: When Hell Freezes Over mini-series coming from the pen of Joanne Starer, who also wrote 2023's Fire and Ice: Welcome to Smallville. I am on record as being somewhat lukewarm on that series, but although DC has refused to give any sales numbers for any of its titles since 2020, I think we can say that series must have sold a very healthy amount of comics if DC is already making six more.

Compare that to the Blue and Gold mini-series of 2021 which did so well that not only was there no follow-up, DC has now excommunicated Booster Gold from the DC Universe and made sure Ted Kord has forgotten his best friend ever existed. Ouch.

UPDATE: As expected, solicitations are up at AIPTcomic.com, and no sign of Booster Gold. Keep your eyes on DC All In/Absolute Universe 2025 FCBD Special Edition #1 coming May 3, because that story at least provides the opportunity for a Booster mention before DC rolls into its "Summer of Superman."

My Favorite Pages: Superman Annual 3

My Favorite Pages

The Armageddon 2001 storyline ran through the DC annuals in 1991 as Waverider took peeks into potential futures for the heroes of the DCU in search of the one who would become the evil dictator Monarch.

It was Superman's turn in Superman Annual #3, where an increasingly tyrannical Man of Tomorrow is opposed by the freedom-loving Justice League International (with predictable results).

I also really like pages 38 and 44, but neither of those pages manages to work in quite so much delicious cheesecake.

My Favorite Pages: Justice League America 31

My Favorite Pages

Justice League America #31 introduces Adam Hughes as the series' new penciller, and like any human being with functioning eyes, I think his work is amazing. Which is why I can't choose just one favorite page. Here are two!

I'd say the JLI has rarely looked better.

My Favorite Pages: Justice League Intl 23

My Favorite Pages

The Invasion! crossovers continue in Justice League International #23, in which the League finds themselves tasked with disarming potentially deadly alien technology in the South Pacific. Granted, it's not a glamorous job, but somebody's got to do it.

And it does give Booster Gold a chance at a well-earned beach vacation.

I love this page mostly for the single panel of Booster making sandcastles, but I also find it interesting to be reminded that in the early years, Fire couldn't fly. Although it will still be several issues before she will "green flame on" on-panel (in Justice League America #28), the trigger for that power upgrade occurs in this very issue.
