Jurgens on JLI #6

Josie Campbell of Comic Book Resources interviewed Dan Jurgens last week about his plans for the future of the Justice League International. Perhaps more interesting than the future is the still-muddled past of familiar DC characters in the unfamiliar DCnU.

CBR: In terms of what's next for the team, you already dealt with one big, planet-destroying menace in Peraxxus in the very first arc. As a writer, where do you go from there? How do you top a guy who nearly destroys the Earth?

DAN JURGENS: I think since the first arc was very much, for lack of a better term, plot-oriented or adventure oriented, I think what we want to do now is something that is more character oriented. Sort of like your question about Guy and Batman -- why are they there? Obviously we saw how everybody was brought together and were really thrown into the deep end right away without having any real knowledge of how they function together. Booster kind of knew Fire, he kind of knew Guy; the idea is that they had met previously but certainly had not worked as a team previously. If you've never done that, why are you going to continue to hang out with these strangers? So the more character-driven aspect of it where they ask themselves these questions becomes much more part of where we're going from here, and we see some of those things dealt with in issue #6, which comes out [next] month, and then really kicks off with #7.

"Booster kind of knew Fire"? Prior to Flashpoint, Booster Gold and Fire had shared panels in over 140 different comic stories over the past 24 years. According to Jurgens' response, most of those co-starring appearances are no longer part of DC's history. Should readers be sad to see the relationship erased or excited to see it starting over?

You can find the full interview here. (Thanks to Morgenstern for pointing out this interview.)

International Exchange: JLI #5

Russell Burlingame's latest "International Exchange" column ran yesterday morning on comicbook.com. Burlingame and Jurgens are really developing a rapport after all these years: this month's column is the most entertaining, most informative one yet. You know it's going to be good when Burlingame goes straight for the jugular:

International Exchange: I'll start with the hard, and obvious, question: Who's that girl on the far right side of the cover? It doesn't look like Lady Godiva.

Dan Jurgens: There's a very good answer for that.

It's a mistake. A screw up.

She shouldn't be there as she wasn't yet due to appear in the book. Given the amount of people who look at these things, I have no idea how it ever made it all the way through to print.

Note that Jurgens says the mysterious Woman in Black wasn't "yet" in the book. So when will we be discovering the true identity of this woman who is not Godiva, Wonder Woman, or Donna Troy? Inquiring minds want to know.

Don't Panic

This time, I'm warning you in advance: beginning today and continuing for the next week, there will be server maintenance behind the scenes at Boosterrific.com. This will eventually result in a server relocation which will require some down time for the site. Hopefully, the outages will be brief and limited in number.

In the meantime, if you should come to Boosterrific.com and find that you cannot get your fix of Booster Gold, take a trip over to iFanboy.com and read Jeff Reid's summary of Booster's publication history.

Or perhaps you feel you are missing out on your Dan Jurgens news? Try clicking over to Comic Book Movie.com and read nailbiter111's interview with Dan Jurgens.

Sure neither site is Boosterrific.com, but we'll all just have to make due in these trying times.

International Exchange: JLI #4

Adjust your bookmarks: Russ Burlingame's "International Exchange" column has a new permanent home on comicbook.com. Here's hoping that the new location is a good fit for Burlingame; we need "International Exchange" to last for years to come! Where else are we going to get great Q&A's with Booster's creator like this:

IX: After reading some comments by Morganstern [sic] over at the Boosterrific message boards, I was wondering: Was it a conscious parallel that Peraxxus is basically in this for the money, which in some ways evokes how most people perceive Booster at this early stage in his career?

DJ: I think that's stretching things a bit too far. I don't know that I'd say that Peraxxus is quite so interested in money. Think of this more as his purpose... this is what he does. He provides a service that people need and collects for it.

But it isn't always money. He's a trader.

No matter where you're doing it, Russ, keep up the good work!

Gold Exchange: Jurgens on TV

If you want news about Dan Jurgens, Russ Burlingame is the journalist to get it for you. Last week, he posted Jurgens' immediate reaction to the news that Booster Gold may be headed to SyFy on ComicBook.com:

ComicBook.com: The description given to The Hollywood Reporter feels a bit more like the original Booster Gold run, playing down the time travel aspect outside of just the origin story and playing up the "saving today to ensure a better tomorrow" part. You've been pretty heavily invested in both volumes; what take would you run with if you had to submit a pilot script to Syfy?

DJ: For a general audience, the pattern of Booster Gold Volume One probably fits best. The book that Geoff Johns, Jeff Katz and I did was a little more "inside baseball", if you will, keying on cool moments in DC's history. Plus, when you look at Booster's original concept, which is being both hero and fame whore, well, I think that seems even more tuned in with our world today than it did when I first created him. I think that tanslates quite well to TV.

Geoff picked up on much of that with his script to Smallville— dancing girls in every episode!

Seems to me there's a great deal there to work with.

If it's good enough for Booster's creator, it should be good enough for the rest of us!
