The Booster Gold Nobody Knows

The big Booster Gold news from Comic-Con International is that there is no Booster Gold slated to appear in DC Comics.

Booster was discussed at the "DC All-Access Panel" on Thursday. (Panelists included Mark Buckingham, Brian Buccellato, Derek Fridolfs, Adam Hughes, Geoff Johns, Jeff Lemire, Gail Simone, and Tom Taylor.) It's interesting to see how different sources covered the same news.

First up is Zac Boone of Unleash the Fanboy:

A Booster Gold cos-player asked when he will get his title back. Answers were noncommital.

Andy Hunsacker of Crave Online expands:

A Booster Gold cosplayer asks when Booster Gold's getting his book back. They joke that he's from the future, he should already know.

The same event covered by Mark Seifert for Bleeding Cool:

When asked about the rumoured Booster Gold monthly [Geoff Johns] dodged the question and stated that he wasn't allowed to say much but to talk to Dan Didio.

From these three reports we can be sure of two things:

 1. most of the people who attend these panels report for comics websites, and
 2. DC isn't ready to admit that there is a Booster Gold comic in the works.

This doesn't necessarily discredit Bleeding Cool's earlier report in May that a third volume of Booster Gold comic was "imminent," but it doesn't help their credibility either.

As if that's not enough bad Booster news, Lucas Siegel of Newsarama also confirmed that Booster will not be appearing in "Trinity War."

Any plans for Booster Gold? [Geoff] Johns, "We love Booster, but he's not in Trinity War. There is something in Forever Evil #1 that connects to him though."

The silver lining is that Booster Gold fans can save some money and stop buying the "Trinity War" crossovers now. See, Comic-Con wasn't a total waste.

JL8 Is Great

Booster booster Chris Aguinaldo was the first point my attention to Li'l Blue and Gold, appearing in the latest installment of the JL8 webcomic by Yale Stewart.

JL8 Comic #135 by Yale Stewart

I have to admit, I had never heard of JL8 until Wednesday, but it seems that many of you are already following it. As I said, Chris was the first to point me in that direction via email, but I have also gotten notifications about it in Twitter and private messages, and it is even a thread in the Boosterrific Forum. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know about it!

Stewart has taken this strip one step further and merchandised it with a "Cheese it, Ted!" golden t-shirt that you can order at Society6.com.

Thanks to Yale for making such a Boosterrific comic and shirt (why doesn't Boosterrific.com offer any t-shirts?), and to everyone else for pointing it out.

Rock My World, Please

In Smallville: Season 11, Booster Gold acted like a heroic criminal. In All-Star Western, Booster Gold acted like a heroic imbecile. Neither was ideal for Booster fans, but at least Smallville had Skeets!

Last week's poll question: Were you more satisfied with Booster Gold's 3-issue appearance in All-Star Western or Smallville Season 11? (41 votes)

Were you more satisfied with Booster Gold's 3-issue appearance in All-Star Western or Smallville Season 11?

Summertime means Comic Con. Comic Con means big news. What are the chances that some of that big news will be about Booster Gold?

This week's poll question: Do you expect to hear big Booster Gold news out of Comic Con 2013?

[UPDATE 2013-07-21: This poll has been closed early to coincide with the end of Comic-Con International.]

Here Comes Comic Con International 2013

In press releases, DC has bragged that they will have "over 15 panels" at Comic Con International 2013, starting tomorrow in San Diego.

Comic Con International is the premiere comic book convention in America (if not the world!), and it seems like an opportune time for the company to unveil whether there is any truth to the rumor that Booster Gold will be getting another series sometime soon.

If you're going to the convention, have fun. If not, don't worry. I'll let you know if we hear any Boosterrific news this weekend.

Eyes Only

Last week, Erin posted the map of Booster Gold's mansion from Booster Gold, Volume 1, #16 on ExploringTheTimelab.blogspot.com. She lamented in her post, "I love looking at blueprints and maps so I do wish more comics had these sort of things."

Nearly 3 decades later, it's easy to see that cutaway as one of many Silver Age influences on Booster Gold volume 1. Time travel, sidekicks, evil doppelgangers, alien invasions, and Superman/Legion of Super-Heroes connections were cornerstones of the Silver Age DC Universe.

Immersed in the Silver Age trappings, a self-aware character like Booster Gold was a shocking departure for DC, even in the late Bronze Age. Some readers found this change refreshing, others were put off. But it is this simultaneous bi-polar acceptance and rejection of Silver Age concepts that has defined Booster Gold for most of his career (until the New 52 openly rejected the characters and history of the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe).

As a fan of Booster Gold and the comics of yesteryear, I can also say that I love looking at blueprints and maps, so I, too, wish more comics had these sort of things. Thanks for reminding us of the good old days, Erin.
