Coming Soon: Booster Gold, Renaissance Man

DC solicitations are out for August, and by my current count, Booster boosters can expect to see our hero make an appearance in at least 10 upcoming books (including reprints). That's a lot!

As we've already covered, Booster will be in August's Tales of the Human Target one-shot as well as several Dark Crisis issues.

And while we knew that Booster would be on the cover of the first issue of DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War, we are just now learning that he'll be on the 1:25 variant edition of the second issue by James Stokoe:

If you didn't know, "1:25 variant" means that for every 25 copies of the book your Local Comic Shop orders with the standard or regular variant covers, they'll get exactly one of those. The general rule of thumb in comic collecting is that you should generally expect to "pay the ratio" for these sorts of incentive variant covers: you pay approximately $25 for 1 copy at your LCS. In today's market, that's like, 5 gallons of gas!

These 1:25 covers will obviously be in limited supply, so if you want this (or any incentive variant — so named because the publisher is using it to create an incentive to buyers to purchase more copies than they might be otherwise initially inclined to order), I recommend you negotiate with your LCS ahead of time to try and strike a deal that will be worthwhile to both of you.

On the other hand, the collected edition of Blue and Gold is due on September 27 for a comparatively meager $19.99. And while I'm sure you already have all the individual issues, won't it be nice to have them all bound under one cover?

You can find all the August solicitations at GamesRadar.com. Spend wisely, Booster boosters.

Coming Soon: Tales of the Human Target

Ready for some scary news for Friday the 13th?

Tom King is going to be writing more Booster Gold.

Announced earlier this week via substack.com, Tales of the Human Target is a one-shot anthology issue of Human Target / Justice League International team-up stories that will include a Booster Gold adventure drawn by Kevin Maguire.

(Par of) Booster will even appear on the issue's alternate cover by David Marquez:

I have not enjoyed King's treatment of the JLI in the Human Target mini-series so far, so I can't honestly say that I'm enthusiastic about reading this. But I will definitely be buying it to look at Maguire's pictures when the book comes out on August 23, 2022.

Coming Soon-ish: Blue and Gold TPB

Look what I found this week on Amazon.com:

Blue & Gold Paperback — September 27, 2022 by Dan Jurgens (Author), Ryan Sook (Illustrator) Who needs the Justice League? DC's fan-favorite duo, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, are on their own—and online, as these underdogs embrace social media and start a superhero business!

So nice to see that this will available for me to give all my friends a copy for Christmas.

Just One More Crisis

We're still learning about what DC's summer crossover Dark Crisis event will be. We've seen pictures of Booster Gold in June's Dark Crisis #1 and Young Justice: Dark Crisis #1, but thanks to aipt.com, we can now be pretty sure he'll be making at least a cameo appearance in May's Dark Crisis #0 Free Comic Book Day Special Edition:

You'll note that Booster Gold is included in the Brad Meltzer-era group and not the Giffen/DeMatteis-era Justice League International group. I can only assume that's because Booster was not on Kevin Maguire's 1987 cover of Justice League #1 (because he wasn't on the team yet).

But not only was he not a member of the 2006 relaunch, he also wasn't on the Ed Benes / Maria Benes / Alex Sinclair 2006 cover of Justice League of America #1. At least not at first.

See, these are the two "standard" covers of Justice League of America #1 which were distributed equally:

You can see for yourself that Booster Gold isn't on either one. However, he *was* on the solicited cover, which included many differences from what eventually appeared on comic shop racks:

The solicited art was finally used on the second printing of that issue. If I were the guessing sort, I'd assume that when creating the art for Dark Crisis #0, artist Cheung had access to the solicitation image, and that's why Booster ended up where he ended up in the gallery pic above.

Or maybe Dark Crisis is changing the DC Multiverse (again) and now Booster was a active member during that era of the league.

Either way, Dark Crisis #0 will be in your Local Comic Shop this Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 7.

Double the Crisis

Last month DC teased us with a snippet of Booster Gold in attendance at the memorial service for the Justice League coming this summer to the pages of Dark Crisis #1:

© DC Comics

We already knew there were going to be several specials tying into the event. Thanks to SyFy.com, we now know that there will also be a Dark Crisis: Young Justice mini-series as well.

This is the first page of released art.

So we can be doubly sure that Booster Gold is at that memorial service!

If you're hesitant to buy that issue for just a cameo Booster Gold appearance, you should know that Booster also appears on one of the issue's variant covers. Or, more accurately, his shirt will.

I think that's supposed to be former Justice League mascot Snapper Carr wearing Booster's laundry. Which is cool.

Twice the reason to buy Dark Crisis: Young Justice in June!
