Reading the Tea Leaves

As seen recently on Twitter:

After having two #1 films at the box office in summer 2011, it took until this summer to get another film with my name on it into production. Every other film/pilot I worked on between then & now died or was rewritten so much that my name didn't appear on it. -- @MuseZack 16 Aug 2018

Hmm. All of his projects since 2011 are "dead"? Yet Stentz "liked" the reply comment about Booster Gold? What does that mean for his Booster Gold screenplay?

In case you were unaware, Zack Stentz is the writer of the Booster Gold movie script commissioned in 2016 by and delivered in 2017 to Flash producer Greg Berlanti. Berlanti announced as recently as May 2018 that he wants to direct it.

Despite all that good news, Booster Gold: The Movie has never received any official announcement through Warner Bros, the parent company of DC Comics and the studio behind every DC movie to date. And today's tweet from the screenwriter implies that if the script isn't dead, it's at least being rewritten.

So what's the takeaway here?

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say it's not dead yet, just moving really, really slowly. Given that the upcoming DC Universe streaming service is going to need lots of new content to justify the $8/month subscription cost — which is why Berlanti has lately been working on Titans and Stargirl television series — it seems likely that any Berlanti-helmed Booster Gold project still working its way through channels would also have that destination in mind. Because that streaming service doesn't exist yet (beta testing has been announced to start sometime this month), it may be some time before Stentz's Booster Gold script, or any other, makes it into production.

And, of course, if Warner Bros does decide they want to move ahead with a Booster Gold movie for the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter speculates that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is available, assuming he wants to helm a movie about a celebrity looking for redemption for past misdeeds.

To know for sure if or when we might ever see Stentz's script or any Booster Gold project become a reality, we'd need a Time Sphere. Since that's even less likely than seeing a Booster Gold movie, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what we see.

Enjoy The Little Things

My television has been bombarded by Teen Titans Go! To the Movies ads for the past two weeks. I didn't pay them too much attention — I try to avoid movie trailers; I think they give too much away — but I could have sworn I kept spotting the Corporate Crusader in the background of some of the big group shots. Try as I might, I couldn't confirm that from the official trailers I found on YouTube.

That is, I couldn't prove it until yesterday. Feast your eyes upon this:

Booster Gold is clearly visible in this screen capture from the trailer compilation posted by Comicbook.com. You'll find this clip at 2:16 and repeated at 3:20. It's a Booster two-fer!

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is in theaters now, so I guess I'll be going to the movies this weekend.

Booster Gold Saves the World (of Movies)

Last week at CBR.com, Jason Cohen postulated that Booster Gold is the solution to most of the problems with the DC Extended Universe (read: movies).

Booster may not seem like the blockbuster name that will fix the DCEU, but the character could do the necessary legwork to "boost" confidence in the future of the troubled cinematic universe. Between the character's bumbling wannabe hero schtick, his time traveling capabilities, and a character arc on par with Iron Man or Ant-Man, he's the perfect choice to cement the redefinition of the DCEU.

I certainly agree with Cohen's larger point that the DCEU needs an overhaul. I'm not so sure, however, that Booster is the solution.

I'm really of two minds about this. On the one hand, I'd love to see a good Booster Gold movie. On the other hand, I'm not sure that Warner Bros even can make a good Booster Gold movie.

Until Warner Bros demonstrates to me that they can consistently make the kind of superhero films I want to see — Wonder Woman's first two acts were a good start — perhaps it would be best if Booster remained the greatest hero the cinema-going public has never heard of.

Keep Watching

In case you missed the news on Friday, Greg Berlanti told TheWrap.com that the much anticipated Booster Gold movie is still "in development with DC."

According to Wrap reporter Matt Donnelly, Berlanti said

"They're trying to figure out both the distance that we still have to travel and how we want to execute it."

Another factor for the studio, he said, was "how it's going to fit into their greater landscape" — meaning the rest of the DC Films slate that has been in a state of flux given the muted critical and box office reception for films like Suicide Squad and Justice League.

"That's really on them, they're still kind of determining their order of business on that end."

The article goes on to state that Berlanti has completed a draft of the script (presumably by Zack Stentz), and he "remains open" to directing ("if the studio is excited — it's obviously their determination").

It sounds to me like Booster boosters need to start showing some love to the live-action DC films currently in the pipeline at Warner Bros (and maybe also to Berlanti's current movie project, Love, Simon) if we want to encourage the studio to finally pull the trigger on bringing Booster Gold: The Movie to a theater near us anytime soon.

Kreisberg Out at CW

KryptonSite.com reported yesterday that Warner Bros has terminated their association with Andrew Kreisberg following a three week investigation into inappropriate behavior.

Though Kreisberg was most recently credited as Executive Producer on CW television shows The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, fans of Booster Gold most likely know him as the writer of the Justice League Unlimited episode "The Greatest Story Never Told." Kreisberg was also attached to an attempt to sell a Booster Gold television show to Syfy in 2011. He has long been an avid promoter of our hero.

I had expressed disappointment last year when Greg Berlanti announced that Zack Stentz, not Kreisberg, would be the writer working on the latest attempt to get a Booster Gold movie off the ground. However, given the recent events, perhaps that was for the best. At least Kreisberg's ouster shouldn't harm Berlanti's prospects of getting its Booster Gold movie made.
