This Day in History: Animal Man #22

On this date in 1960, the United States of America defeated the Soviet Union at ice hockey for the first time ever on their way to the gold medal in the Winter Olympic Games. On this date in 1980, Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" won the first (and only) Grammy in the Best Disco Recording category. And on this date in 1990, Booster Gold did what he does best: helped Animal Man steal a time machine in Animal Man #22.

Preceding the events of Animal Man #22, Animal Man's family had been killed by assassins. Desperate to turn back the clock and save his wife and children, Animal Man reached out to fellow Justice Leaguer Booster Gold in order to enlist the aid of Rip Hunter, the Time Master. Booster arranges the meeting, but is critical of Animal Man's behavior. (This scene will be re-visited in Time Masters #4, published three weeks later.)

No doubt issue writer Grant Morrison was being intentionally ironic in having Booster Gold -- a hero with a questionable moral compass himself -- question "what kind of hero" Animal Man is for lying to Rip Hunter. A significant and recurring theme of Morrison's run on Animal Man was the value of comic book-style heroics and the over-simplified ethical values therein. Does Booster Gold have any right to criticize another hero? Does anyone?

It has never been revealed if Booster holds any animosity over being an accomplice in Animal Man's dishonest appropriation of Rip Hunter's time-backpack. Perhaps its no coincidence that these two characters who dress so similarly haven't shared an on-panel conversation since.

Despite Booster's brief appearance, Animal Man #22 is a journey through the emotional state of a very disturbed Buddy Baker and as such is part of a much larger narrative. The issue is recommended to fans willing to involve themselves in a meta-textual investigation of the nature of comics, but only if they are willing to read the issues that came before (several of which are referenced herein) and stick around for the long haul.

Is the End Near?

No matter how you voted in this poll, know that you are making Booster Gold proud.

Last week's poll question: How is being a fan of Booster Gold reflected in your behavior? (33 votes)

How is being a fan of Booster Gold reflected in your behavior?

Speaking of mercenary behavior: I don't know if it's the cancellation of Booster's title, the coming of the New 52, the worldwide cultural zeitgeist of impending doom, or something I've done wrong, but traffic here at Boosterrific.com is half of what it was even 6 months ago and trending downward. Outside of less than 5 regular visitors (you all know who you are), participation in the site is practically nonexistent.

Boosterrific.com has been online since 2007, but didn't have a daily blog until 2010. Together, the apparent public dis-interest in the site coupled with my extreme, ongoing personal disappointment in the New DC have led me to have doubts about the value of continuing to update this blog on a daily basis.

What I need to know this week is if anyone even cares if this part of the site goes away. Please honestly answer this week's poll so I can get some feedback from you, the site visitors, about this quandary.

No Blue and No Gold Leaves Us Seeing Red

Mega Con 2012 was held in Orlando this past weekend. Most of the details about the New 52 still just depresses me, so I'll cut to the chase: DC confirmed again in two separate panels that there will be no Blue Beetle and Booster Gold reunion in the DCnU in the foreseeable future.

Before you throw yourself off a bridge, be aware that Dan DiDio did confirm that there is a Kord Industries somewhere in the new DC Universe. But we already knew that because an advertisement for Kord Industries could be seen between Booster Gold ads in the backgrounds of Teen Titans #4. Given that more Booster Gold advertisements will be appearing in today's Teen Titans #6, maybe we'll see more Kord ads as well. That's likely the only way we'll see even a hint of Ted Kord for awhile.

Billy Hogan has posted summaries of DC's "All Access" and "New 52" Mega Con 2012 panels at SupermanHomepage.com.

Happy Birthday, Ultra Boy

Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the Legion of Super-Heroes' most prominent members, Ultra Boy. Ultra Boy and Booster Gold go way back: Ultra Boy was one of the first 3 heroes to "greet" Booster Gold in his debut in 1985.

© DC Comics

While their relationship may have started off on the wrong foot, it improved over time. The two heroes from the future would meet one another time and time again. As you might expect with Ultra Boy, whose powers only work one at a time, only one of the pair can ever seem to remember the other.

Certainly, it doesn't help that for years, the two seemed to be constantly switching costumes or noms de guerre. Then time was re-written and everything old was new again. As all good time-cops know, anyone who doesn't remember their history is doomed to repeat it.

Here's to you, Ultra Boy. Even if you can't remember your birthday, we can.
