That's a paraphrase of a question that I was asked in an email I received over the weekend. It's a good question. I've got a lot of good questions recently.
Last week, my Local Comic Shop Guy, who knows what I like to read and what I don't, saw I was buying Superman #29 and said, "Booster Gold must be in that." I nodded, and said I wasn't really looking forward to reading it. And he said, "Then why are you buying it?" That's another good question, and I didn't like my answer.
I'm reasonably proud of what I've built here since Boosterrific.com went live, but lots of things have changed since 2007. I've long since come to terms with the fact that I'll never make a dime off this hobby, so I should only keep maintaining it as long as I enjoy it. It's that enjoyment that has recently been called into question.
I do still enjoy reading and talking about comic books. I enjoy contributing to the world's aggregation of trivial knowledge. And I am still fond of Booster Gold. But for some time now, at least since the start of the "All In" era, I have not particularly enjoyed most of what DC Comics is publishing. The upcoming "DC K.O." looks to me like very much continuing in the wrong direction.
I've been here before. I hated almost everything about the New 52. I considered giving up this site then, but I held on, and things eventually (after about 5 years) got better. There's no reason not to believe that cycle won't repeat itself, and the current editors and creatives at DC who are making comics I don't want to read will eventually move on to other projects. So I think in the meantime, I'll try just ignoring them.
I'm not sure what that will mean for this site. I'll keep the Boosterrific! Database of releases up-to-date, but maybe fewer annotations as I spend less time with books I don't enjoy. (I've already disconnected the code on the home page that reports days since Booster's last DCU appearance.) There will likely be fewer Boosterrific! Blog posts, maybe just one a week, as I try to avoid the things that don't entertain me. If that's the price to maintain my own quality of life, I'm sorry to disappoint any potential site visitors, but so be it.
That sort of granular minutia? That's the fun part for me. No question.

Hi Walter. First of all, I would like to thank you for maintaining this site. While I almost never write a comment, I always read your posts.
I completely understand your feelings regarding the current DC Comics reading experience. My opinion is that DC has removed all joy and sense of wonder from their comics. It is an absolute torture to read them and I'm not too hopeful that it will change in the future. I, too, am tired of the constant darkness, unlikable heroes, over abundance of events , recycled ideas, continuity-mess and reduction of their incredible universe to a minimum of three or four franchises.
I "broke up" with DC when Booster Gold Vol. 2 was abruptly cancelled to make way for The New 52. I had been following that series for years and cancelling it without allowing Dan Jurgens to close the unfinished plots like the Black Bettle and Rip Hunter's mum identities felt to me like a total lack of respect. Even worse was to know that Dan was planning to resolve all the series plots and mysteries in an oversized issue #50... but the decision to make way to the New 52 and cancel the series was so rushed and unprepared that Dan couldn't even fit the answers in his last four issues. I felt completely betrayed.
From that moment on, I tried to give some series and stories a chance but I was never won back again by DC and each year was worst than the previous one until a few years ago I decided to completely abandon reading new comics. Instead, I am now reading DC comics from the 70's, 80's and 90's that I had never had the chance before and what a pleasure they are!
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to say that life is too short to spend our time on things we don't love. If you don't enjoy following new DC comics anymore, you don't have any obligation to keep doing it (not to us site visitors and neither to you).
Sorry for any mistakes. English is not my native language.
Best regards!

Thank you, Ariel. Here's to enjoyable comics wherever (or whenever) you find them!

Hi Walter
Bob here. you know my take on this here. I absolutely agree with my fellow poster. But I was really hoping that you would hang in there until the TV show. I feel that your site has been an asset to the community. And would be dearly missed. Also have you read Justice League Dark Tomorrow special? It has Booster Gold on the cover and features Waverider the ship. And they may have killed off Waverider Booster. Me and Mom really enjoy it. I understand if its not your cup of tea.

Hi, Bob. Yes, I read the Dark Tomorrow Special. I did not particularly enjoy it. A whole lot of people get killed off in that story, and I'm tired of all the death. (By the way, the Waverider killed in that story is the original, Matthew Ryder. Since the DC Multiverse is infinite, I assume Waverider Booster is still out there somewhere.)

Well it saddens me but i think we all saw this coming i believe. My visits here were a high point in my life. But if it brings you no joy, man..ya gotta let it go. Doing something out of a grudging obligation instead of love...not worth doing. May iinvite you to join the Dixonverse ? Its a facebook page of wrestling and comic nerds curated by Chuck Dixon. Its a bunch of cranky oldfarts who happen to be nerds.

I started writing a comment on last week's post, but couldn't get the words to behave in the way I wanted to. I'm also very disillusioned with the current output from DC and have been for many years, but I keep finding older comics I haven't read (or re-reading old favourites) and get reminded why I fell so in love with comics. Your website helps a lot with that, because it's a comic nerd nerding out about comics.

I had a lot of similar thoughts that you provoked me to put down. But wrt the suggestion of hanging around in Dixon-curated spaces as suggested above, I'd certainly suggest due diligence, given the blocks on the man's shoulders, and how those choices have manifested in terms of the projects he's been willing to work on.
In the meantime, I hope you're okay, Walter.

I agree with others in thanking you for this wonderful little website.
It really was the first place I really landed when I initially 'met' Booster via the DC Universe City Tours and got curious about who this Booster Gold guy was supposed to be.
If not for your website, I don't think I ever would've found Booster, Beetle, or the hilariously awesome original JLI run - regardless of what anyone else might say, my life would be much the poorer without those classics.
I hope you can find what you're looking for outside of this website! And thank you for keeping it online instead of just folding everything in and taking it down entirely. While I will miss the Blog posts, I totally get how hard it is to keep them up when everything in modern comics is darker and grimmer than a horror novel (and I don't even read any comics these days!)
God Bless,
Tinuvial

Oh, you're all so kind! (You make it sound like I'm dying.) Please know that it's you, the Booster boosters, who have kept up my motivation to keep this blog going as long as it has. Even the lurkers. Booster Gold is lucky to have such great fans.

I'm happy you didn't give up the site. This space remains one of my daily stops for updates and comic news. I may not agree with your opinions on Tom King(🤣), but value the time and TLC you've put out here. As someone who used to run and write for comic sites back in the day, your effort and dedication is appreciated! Much love, here's to making Booster great again(sorry, not sorry). 🥂 🍾Cheers mate!

Hello! I have been regularly checking this blog ever since I became a Boostermaniac, reading up the recent news and trivia you write up every week, and just wanted to say: I love your writing and appreciate the work you've done and kept going for such a long time. I've learned a lot about one of my favorite heroes thanks to boosterrific.com =)
Whatever you ultimately decide related to the site, I hope you do what is best for yourself. It sucks to feel burned out on something, yet feel the need to keep going when it doesn't do you any good mentally. 😢
Wishing you all the best! Put yourself first and take care!

I just want to add my two cents in! I also love this site, but completely understand where you're coming from. Why keep spending money and time on something that you don't enjoy? It'll turn around, but like last time, it may take a while, and I think slowing things down on the blog is an understandable and logical choice... after all, there is very little Booster-related news right now, and very little that's satisfying.
I think I found this site accidentally... just doing an old-fashioned internet search for fan sites. I love the polished look of this one, and that posts were still on-going! I remember finding a similar Ted Kord fansite, that had already been defunct for years. I don't know if any other superhero has such a great site. You are one of a kind!
If people are looking for other content to scratch the JLI-related itch, I would recommend the Fire and Water JLI podcasts. I know Walter has recommended them before, but for those who haven't tried them yet, they are pretty enjoyable!

This is one of my favorite websites on the internet, a beautiful font of knowledge. However you go from here, just know you've turned thousands of people into Booster fans, including me.

I haven't been into newly published comics in years. Even when good writing and good artwork is involved, I just can't enjoy the modern style.
I read old comics from the 80s and 90s
I hope this site continues at least
Semi-regular features like the 'my favorite page' updates.
Such a great and polished site

Thank you for all the work and passion! But if there is no joy anymore you got to let go (I have the same problem with my job..).
