This Day in History: Encyclopedia Gold

As the first character introduced to the DC Universe after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Booster Gold was too new for his own entry in the original Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe character encyclopedia. (Volume III: Black Lightning to Byth was cover dated May 1985, nearly a year before Booster's first appearance.)

While Booster would have to wait for the 1987 Who's Who Update to receive his own listing, Booster's impact on the DC Universe was felt much sooner. Therefore, Booster first appeared not in his own entry but in support of one of the DCU's more established characters (insofar as a seldom used star of a back-up feature in Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane in the early 1970s can be considered "established").

If you look closely, you'll see our hero in the background of the entry for Rose and Thorn in Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe Volume 19, released 31 years ago today.

(The less said about Thorn's costume the better. Obviously Thorn and Batman and the Outsider's Looker shopped from the same designer label in the 80s.)

Whereas Booster went on to become an integral member of the Justice League International, Rose has rarely been seen in the decades since. Maybe it's time for Booster to return the favor.

Pub Crawlers

Matthew Cain recently acquired this commission from artist Jeremey Treece (of "I'm So Goth" web comics and JeremeyTreece.com):

Blue and Gold commission by Jeremey Treece

Some great details were definitely lost when I shrank the original scan down for inclusion here, so I recommend you visit ComicArtFans.com to see it embiggened. So much fun!

More Booster Gold In Comics

Booster Gold reappears this week in the latest digital installment of DC's Injustice 2 "Chapter 10."

After his walk-on role in last week's "Chapter 9," Booster's appearance here isn't a big surprise, but it does make one stop to wonder why Booster can show up in stories taking place outside of regular DCnrU continuity but not in a DCnrU comic itself. First Flintstones, now Injustice — what's next? Scooby-Doo?

Before you ask, yes, I'd buy that.

You can find Injustice 2 Chapters 9 and 10 now at Comixology.com for 99¢ apiece. They'll be available together in your Local Comic Shop (as Injustice 2 #5) on July 5 for $2.99.

Have You Seen This Woman?

I received this email this weekend:

I know this might be a long shot, but I found one (and only one!) cosplayer doing Goldstar on the Internet, and the photos also appear on your Boosterrific website.

These photos were from back in 2011 at Emerald City Comicon.

I figure at this point maybe the cosplayer isn't using the costume anymore and might want to sell it. I am interested in repurposing it for use by an actress in my video series Heroineburgh. (http://www.heroineburgh.com)

Any information at all on who the cosplayers might be? (both the Goldstar and Booster one from that Con).

Thanks for any help you can provide!

If anyone knows anything, send a note to info@heroineburgh.com.

Those Who Live in Glass Houses

Last Friday marked the release of the latest installment of the Silver and Gold Podcast. Episode 29, "Fresh Start," features Booster Gold Volume 1 #16.

I love that issue. It's got a great cover, and Booster wears a crew cut, a white suits with rolled up sleeves, and a pair of red Chuck Taylors. What can I say? I'm a child of the 80s.

The true highlight of that issue, however, is this Silver Age throwback: a map of Booster Gold Incorporated Mansion headquarters.

When was the last time you saw a comic with a map of the team headquarters? Kids these days don't know what they're missing.

Anyway, you can find links to listen to the Silver and Gold podcast in your choice of formats at sngpod.wordpress.com.
