The Best Around

Last things first: the final episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold is scheduled to air tonight on Cartoon Network at 7:00 PM EST. Booster Gold is guaranteed to make an appearance at the end of the episode. Batman: The Brave and the Bold, you will be missed.

As for the weekly poll, Geoff Johns may have brought a lot of modern readers to Booster Gold, but the modern trend of 6-issue stories isn't even remotely the most popular option with the character's readers. Canceling popular television shows and running comic book unpopularly too long? Does DC pay any attention to its fan base?

Speaking of fan favorites, you probably know that you can rate each issue of Booster's 470 and counting comic book appearances here at Boosterrific.com. (If you haven't done so, I highly encourage you to rate your feelings about Booster's appearances. I assure you that people are interested in your opinion.) According to the fan ratings already in the Boosterrific.com database, only 15 issues have earned perfect 5-star ratings from multiple reviewers. Narrowing those down to 5 samples from distinctly different series, I think it's about time we started figuring out which of these is the best.

Booster Gold #1:
His first issue is of course a classic and fine introduction..but it is not his finest hour. That is the good thing about Booster, he gets better and more interesting over the years instead starting on a high level only to start dropping.
JLA Classified #5:
The Supperbuddies stories were entertaining..but a bit too much on the BWA-HA-HA side
Booster Gold, v2, #30:
A very fine Comic that shows perfectly how Booster has grown and changed. A hallmark for his character, but not my favourite story
Justice League: Generation Lost #8
The series had it's flaws, but in the end it was still awesome and in eyes one of the best Booster stories ever told, yet neither this issue nor the whole story takes the top spot for me
Countdown to Infinite Crisis #1
THIS was the first Comic I ever read and made stick around for more. I got my first taste of the Blue & Gold and wanted more. While the story focused on Ted it was just amazing to see Booster through his eyes. For me this is not just the great beginning of Boosters "second coming" but also my personal entry into the world of comics.

I like COUNTDOWN very much. It is a good story, but I still find the fate of Blue Beetle to be a bit of an artificial cheat just for shock value (a Geoff Johns trademark!). Blue Beetle had escaped from tougher situations dozens of times for this to be his last stand. For that reason, I cannot consider it a great book. (Though I have to say, if it was your first book or you were unaware of the Blue Beetle's history, that bit may not bother you at all.)

My dirty little secret here is that my personal favorite isn't among the options listed. (I voted "other" in my own poll.) I plan to run my favorite against the leading vote winner later. If anyone else has any suggestions that aren't on this list, I invite them to post in the comments.

My personal favorite will always be Booster Gold #1, the original!

Such a unique take on a superhero, an on-going mystery launched and just a fun book overall!

I know that countdown had flaws, not just Ted's fate, but also the unexplained turn to evil by Max. But like you said, when one is not familiar with any of their history and characters(and my knowledge about the DCU was even smaller than that of the normal not comic reader, as I had not even watched any of the cartoons as a kid), you just can't notice and judge these flaws. If I had read JLI % co before, I would have been mad as well.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Figures

They say that you can have too much of a good thing, so it's good to know that most of our voters exercise some restraint with their collecting. Hopefully you are saving your money for the big-ticket Booster Gold collectibles, such as a life-sized Skeets replica -- should they ever come out.

Speaking of too much of a good thing, once upon a time comic book stories were told succinctly in a issue or less. Now stories typically plod slowly over a half dozen issues so that they can be collected into trades. How do you feel about this storytelling decompression?
