Play as Booster Gold in Heroes Unite

In the Boosterrific Forum last week, CDN updated us that there were new developments online about the DC Deck-Building Game expansion Heroes Unite. (The game was previously mentioned on January 28 and June 24.)

© Cryptozoic

Thanks to the website of the game's publisher, cryptozoic.com, we now know that Booster Gold will be a playable character!

  • Play as Shazam!, Hawkman, Red Tornado, Nightwing, Black Canary, Batgirl, or Booster Gold.
  • Each Super Hero has a unique special ability that will open up different strategies to the player. Follow that strategy or break away with a plan of your own!
  • Card combos, strategy, and fun abound in this game where every card is a well-known, fan-favorite card with amazing art. This is a standalone game, but also an expansion to the hit DC Comics Deck-building Game released in late 2012. Mix the two sets together for the ultimate showdown!
  • Easy to learn, entertaining and engaging gameplay.

CDN points out that while RB Silva's art was used for the box, previously existing art appear to have been used for the cards themselves. "Even the games want Booster back in his preNu costume," he adds. For example, the Kevin Maguire alternate cover to Justice League: Generation Lost can be seen on the "Booster Gold" card. If pre-Flashpoint art was used, does that mean we'll be seeing Skeets? (IhopeIhopeIhope.)

Cryptozoic plans a fourth quarter 2013 release, so the game should be available for Christmas. I know what I want to see under my tree this year!

What the Best Dressed Heroines are Wearing

Since Comic-Con International started two weeks ago, I have received repeated requests for pictures of Booster Gold cosplayers. Specifically, fans have been asking for pictures of female versions of Booster Gold. These are typically referred to as Earth-11 Booster Gold or Rule 63 Booster Gold, depending on whether your frame of reference is comic books or the internet. In either event, I know when I'm beaten; your wish is my command.

Above left are Katy Mor and Jettie Monday, respectively, as Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. This pair of professional models have been making a name for themselves as Blue and Gold on the convention circuit, selling some stunning photographs by Bill Nash. Jettie Monday has even written about her experience as Booster Gold for Geek News Network.

Together, this creative pair of dedicated fans have been dressing as the world's best comic duo at conventions for awhile, including in this year's Comic-Con (as photographed by William Tung). Together, they now run their own custom costume shop at Suit Up Productions.

Old News Is Good News

Over the holiday weekend, CDN took me to task for not reporting something here on the Boosterrific Blog back in April. Specifically, I failed to forward the news that so far as Geoff Johns is concerned, Booster Gold is "always a Time Master."

As I explained in my apology to CDN, that bit of news came out the same weekend as the announcement that SyFy got their hands on a Booster Gold pilot script. As a result, what Geoff Johns said at the 2012 Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (aka "C2E2") managed to fall off the front page of the blog. Readers of Russ Burlingame's reporting at Comicbook.com were aware of this news, but I failed to pass it along here at Boosterrific.com.

Good news like that shouldn't fall through the cracks. Sorry, CDN.

And while I'm on the subject of old news, perhaps I should pass along a link to Adam WarRock and Mikal kHill performing the song "Booster Gold" that has been posted on YouTube. (Beware, the song contains "explicit lyrics" and is not work safe, which is why I don't embed it here directly.) WarRock released the song and its album, You Dare Call That Thing Human?!?, a few months back, and both are still very much available for download from adamwarrock.bandcamp.com. (The song costs just for just $1 to download!) We shouldn't stop supporting songs about Booster Gold just because they're a few months old. Thanks to Moregenstern for that link.

Where would I be without you Booster-philes?

Booster Gold International: Canada

Booster Gold a Canadian? How can that be? Canadian-native Boosterphile CDN tells us in today's entry in the "Booster Gold International" files:

Booster Gold, Canadian

The DCnU character of Booster does seem to resemble Canada as a whole. He wants to be big, he wants to be flashy, he wants to be one of the big guys. Canada's always been like this. We've always wanted to be big and noticed, we've always tried to play with the big boys, but we've always been over shadowed by the bigger guys, like America, Russia, China, England (say, Hal, Bruce, Clark, Diana as a comic comparison from Booster's perspective). Despite our wanting to be taken seriously, we're often shut out and just pushed to the side, much like Booster with dealing with the big leagues. But despite this, when we do make ourselves noticed, people take notice. With Canada, when we've been called on to help, we have, and we've been praised. WW1 was when we became known as our own country (despite having independence for nearly 50 years) and in WW2, we were often called on when the Germans needed kicked out of an area the Brits or French couldn't take. And yet we still are considered children on the world stage. This is just like Booster, no matter what he does, is still not seen as a true hero.

Now, on a cultural sense, yes America and Canada are the same, but we're also shier and don't like being the centre of attention. We are reserved, calm and polite. On a cultural sense, Booster is seen as the stereotypical American. (From what comes next, I mean no offence lol) Canadians see American's as people who have the best intentions at heart...but don't go about their means properly. They're loud, obnoxious, rash, hasty and at times, annoying. Americans love being the centre of attention, they love having the focus on them and they'll gladly take on people they don't need to just to prove they can kick their asses. But, to Canadians, they aren't all bad. They're our best friends and we know we can depend on them. We know if we're ever in need, they'll be there. If we ever take a bullet to the head, America will be the first to jump in on our defence.

That all said, from a Canadians perspective, Booster Gold can be seen as a blond Guy Gardner. The perfect American. He's everything we seen an American as. That's how we view you's and that's what Booster portrays.

However, if Booster Gold found himself in Canada, I doubt he'd feel an sort of culture shock. We are America Lite, basically. I believe the only thing he would truly notice was instead of the cultures mixing like they do in America, our immigrants keep their culture strong and we are seen as a mosaic. We let the cultures do what they want. Hell, we even love football up here. We have the CFL, which, let's be honest, takes more skill then the NFL (cheeky comment/joke). The only thing Michael may need to brush up on if he ever comes up here is how to play hockey.

Thanks for that Canadian point of view CDN. In future posts, we'll look at Booster Gold from German and Swiss viewpoints. If you are from another country and wish to share what Booster Gold would mean to your culture, drop me an email at webmaster at Boosterrific.com.

Preview Justice League International #6

Did you know that Justice League International #6 will be released next week?

© DC Comics

Well, I am. Fortunately for me, Boosterrific Forum contributor CDN pointed out that Kotaku.com has a 5-page preview of the issue. Given that Booster Gold appears on all five pages, hinting that it will be a very Booster-oriented issue, I have to say that I like what I've seen.

(And I'll like it even more if we finally get to meet the DCnU Skeets.)
