Viral Ads at Boosterrific

This weekend, the following was posted in the comments here at Boosterrific.com Blog for a post about last year's Comic Con.

Bob posted on Mar. 26, 2011 at 8:52 AM
That's awesome Geoff Johns is writing another episode of Smallville, I liked what he did with the Justice Society in a previous episode. I don't know your personal preference, but I need my Smallville in HD. Just to let you know, DISH Network has plenty of affordable packages with HD right now and you can find information on how to get free HD on DISH Network's official website. Don't you want to see Smallville in HD?

A friend of the site pointed it out and suggested that I delete it as obvious viral marketing. However, the commenter, Bob (bot or not?), was careful to respond to the content of the original post and did not include a direct link to the site he is clearly shilling for. I happen to think that Booster Gold would be particularly pleased by this sort of viral marketing, so I think it should remain a valid comment here on the site, don't you?

Besides, I do kind of want to see Booster Gold in Smallville in HD.

(This comment also included encoding translation error artifacts, exactly like a post last week by Erin. Two in one week; it's a sign! I therefore took the time to adapt the script to eliminate these irritating bugs. Hopefully.)

Who Reads Newspapers Anymore?

Booster Gold would be thrilled to know that he got a mention in yesterday's edition of the Houston Chronicle, the largest newspaper in Texas, and one of the 10 largest in the United States by circulation.

BEYOND THE BIG THREE
Everybody knows Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Here's a handful of more obscure (and definitely odd) DC heroes:
• Booster Gold: A 25th-century opportunist who travels back in time to play the hero and cash in on the glory.

Booster is included in an aside detailing several "obscure" DC heroes, including Metamorpho, Plastic Man, Swamp Thing, and Zatanna. That seems an odd selection given the fact that Swamp Thing has starred in movies and television shows, and Plastic Man has been around since 1941. But I'm sure that I'm not the one who gets to judge what the public considers obscure about DC Comics.

The article, "DC Comics celebrates a superhero milestone" [sic] credited to René A. Guzman of the San Antonio Express-News, is mostly dedicated to DC's 75th anniversary celebration DVD, Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics released earlier this month. Still, it's great to see Booster exposed to a much, much larger audience than the 17,000 people who are currently buying his book nationwide. The entire article can be found on the Chronicle's website, chron.com.

Boosterrific Ad Revenue

Today, a treat for those of you who may be interested in money, statistics, or the inner working of a fan website. Ads were added to Boosterrific one month ago yesterday, and the totals are in. In a month of whoring ourselves out Booster Gold style, we've earned... $1.08. Ads on Boosterrific are brought to you by Google, and Google won't even consider this an actual revenue-generating website until it has acquired $10 in credit. At the present rate, that's November 2010. However, Google won't actually cut a check until we've acquired $100 in credit. At the present rate, that's not until May 2018. So mark your calendars: come 2018, we'll be partying like it's 1999.

Boosterrific Needs Your Help!

DC Introduces Booster Gold

I've decided I need to add all issues from 1985-1986 containing DC house advertisements for the original Booster Gold series to the database here at Boosterrific. (It was an early decision not to include them, and I'm just now reversing myself.) I know that the ad was a DC house ad that ran in books cover-dated February 1986. However, I don't know if it ran in every book that month. For example, the DC house ad on page 12 of Booster Gold #1 that month was for 'Mazing Man. Therefore, I need to put my hands on every book released that month and confirm its presence. The following books have been confirmed to carry the house ad:

If anyone of you out there reading this were to come across any other issues, please let me know. You will, of course, receive proper credit for any instances that you turn up that are not already in the database. Thanks for the help.

More Changes Ahead

There are more changes on the horizon for Boosterrific. I'd hoped to have everything ready to go at the start of the week, but I'm not quite there yet. I'm trying to create a design that will integrate ads as innocuously as possible, without significantly modifying the site layout or function. That has proven to be something of a challenge. The up-side of this is that it is forcing me to update some of the older code on the site, not that you should notice anything. If anyone does come across any unexpected scripting errors, please bring them to my attention via a quick email addressed to webmaster at boosterrific dot com. Thank you.
