Rewatching The Greatest Story Never Told

Before Justice League Action blew my mind this weekend, I was thinking that I should start an occasional series of posts covering some of the higher points of Booster Gold fandom. After all, every day someone is probably encountering Booster Gold for the first time, and they need to know what the good stuff is.

Apparently, The A.V. Club was thinking along similar lines. Monday, the site ran an article by Noel Murray extensively praising the Justice League Unlimited series that ran on Cartoon Network from 2004 to 2006. Most of that praise was thrown at one episode in particular: "The Greatest Story Never Told."

There are few stories in the history of Booster Gold as good as "The Greatest Story Never Told."

Murray's commentary is insightful. He covers why the episode is great as well as why all comic book fans should love Booster Gold. His post's only weakness is that it fails to make it clear to any readers who have never seen the episode just how much fun it is to watch.

So if you're a Booster Gold fan (or even if you're just Booster Gold curious), you owe it to yourself to track the episode down and spend 23 minutes with the most underappreciated hero in the DC Universe.

I love-love-love this episode. It's what makes Booster Gold such a fantastic character, who is so sorrowfully underutilized in today's comics. Even the Booster we know of today (or used to know of, since he's disappeared off the face of the New Rebirth 52 etc etc verse), has all these expectations heaped upon him by the writers or the audiences. Booster Gold shines when he is depicted as someone who acts as though he desires fame, but saves the world despite not receiving the praise he deserves. He is selfless wrapped up in the disguise of someone selfish. That kind of character begs for episodic treatment. He can tell a thousand different stories, in a thousand different time periods, and it will always start and end with people not knowing how important he really is. As we left Booster in the comics, when he was last seen, they had taken his importance too far. He's not a Time Lord. He isn't Doctor Who (or, 'The Doctor' for all you newWho fans). He's a normalish guy who saves the world because it needs to be saved.

Sorry for the rambling. I can be very passionate about Booster Gold all the time.

That was the greatest episode in all of JLU.

Mina, I think you put it very well. And I agree that they took his importance too far by turning him into that Waverider thing, but in a way, they also didn't take his importance far enough, by keeping him absent. Also, while much of his selfishness is a disguise, he definitely has a genuine longing for recognition and that gives the character a lot of depth.
