ANNOTATIONS

Page 1, panel 7
Jimmy Olsen is enthusiastic to get his first writing assignment ("750 words on the street food of Metropolis") the from Daily Planet editor Perry White. Historically, Jimmy got his first published byline by tagging along with Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman #13 in 1941.

Page 1, panel 10
Jimmy references famous food writer M.F.K. Fisher, whose 1992 New York Times obituary reported she wrote 15 well-received books of essays and reminiscences. A mid-20th-century food writer seems an odd reference for a "kid" 21st century digital photographer, but Jimmy always was a bit of a nerd.

Page 1, panel 17
Jimmy lives in the poor and crime-ridden neighborhood of Suicide Slum in Metropolis, childhood home of both Perry White and Lex Luthor. Suicide Slum was also the original base of operations of the Newsboy Legion (in 1942's Star-Spangled Comics #7) and Black Lightning (revealed in 1977's Black Lightning #3), as well as the Ace O' Clubs, the bar owned by Bibbo Bibbowski, who follows Booster Gold on social media (as seen in the pages of Blue and Gold). Hob's Bay was once strictly the name of the adjacent body of water, but it's easy to understand why the powers that be in Metropolis would be eager to rebrand a neighborhood with "suicide" in its name.

Page 1, panel 24
A citywide alert warning citizens of an imminent threat and the sight of Steel flying overhead sends Jimmy to seek shelter in a closed restaurant with a sign identifying it as "Falafel's." The apostrophe "s" indicates that "Falafel" is the name of the owner.

EXTRA, EXTRA: Of course Jimmy recognizes the restaurant's chef: Booster Gold! As it happens, Jimmy was the very first reporter to report on camera during Booster's inaugural fight against Blackguard in Booster Gold #1.

Page 1, panel 30
FASHION ALERT: In addition to his apron, Booster is wearing the yellow gloves of his original costume.

Page 1, panel 31
Booster Gold is making falafels despite having "no idea what any of this is." A falafel is a Middle Eastern dish made of deep-fried peas or beans. I wonder what Falafel would think about a super hero using his kitchen to make falafels.

Page 1, panel 37
This panel, without dialogue, is used as the cover. Speaking of dialogue, "bam!" is the trademark catchphrase of celerity chef Emil Lagasse. It is unclear whether Booster is warning Jimmy against plagiarizing Lagasse or simply dislikes "bam." (We know Booster prefers such interjections as "wowsers" and "boosterrific.")

Page 1, panel 40
POWER UP: For the first time, Skeets demonstrates the ability to shoot a blast of super-cooled air, in this case to cool a bowl of blended chickpeas.

Page 1, panel 48
At Skeet's urging, Booster admits to Jimmy that despite his public persona, he secretly follows voices that tell him to do simple missions that are "important to the survival of our universe." Booster does not reveal that these voices presumably belong to his fellow Time Masters, especially Rip Hunter.

Page 1, panel 50
The most recent voice told Booster "to come here to this time and place to ensure there is a plate of food sitting on the service window." It seems "the voice" did not tell Booster explicitly what to make, so why is he making falafels if he has no idea what they are? Was he influenced by the name of the business? Or did Skeets decide they would make falafels based on the contents of the pantry? For the record, Skeets' falafel recipe is 1. soak chickpeas overnight, 2. put chickpeas, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander in blender (optional: add a small amount of cayenne to taste), 3. blend to coarse meal texture, 4. refrigerate mixture for up to an hour, 5. add baking soda, 6. scoop mixture into golf-ball-sized balls, 8. fry balls in oil for three to five minutes until brown on outside. No measurements are given. (It's a Skeet's family secret!)

Page 1, panel 54
Booster Gold, Skeets, and Jimmy Olsen watch as Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate, and Jesse Quick arrive at Falafel's and choose to eat the freshly made falafel balls they find in the service window. I'm beginning to think that "the voice" is really Doctor Fate, who just wanted some food that reminded him of his Egyptian heritage.

Page 1, panel 62
Perry White insists that Jimmy Olsen excise Booster Gold from the story, so the public will never hear how Booster saved the universe by feeding Doctor Fate!
