New Old Releases: Absolute Infinite Crisis

Other than a one panel flashback, it's been 492 days since we last saw Booster Gold in action. The last time we encountered such a drought, it was broken by the arrival of Infinite Crisis. If you miss those days, DC has something for you.

Today, DC releases Absolute Infinite Crisis, a $99.99 hardcover edition collecting the entire 2006 mini-series (though not the tie-in series like the Booster-centric The OMAC Project). Booster plays a smallish role in the story, but it does set the stage for his star turn in 52 and his second series.

If you've got $100 burning a hole in your pocket, you could spend it on worse this holiday season.

Booster All Day Every Day

Mogo is a living planet that first appeared in the Alan Moore story "Mogo Doesn't Socialize" in 1985, and in the years since has gone on to become one of the most powerful members of the Green Lantern Corps. That makes it all the more impressive to discover that Mogo is less powerful than Booster Gold.

At least in the video game Infinite Crisis.

Fragment of Mogo vs Booster Gold
These 2 items have become virtually the same item.
...
I have the impression that at this point Booster Gold is clearly a better pick.

That observation comes from poster Rikishin at the Infinite Crisis Forum, where it was generally agreed that Booster is better than Mogo. (You can find out yourself: Infinite Crisis is in open beta development at InfiniteCrisis.com.)

Both Booster and Mogo debuted in 1985, and both are virtually unknown among people who don't read DC Comics publications. As great as it is that Booster Gold comes out on top, it's just nice to see that someone is still talking about them all these years later in the Internet age.

Booster Gold Is Over Powered

Booster Gold may not be in Warner Brothers Interactive's Infinite Crisis MOBA video game, but it appears that his power suit is.

Booster Gold's Power Suit at Dawnbase.com

The details above come from Dawnbase.com, but the discussion seems to be in the game's official forum. Some think it's too powerful, others, not so much. At least one gamer named Lyri is standing up for our favorite golden gladiator:

Booster Gold is super strong.

Perfect on most heroes with a dive like AWW, Shazam, Aquaman etc, amazing synergy with heroes like Ivy Prime, WonderWoman and fills an amazing role as AD defence.

I honestly feel this item is just too good and should be mostly gotten on anybody.

"Mostly gotten on anybody"? I couldn't disagree more. Booster Gold should be gotten on everybody!

To decipher some of the above acronyms, "MOBA" stands for "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena," "AD" stands for "Attack Damage" and "AWW" stands for "Atomic Wonder Woman." If you don't know what an "Atomic Wonder Woman" is, Infinite Crisis might not be your kind of game.

Otherwise, Infinite Crisis is now in open beta development. Join the fight for free at InfiniteCrisis.com.

This Day in History: I'm on a Boat

Okay, so there won't be any Booster Gold comics for awhile. This isn't the first time Booster has gone through a bit of a drought. Our hero was rarely seen around the turn of the millennium, too. That made him perfect fodder for reinvention in DC's Tanget Comics alternate universe titles.

Tangent Comics: Tales of the Green Lantern #1, "Brightest Light," by Dan Abnett/Andy Lanning and Mike Mayhew/Wade Von Grawbadger

On this day in 1998, Booster Gold was reimagined in Tangent Comics: Tales of the Green Lantern #1. The comic features three possible origins for the Tangent Universe's Green Lantern. In the "Brightest Light," Booster plays "the crooked billionaire playboy" who had his minion Kilowog murder Lois Lane aboard his yacht, the Black Condor. Booster also kills Kilowog before getting his own comeuppance.

This was hardly the first time that Booster was given the villain treatment. He was also bad guy in Justice League America Annual #10 in 1996. Given DC's mistreatment of JLI characters over the years, we should probably be glad that it was Maxwell Lord and not Booster Gold, who became the heavy in "Infinite Crisis."

New Old Releases: Infinite Crisis Omnibus

Twenty years after he debuted in 1985's Booster Gold, Volume 1, #1, Booster Gold had faded from sight into the background of the DC Universe. Considered a laughingstock by other heroes and readers alike, his career and popularity was at its lowest point. That all changed thanks to Infinite Crisis.

Following the death of Blue Beetle (and the disassembly of Skeets) in Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Booster Gold became DC's avatar of pathos as he searched for the man responsible for the murder of his best friend (and sidekick). From death came rebirth as this ultimately led to Booster reclaiming his time travel ability as well as his position among the more prominent DC heroes.

Today, DC releases to comic shops The Infinite Crisis Omnibus. This 1,152-page hardcover collects all of the key books in the Infinite Crisis event and its four mini-series lead-ins. That's a lot of Booster Gold! The edition will retail for $150.00, which is about what it would cost you to pick up all these issues individually at your local comic shop.

As mega-crossover events go, Infinite Crisis is about as good as it gets. Too bad that Flashpoint, an example of how bad mega-crossover events can be, removed the story of Infinite Crisis from continuity. It's equally too bad that DC doesn't realize that by reminding us how entertaining their character development and continuity used to be, we won't ever be satisfied with the confusing and misguided post-Flashpoint DCnU.
