Returning to Cort

It's been almost exactly a year since we last got a peek into Cort Carpenter's Booster Gold sketchbook, so I'd say we're overdue. Fortunately for all of us, Cort just sent me a bunch of new artist commissions!

Those are just the headshots! I've got more, but I don't want anyone to overdose on too much Gold. I'll share the rest in the near future.

Thanks, Cort! Keep up the good work.

Booster Gold Would Approve of AI Art

I recently saw an AI-generated piece of art depicting Chris Pratt dressed as Booster Gold. It looked impressive, but I'm not going to link to it here because I don't think it is appropriate for me to promote the AI art generators, even when they are being used to produce stellar Booster Gold fan art.

For one thing, as both an artist and coder, I have reservations about how the AI algorithms have been created. It's one thing to program them with public domain art. It's another to indiscriminately scrape images from the World Wide Web. It wouldn't be okay for a human to reproduce that work, so the same ethics should apply to computer coders.

Perhaps more importantly than the issue of attribution, I don't want to encourage AI-generated "fan" art because I don't want to aid in normalizing acceptance of computer-generated storytelling. I'd hate to think that I played any role in robbing the creators I respect of the opportunity to continue creating for profit because they can be replaced by cheaper computer programs.

On the other hand, I have to imagine that Booster Gold would be in favor of using AI art. In addition to being raised in an era with sentient robots, he has a demonstrably weak grasp on the concept of private property. If he can make a buck selling computer-generated images of himself in action, he'd totally do it.

Maybe this is just another case of how sometimes Booster Gold is a role model for what we should not do.

Flexing

Artist Tom Reilly presented his (unofficial) redesign of Booster Gold's costume on Twitter.com, and I'd say it's pretty Boosterrific.

© DC Comics

Like: the gold star wrapping around his chest evoking football shoulder pads (bonus points for emulating the way Blue Beetle's costume utilizes a bug outline).

Dislike: the pointless triangle belt stolen from Aquaman and the weird ankle weights.

Love: the collar. All Booster Gold costumes should have a collar.

I sure wish we could have gotten something more like this in the New 52 relaunch.

Superheroes As Pets

Once a week, Brian Cronin asks Twitter for silly superhero suggestions for random artists to draw for his "Line it is Drawn" column at CBR.com. Last week, the topic was

In honor of the League of Super Pets, suggest a superhero that you'd like to see a generic pet drawn as, or feel free to supply a pic of your own pet as a suggestion. So either, say,

That delightful exchange got the world this drawing, from artist Caanan Grall:

Brilliant! I think this is a masterful expression of everything I want in a comic book.

Thanks to Eskana for pointing this out.
