The End Is (Slightly Less) Near

Newsarama.com reports that Heroes in Crisis #9 will be delayed a week until May 29. They insinuate that this was an editorial decision to coincide the release with that of the much-delayed Doomsday Clock #10. Is Doctor Manhattan now to blame for the events of Heroes in Crisis, too?

(Side note: when reading Tom King's work, I so often feel like I understand what he was trying to say while simultaneously being terribly frustrated by how he has chosen to try to say it. In that vein, Heroes in Crisis could be one of the most irritating stories I've ever bought. King clearly wants to say some real things about a real public health crisis, but his message gets lost in a murder-mystery with a reveal that is impossible to see coming — the story admits that there are literally no clues — and makes the misguided decision to turn a beloved hero into a super villain [re-writing his powers in the process] in a manner that only serves to reinforce the initial public perceptions that King ostensibly wants to break down. Grr.)

Any-way.

Speaking of Heroes in Crisis, you may have noticed that Booster Gold appears only in flashback in issue #8. At least that's what I thought when I first read it. It was only on re-read that I realized that Booster's looming presence is probably foreshadowed (pun intended) in these panels set in the present.

See that big, round shadow? The big shadow. Not the little shadows within that shadow. (Does the Speed Force cast shadows now?) It sure seems to me that big round shadow is the Blue Beetle's Bug airship arriving to witness this pivotal scene.

A recent tweeted by Tom King of the splash page for Issue #9, showcasing the Bug streaking across a breathtaking sunset, looks to confirm my theory.

Great Caesar's Ghost, that's amazing. My complaints about shadows (and Tom King's style) aside, this series really does have some of the most sublime art ever seen in a mainstream comic book.

New Release: Heroes in Crisis 7

Heroes in Crisis #7 arrives in your Local Comic Shop today, but it's already had a bit of controversy. The originally solicited, "unfinished," cover by Clay Mann was pulled back in December at the request of Tom King. It was replaced by this, the final cover by Mitch Gerads:

I have to say that I like this new cover much better, not the least because this one shows Booster Gold! (Sure, he's getting thrown around by Superman, but Superman throws everyone around. Jerk.)

You can find an issue preview online at DenOfGeek.com in which Blue Beetle and Batgirl have a conversation! (Brace yourself: Batgirl continues to be written like no incarnation of the character I've ever read before. Maybe she's the killer?)

Buy this issue and make Skeets happy!

They Makes This Look Good

I'm on record as saying I'm no fan of what Tom King has done to Booster Gold in issues of Batman and Heroes in Crisis. However, I cannot deny that my dissatisfaction has been softened considerably by some pretty fine art by King's collaborators.

Batman 45, Page 16 by Tony Daniel

Artist Tony Daniel is selling his original inks from Batman #45 on ComicArtFans.com. I'm not nuts about the story, but doesn't Daniel's Booster Gold look dashing as he crashes through that window? It can be yours for $700!

Heroes in Crisis 4, Page 17 by Clay Mann

Also on ComicArtFans.com is the single greatest page in Heroes in Crisis #4. This Clay Mann piece isn't for sale, but it is definitely Boosterrific. "Bros before heroes" forever!

Keep up the good work, everyone.

Speaking of Blue and Gold

We're still a week-and-a-half away from Heroes in Crisis #5, but what appears to be its title page turned up on reddit earlier this week. Feast your eyes on this!

That's Clay Mann's art, all right. He's really quite good. In fact, he's the best thing about Heroes in Crisis.

For the record, DC, I'd buy a book of splash pages of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold hanging out eating pizza and drinking beer. Can we make that happen?

Dream the Impossible Dream

I'm not sure what to make of this Tom King tweet from Friday:

Coming up in Heroes in Crisis. Art by @Clay_Mann_ and @tomeu_morey. @TomKingTK 30 Nov 2018

We've known since New York Comic Con back in October that King has been planning on pairing Blue and Gold for Heroes in Crisis. This tweet, presumably, is the proof that it is indeed coming. But how?

The Booster Gold in Heroes in Crisis has never been a partner of any incarnation of the Blue Beetle (so far as we know), so is their first meeting? Or a reunion of a previously unseen, shared past in the DC Rebirth Universe? Or a vision in Booster's head generated by Sanctuary?

For answers to these (and many other questions), we'll just have to keep reading future issues of Heroes in Crisis.
