For Your Consideration

Westfield Comics has posted an article detailing the origins of Booster Gold Volume 1 in advance of the reprinting of those issues for the upcoming Booster Gold: The Big Fall hardcover.

The article was written by Robert Greenberger, a former DC editor who worked on the Who's Who series. Greenberger spoke with Booster's creator, Dan Jurgens, for a first-person take on the occasion. Most of what was said will be familiar to long-time Booster boosters (much of it is corroborated by what Jurgens had previously told me in my Secret Origin interview) but it's always interesting to hear Jurgens speak of the old days at DC.

Writes Greenberger:

Jurgens pitched the idea to Giordano and was surprised at how quickly the series was picked up. "At the time, DC was a remarkably fun place to work," Jurgens recounted. "They were very, very open to new ideas and concepts. The company was committed to trying new things.

"I was at a convention in Dallas that Dick Giordano and Pat Bastienne were also attending. Dick was always highly encouraging and always said if I had anything in terms of a project idea, to bring it to him.

"We had breakfast before the Con started and I pitched him the basic concept of Booster—where he came from, what motivated him and what would make him different. At that point, I didn't even have the pitch written out. I believe I had a preliminary sketch.

Booster Gold being born in Dallas makes perfect sense. There are few times/places more associated with American capitalism than Dallas, Texas in the mid-80s. (Booster Gold versus J.R. Ewing!)

Speaking of villains, Jurgens also admits to a lingering affinity for Dirk Davis. Maybe one day Booster's selfish agent will get a shot at redemption. Until then, you can relive his glory days in Booster Gold: The Big Fall when it is released this September.

More Fung at C2E2

Herbert Fung has been going to the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo for years, and more often than not, he seems to bring back a Booster Gold commission from a superstar artist. It was Adam Hughes in 2013, David Finch in 2014, and Ty Templeton in 2016.

This year, Herb has outdone himself with this amazing Booster Gold commission from Tom Grummett:

Oh, boy, that looks good! I'm gold with envy, Herb!

Grummett's credits are diverse, but I'll always think of him as THE artist for Superboy. After seeing this, I'm inclined to put him near the top of my list of Booster Gold artists as well.

Very Old Release: Captain Atom 10

Booster booster José got in touch to tell Boosterrific of a hole in our collection of Booster Gold comics. Somehow, we missed Booster Gold's appearance in 1987's Captain Atom #10. That's a 30-year-old oversight!

© DC Comics

In our defense, Booster doesn't actually appear in the issue. What you see above is a static image of Booster (and his teammates) being reviewed on a video monitor inside the Pentagon as they discuss Captain Atom's recent addition to the United Nations-sanctioned Justice League International.

Elsewhere in the issue, news reports (and a helpful editorial box) peg the events of this issue as taking place simultaneously with those seen in Justice League International #8. So while the United States military was worrying about Booster's anti-American activities, we know our hero was busy in Paris hitting on (and being shot down by) Catherine Cobert, the administrative head of the local JLI Embassy. It's a small DC Universe!

Thanks for the spot, José. Follow his lead, Boosterphiles; if you see Booster somewhere and you don't think Boosterrific knows it, you can always drop a tip via the site's Contact form.

Inktober 2017

"Inktober" is a month-long challenge to artists to draw one ink drawing a day for the entire month of October. The event has been around for 8 years now, and this year I've spotted a few Booster Golds.
