What We Learned at Wondercon 2024

Over the weekend, The Blot wrote me to say

McFarlane Toys announced at WonderCon there’s a new Booster Gold 7” DC Multiverse action figure coming next year!!!

Cool, I thought. But then I looked at the email's attachment and saw this:

McFarlane Toys Wondercon 2024 presentation, photo via Toyark.com
Disclaimer: this isn't The Blot's photo but the image I found at Toyark.com when I googled to confirm this wasn't an early April Fools.

A New 52 Booster Gold? An overly-complicated design that looked bad in 2D comics and looks even worse on a small 3D action figure? Who wants that? I certainly don't, and if you tell me that you do I'm going to give you a classic Gary Coleman side-eye gif.

McFarlane gave us the Blue and Gold set with Booster's modern Mark I.v2 costume back in 2022, and a Waverider Booster in 2023. While I'd love more Booster Gold figures, why can't we get the classic Mark I high-collar costume? Or, if you want to get obscure, how about a figure with the Conglomerate leather jacket? (Please!)

The Blot followed up with this message:

A quick update. Turns out the dates in the picture are wrong. The new Booster Gold figure is coming out in 2024!

That would be great news... if I wanted a New 52 Booster Gold figure. I don't. But if your name is Jim Lee and you're eager to get your hands on a New 52 Booster Gold action figure, 2024 is your year!

Thanks for the news, Blot.

Fashionably Late Super Powers

McFarlane Toys has announced the latest additions to their line of updated Super Power Collection action figures, including Manga Batman, Brainiac, Green Lantern Kilowog, and, most importantly Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) and Blue Beetle's Aerial Mobile Headquarters, better known as The Bug!

Those are all great, but McFarlane has buried the lede. If you look closely at the Bug's packaging, you just might notice another figure that has not been released or even announced.

There's no way McFarlane made a Booster Gold figure just to take pictures for the Bug's packaging, right? It seems a safe assumption that we'll be getting a McFarlane Toys Booster Gold Super Powers Collection figure sooner or later.

Blue Beetle and his Bug are available for pre-order via links at McFarlane.com. You might want to go ahead and buy both so you'll be ready with your own "Blue And" whenever Gold finally arrives.

Thanks to eagle-eyed Jake for bringing this to our attention.

Watch the Hair

McFarlane Toys announced a new selection of 7" DC Multiverse figures this week, and their selection includes a familiar face, albeit one in an unfamiliar costume.

McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Waverider (DC Classic) Gold Label action figure

That's Waverider, but probably not the one most DC Comics readers remember. By which I mean that is not Matthew Ryder, the protagonist of the 1991 Armageddon 2001 event.

As devout Booster boosters can tell from the costume, that's actually Michael Jon "Booster Gold" Carter. Or one of them, anyway.

Here, I'll let the mcfarlane.com promotional text explain:

During the Convergence event, an aged Booster Gold (Michael Jon Carter) from an alternate Earth became the new Waverider when he was fed into the timestream by Earth-0's Booster Gold. This Waverider took on a career in the Multiverse, initially helping Telos and various Super Heroes convince Brainiac to realign the Multiverse. Waverider's ability to surf the timestream enables him to discover secrets hidden in the past and also gain knowledge of future events.

This is kind of a deep cut, even for McFarlane Toys. Booster-rider has only ever appeared in 2 comics: Convergence Booster Gold #2 and Convergence #8 both released on the same day in 2015. And the costume on that figure appears in only the first of those two comics!

I'm no fan of the ridiculously overworked "New 52" era design of Waverider II with its unnecessary armored leggings gold-plated abs, traffic-sign shoulder arrows, and call-back to NuBooster's hideously medieval gauntlets, but it looks positively svelte compared to the bulky McFarlane figure, which I can only assume is re-purposing re-colored pieces from previous steroid-abusing figures into an approximation of the comic book Waverider II costume. The economics of toy production is a bitch!

But if you (rightly) believe that any Booster Gold figure is a good figure, you can already pre-order your own for $19.99 at Target.com.

Uh Oh Spaghettios

It appears there was some data loss on the host server, and I've lost everything since Tuesday morning. Which, thankfully isn't much, as I haven't even gotten around to adding Action Comics #1057 to the database yet. So maybe it's a good thing that it's been a slow month for Booster Gold.

[For future reference, the lost post was a link to a custom Super Powers Collection-styled Booster Gold and Goldstar action figure by SuperPoweredCustoms at www.etsy.com.]

Goldstar by SuperPoweredCustoms

Here in the wee hours of Friday morning, I'm still finding a few glitches in the web hosting services. I'm not sure what all this means exactly (hardware failure? user error? malicious action?), but rather than risk losing another post, I'm just going to backup the database again and call it a week. See you Monday, I hope!

Try Me

Writes jadeknight2008:

I'm not sure if y'all caught this or not but Booster has a cameo as an action figure in the Teen Titans Go! Season 8 episode "Teen Titans Action". It's from March. Thank you for the amazing website!

First things first, thanks! I try. (And I love the "y'all.")

Second, no, I had no idea until you told me. Thanks for that, too! Here's the screen grab:

Thanks for keeping us informed. Keep you eyes out, Booster boosters; y'all never know where you'll find Gold.
