This thread is for discussion of the SMALLVILLE episode "Booster" (3X6017), scheduled for initial broadcast on the CW network on April 22, 2011.

This thread has been created to divorce discussion of the episode (including potential spoilers for first-time viewers) from the thread detailing pre-broadcast hope and hype. The previous SMALLVILLE discussion thread, "Smallville Booster?" can be found at the following link:

Spoiler tagging since I'm not sure if a discussion thread's open or not.
Ahhh, Ted, what did they do to you?

Seriously though, I actually really liked it. They didn't go too far, and I HATE to admit it, but by the end I actually found that wink endearing. Ugh I hate myself a little now.

Liked the kid playing Jaime quite a lot. Found that the differences from the source material didn't bother me too much. And that guy actually did a pretty good job as Booster. Hah, Skeets as a Bluetooth might have been my favorite part. And the punchline being that Booster acted without thinking was a pretty nice description for anyone who decides to look up Booster in comics later. :)

I am going to break this down, character wise first:

Booster

Love the portrayal. Very faithful to both Vol. One Booster (the showboat and the man seeking the fame) and Vol Two (the man hiding behind a smile, who regrets his mistakes). The suit was very good...better than most of the costumes on the show. We got the force field, the blasters, and flight...wish we could have gotten superstrength too, but oh well.

I would be interested to see what someone not familar with Booster thought of the episode...they did well to play up him maybe being the villain, then as a misguided fool, and finally the hero.

Also wild to see that both Clark and Booster helping each other embrace their destinies. Booster helped Clark see he has to step out of the shadows...and Clark helped Booster towards his destiny to be the hero the world will never know.

Jaime

The actor who played him grew on me. At first I thought he was too bulky and heavy, but in the episode he is works perfectly. Liked the suit as a first time weapon. Favorite moment was when he hugged Booster...without realizing it, Jaime gave Booster what he really needed.

Ted

VERY DIFFERENT from what we are use too....but I LOVED HIM! A cool, collected businessman...the Blackwater of the Midwest. Maybe its because I am a writer, but I would love to see them, when they bring Ted back, have him and his company become exactly like that: the people that obtain and study dangerous items for the benifit of mankind.

Skeets

I had a feeling he would be the Bluetooth...a bit sad about that, as I wanted to see our flying droid. While alot of people love Billy West, I actually prefered this voice...the cultured butler voice is what I hear when I read Skeets

Did you notice?

-Dan Garrett was the first Beetle of this world...too bad he wasn't a hero.

-Michelle was mentioned!

-They are moving the scarab...one can only assume it will end up in El Paso.

Missed Opportunities for Winks at the Audience

-With all the Booster shirts (wonder if there will be a rush to buy more or if the CW will advertise selling them), we couldn't get one Booster Action Figure?

-Wish we would have gotten a Booster/Ted scene...infact, I have the perfect idea for one. We would have seen Booster walking with Ted...

Booster: Listen Ted, can I call you Ted? Ted, if I am going to be giving up all of this to help out Jaime, I am going to need something from you.

Ted: I already got you the key to the city

Booster: I am thinking something cooler...like a Boostermobile! (shakes head) No...no...I got a better idea. You are working on robotics, right?

Ted: (unease) Yeah...

Booster: Well, I got an idea involving you, me, and my pal Skeets...

Final comment...I would so watch as "Blue and Gold" tv series that dealt with Booster and Jaime working together to become heroes with Ted sucked along (and the two working to make him reveal his more funny side.)

I wouldn't worry too much about spoilers in here. Tag it if you think you might be giving away story elements. Don't worry tagging if you're just giving a reaction.

I thought the episode was a little melodramatic for my tastes, but that's probably why I stopped watching Smallville all those years ago. I was completely satisfied with SBooster Gold. (Well, I didn't like the flying animation. But otherwise.) I think Eric Marstolf did a great job bringing Booster to life. His relationship with Clark was great, very BOOSTER GOLD v1.

I was considerably less happy with the episode's treatment of SBeetle. I felt that all they let Jaime do was scream in a can. That's not very heroic. Ted Kord knows that he's unleashed a murder weapon on the world, and all he does is trade favors with some guy with a 1-800 number? That's not very heroic. And Dan Garrett gets a shout out as the guy who murdered people under the influence of the scarab? That's not very heroic. Oh well. The episode wasn't named "Beetle."

The fact that Skeets made the episode at all was awesome. And I can't believe that Michelle got a mention (if not a name drop).

I have to admit, however, that my favorite part of the episode wasn't a SBooster moment at all. It was when Clark dropped Cat Grant's box on the floor. That was the only lol moment of the episode for me, and was ridiculously satisfying.

It was totally worth watching.

first off, I want to apologize for not being more active on the forums as of late, I've been distracted by a combination of real life and Minecraft, as well as I want to avoid spoilers as much as possible since I am getting my comics every other week to save on gas. now on to the topic at hand, I LOVED this episode, I thought Booster was perfect, I really wouldn't change a thing about him, as for Ted, the more I think about it, the more I kind of like what they did, if you think about it, the times we saw Ted, he was trying to recover the scarab and keep it secret from the press (not uncommon for a company with defense contracts to be secretive) he makes a deal with Booster to recover the scarab as quietly as possible in exchange for the key to the city (a fair exchange for someone with influence, and hardly unusual to contract a mercenary (for the purposes of my example hiring a hero makes them a mercenary at least for the duration of the contract) for a particularly difficult task) hell, the only bad things we hear about him is from Lois, who is hardly an objective observer, from previous episodes I have seen, she spoke of the Justice Society in the same way portraying them as a gang of criminals, and for all we know, Ted lost his mentor when Dan Garret was killed beforehand (assuming he had a similar relationship as in the comics) and has probably taken the loss of the scarab pretty hard because of it. The way I saw it, Ted in the show was just a business man who ran a defense contractor dealing in alien tech and was just trying to keep things under control, I hardly think he was portrayed as a villain. as for Dan, we clearly saw that the scarab was controlling Jaime like a puppet, and it took every ounce of willpower Jaime had to get the armor to turn off and stop the rampage, Dan presumably didn't have anyone trying to talk him down, or if he did, it was too little too late. Jaime wasn't what I was expecting, but I did like what they did, I still think the armor was a little too clunky. at the end when Booster and Clark were talking and Booster suggested a name change to fit the "s" that Clark wears, I was hoping that he would fully name him Superman (a la Doomsday), but alas it was just "Super" I would kill for a Justice League show following Smallville, you could have Booster, Beetle, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, Black Canary, Stargirl, Aquaman, Hawkman, and Cyborg, since I believe they have all made appearances at one point or another, hell, the last I saw the helm of Nabu didn't have a host anymore, maybe throw in Dr. Fate as well. I figure they should have the fx for all of them on file, so it probably wouldn't be too hard to do, but they probably won't, if only because DC seems allergic to making its properties high profile, or rather everything that doesn't have "Super" or "Bat" in the title, notable exception being Green Lantern, but it remains to be seen if it is any good, though I do have my hopes up.

Aw, 'pete, I was beginning to suspect that you'd had your fill of Booster Gold! (Actually, I saw your tweets about Minecraft, and having heard of it's super-addictive properties, I had my suspicions of what was keeping you away.)

yes I have sunk many hours into Minecraft, I just discovered the absolute height that anything can be built (apparently 85 blocks above sea level and you hit space, which sucks because I had elaborate plans for a 400 block tall tower that would have had a minecart track like a roller coaster all the way down, but alas, if I want it to get finished I'll have to dig down over 300 blocks to get the right height) oh well, I'm sure I'll think of something. back to the episode though, I'm pretty sure I saw an ad patch on Booster's chest advertising for Snake oil, though I could have misread it.

First:

The ratings are in and it looks like Smallville had a ten percent drop compared to the previous week, though this seems to be less Booster faults and more based on the holiday and weather (other shows had comparable results). While not bad, I am pretty sure we all hoped for Booster to cause a rise in viewership.

Second:

Regarding the show itself..I guess it was as good as one could expect from Smallville (that is actually meant as a compliment). I do have some complains regarding how Ted & Jaime were portrayed (Booster was done rather well...though in a vol #1 fashion), but considering how surprising it is to see these characters as a live-action version in the first place.

Just rewatched the episode. The Gold Guardian of Metropolis is wearing the following sponsor patches.

CHEST:
Metropolis Telecom
Shake Up Kola

LEFT SLEEVE:
Bank of Metropolis
GlobalAir
Federated Couriers

RIGHT SLEEVE:
Shake Up Kola (same as chest)
GlobalAir (same as left sleeve)
Accelerate Energy Bar

BACK:
Federated Couriers (same as left sleeve)
Metropolis Telecom (same as chest)
Bank of Metropolis (same as left sleeve)

And throughout the episode, Jaime wears a t-shirt and backpack promoting the "El Paso Insect Club." Cute.

I for one thought the episode was great! Eric Martsolf did a fantastic (or should I say Boosterrific?) job playing Booster. I loved the conversations he had with Clark, from the confrontational one to the emotional one at the end. I also liked Tom Welling's "bumbling" Clark. I've been waiting to see how he'd handle that for a long time. At first I didn't like the guy playing Jaime, but that changed as the episode went on.

Ted Kord wasn't really what we know from the comics, but at least they didn't kill him!

Overall, excellent. I watched it twice.
