I'm also on a quest to watch 200 movies I've never seen before in 2012. As of this writing, I'm up to 34.

If I might recommend "Harry and Tonto", "Portrait of Jennie" or "The Uninvited (1944), if you haven't already seen them (all good movies).
Out on a limb recommendation here "Tucker & Dale vs Evil", I'm not a teen slasher film fan, but this movie had me rolling on the floor.

I'm up to 110 right now. I'm being generally passive about my approach to what movies I'm watching: I'm letting most of them come to me via television or DVDs that I can borrow for free from friends.

TUCKER AND DALE is on my list to see because Alan Tudyk is in it. On your recommendation, I'll keep an eye out for all of these. Thank you.

Portrait of Jennie and The Uninvited are on TCM all the time, I'll let you know if I see them scheduled (gotta love the DVR). Harry and Tonto was on in Feb so that probably won't be back for a while. Tudyk is hilarious in T&DvsE, unfortunately the movie only got a limited run in theaters. Thanks for the Horatio Hornblower recommendation, it was on today and I had never seen it.

I can't believe it, "Harry and Tonto" is showing tomorrow (Sunday) at 8pm on TCM.

Grimmy, mere moments before turning on my computer to post this, I saw HARRY AND TONTO was coming on TCM (the single best channel on television!) and set the DVR to record! I'll soon know if I should thank or blame you for the recommendation.

If you guys are interested in the whole list of what I've been watching, I'm publicly tracking them on my personal blog at wriphe.com (where I almost NEVER mention Booster Gold). I'm currently tagging the movie posts "150 in 2012" and you can see them all so far in the blog archives at this link: http://wriphe.com/blog/archive.php?search=150%20in%202012.

Yeah I thought about that AFTER I stuck my neck out  . But, I've been following you're movie list and we generally agree on what constitutes a film worth watching. Oddly, I once would have recommended "My Dinner with Andre" based on my original memory, but upon recent viewing I've decided that it's worse than watching grass grow. So I'm not worried about H&T, unless you're looking for a movie that can be shown at parties, that's what "Tucker & Dale" is for. :)

I'd heard so many exemplary compliments about ANDRE over the years, and I think that was the real problem with it. If I'd seen it when my personal mores and philosophies were less well defined (say, middle school), I might have found it more fulfilling.

Which brings up another point: a co-worker and I were discussing how time changes what movies mean to you personally. What once was great can years later seem foolish or boring as your experiences color your interpretation. My mother always uses COOL HAND LUKE as her example. She thought it was fantastic when it was new, but can't suffer through it anymore. My co-worker's example of a film once admired, now despised, was MASH (the movie).

Grimmy, I once had a professor named Bill Marriott. I took several drawing classes from Bill in college, but I can't think of a single thing that Bill taught me about making drawings. What Bill did teach me was the value of artistic vision in movies. Bill had very esoteric tastes, and he frequently showed his classes movies as diverse as Warhol's TRASH to Guest's BEST IN SHOW, among many, many others. I feel confident that Bill would have felt comfortable showing us HARRY AND TONTO.

In other words, I don't yet know if I liked HARRY AND TONTO, but I'm glad I watched it.

Thanks, I know it was a bit esoteric for a first recommendation, don't worry the others are more traditional. Art Carney won the Academy Award for best actor for this film and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately the cinematography suffers from the worst of that 1970's look, and can be very distracting.

Oddly, I just realized that my stepfather went through something similar to Harry. After my mother passed away he bought an old Cadillac and started traveling around the country with Shadow, his little black poodle. Visiting his friends and relatives from Florida to California, never wanting to stay long in one place. His situation wasn't exactly the same, but his attitude about life and being on his own was very similar to Harry.

Speaking of 70s fashion, at some point during the film it struck me that Harry reminded me visually of Mentor on the 1970s SHAZAM television show. And frankly, it didn't remind me of the actor who played Mentor (Les Tremayne), but the way Uncle Marvel was drawn in the role of Mentor in the DC comics at the time.

With me, yes, it always comes back to comics.
